Butternut Squash, Smoked Mozzarella, Arugula and added Bacon

This review is for the pizza only. We went to a Pizza Pop Up at Black Sheep (The farm is partnering with local restaurants on Sunday's this winter and having Polar Pizza Pop Ups during off hours). The pizza was fantastic- fresh ingredients and a charred crust that was light and on the Neapolitan side. The highlight was meeting the people behind the pizza. What a great local story of reuse of vacant land and creatively transforming it into an Urban Farm. Their hours during the growing seasons are limited to Tuesday's only, so check their website or like them on Facebook to see where they will be next.

Four cheese and Bianca pizza

I noticed a sign advertising the Westside Tilth Farm and pizza at the corner of Richmond and Vermont on Saturday morning, and headed down Vermont to check it out. The farm looked lovely, as did the produce for sale, but let's be honest, the pizza was the main draw for me. The four types of pizza offered on the day I visited were a Margherita, four cheese, Bianca, and a vegan one. I was with my husband and a friend, so we decided to get one of each, except for the vegan one since that one had cashew cheese and my husband's allergic, and split them. You could opt for additional toppings like Italian sausage or carrot greens for a few dollars more, but we decided to get the pies as they were. There were two picnic tables with umbrellas, as well as several benches, so we snagged a spot. Since it's an urban farm, there isn't too much room, but no real issues with my son's stroller. My ideal pizza crust is fairly thin but still chewy, and the farm's pizza hits the mark. I would have liked it if there were more variety in pizzas, though, as our three pizzas were pretty similar to each other. For a farm, I would have expected to see more of their veggies on the pizzas. We could have added on some for a few extra dollars, but the pizzas were already around $14 each. Three pizzas for three adults worked out well for us, though three less hungry people might be content with just two pies. While I wouldn't come for pizza every Saturday, this is a good Saturday morning kind of activity when the weather's great and you want to show out-of-town guests a different side of Buffalo.

Went to the West Tilth Farm pizza pop up at Essex Pub tonight. All of the pizzas sounded great. Ended up trying the Firecracker, the Tomato Pesto, and the Fennel Sausage pizzas. The crust is light and chewey, with a slight char. Very enjoyable. All the ingredients are fresh and the flavor showcases that fact. My favorite was the Fennel Sausage pizza West Tilth Farm does pop ups around Buffalo and if you find the opportunity to go, I highly recommend you give them a try. They focus on sourcing organic produce... They actually ship in soil that is then placed on top of a geotextile barrier. This is to keep the soil as free from contaminants as possible. Everything was very good.

Maybe this isn't the right season, but I was highly disappointed with what was being offered. There…read morewasn't that many stands out, it was probably 15 venders at most. Back at one time, you had so many choices it was shoulder to shoulder traffic. The prices no longer show any value to cause you to come here. Honestly you can shop at Price rite and Walmart, and see that their vegetables and fruit are cheaper.

I go here for all my annuals, and all my herbs that I grow. I used to buy veggie plants, too, but now I just focus on flowers and herbs. Their selection is wonderful, and they are always fully-stocked. They have tons of plants, and several different vendors. Good news is, the prices are basically the same so there's no need to shop around- but some vendors focus more on one thing than others. There's the herb and vegetable plant seller, and the one that focuses more on flowers. Then the one in the back sells everything- but they each have their own unique items. I try to purchase form everyone to spread the wealth. There is a vendor who has a "farmers market" but it's not a real farmers market. They are selling food that you get at supermarkets- produce form California, Mexico, et. They are NOT selling local farm stand items, so if you want a farmers market experience where you support your local farmers- DO NOT buy form this one. This is my really big negative gripe about this place. The parking lot is also atrocious!! there are more potholes, crumbling asphalt, and dips than there is smooth pavement! I have to drive 5mps through the whole place! They could use a new parking lot - it's really bad. There's also a flea market of sorts in the far back that is there sometimes, not other items- I went to look once, but it seemed like a lot of junk, and nothing I was interested in. I will say this place is an odd mix of things, but the flower vendors for my garden are irreplaceable, an I will always com here to stock my garden every year!

It's been several years since I did Promised Land and I will tell you why. I do Porter Farms and…read moreNative Offerings every year, so I think I have good experience for comparing. Promised Land is by far the most expensive CSA in the area. It was the most expensive when I first did it and when I thought about joining again two years later, they had DOUBLED their prices. Compare this to Porter Farms which has raised their price less than 10% total in the last 6 years. PL sells out, so it is pure supply and demand, but I would never pay that much. In my view, a CSA should be less expensive than the farmers market. You prepay, you take the risk that this year could be a bad crop, and you don't get to choose what you want. Pro: They have fruit. Their blueberries are the best I have ever had in my life. Con: They have fruit, It doesn't keep well. Sometime I would pick it up, right on time, take it straight home, and the berries already had mold. Pro: You get some fancy and unique items you won't find in other shares. Con: You get less volume than any other share. Pro: They have potatoes and all different colors of them. It was so fun getting these. You got lots of other fun things you might not buy at the farmers market, (mostly because they are so expensive). Con: It's not actually cheaper than going to the Farmers Market, so you could just pick out what you want and as much as you want each week instead. Pro: It comes pre-boxed. You don't have to remember to bring your own bags or worry about the bag it's in tearing. Con: You are expected the bring the box back next week. Pro: There are multiple pick up sites. Con: The different sites don't seem to be even. I did it the same year as a friend who had a Tuesday pickup in Amherst and I had a Thursday pickup in Buffalo. She often had things I never got but the reverse was never true. All in all, Promised Land is a fun fancy share for high income folks who don't want to bothered going to the farmers market or hate the idea of getting "too much" produce.

I am sad that this week marks the last week of my farm share but my, was it memorable. I was also very fortunate to have been able to go out to Oles Family Farm and visit the family that worked so hard to fed me and other families all season long. What an incredible, lovely family. I feel honored to have eaten their goods and support their operation. This is how everyone should eat. You can taste the difference. I can't wait to do the farm share next year. Until then , bring on the root veggies!

It is pretty much always crowded, so be prepared to stand in lines at most of the vendor booths. The lines actually feel like a plus to me, since it is well organized and clear to know who is next. Some markets feel more like a free-for-all of whoever is loudest and this way is far more comfortable for a person with social anxiety. Of course it's crowded because everything here is high quality and sold at peak freshness. There are fruits, veggies, prepared foods, canned foods, flowers, and in the late spring / early summer you'll find seedlings for home gardens. Prices aren't low but it is important to support our local food infrastructure and the flavors are outstanding. I have talked with a lot of the farmers and vendors and every one has been friendly and helpful. Most vendors I shop with here accept credit cards. I would love to see more variety, as most of the farm stands tend to have similar things - farmers, please grow more tomatillos, radicchio, hakurei turnips, artichokes, and other less-common veggies! Logistics: Streets are tight, parking is all parallel-parking on the street, and there are not enough sidewalks. The entire market is on grass. I don't think there are any restrooms. Bring a wagon if you intend to buy anything large or heavy.

It was so much fun to wander past the stalls of local food/produce/products and see all of the people out enjoying the gorgeous morning. We ate breakfast here from one of the vendors. The vendors were varied and all local - it was really a wonderful way to start our trip to Buffalo.
