Gah, I don't know...4 for service and site, 3 for food?
I have some serious pros to state here, and then some serious head-scratchers (that I can mainly forgive, and yet...). Dramatic foreshadowing? Didn't mean ta play ya, Yelp readers! Read on!
So, The Manor at Weston on the Green is beautiful. There. Said it. A quick commute up from London (it's Oxford-ways), it makes for a nice night away or even a nice drive-and-tea daytrip.
I'm willing to cut them some slack on the food, although the end result for us was disappointing because it was, well...not cheap (even though we ate at the bar and not in the dining room). Why slack? It was apparently the first week of a new menu and a new (Michelin-starred, reportedly) chef. We split the chicken fillet, the Manor burger, and triple cooked chips, before balking at the thought of an Eton Mess with banana (banana?).
Of everything, the best was the burger patty itself: flavourful, well-cooked, juicy, generously-sized, perfect. The Manor burger was supposed to be topped with relish, bacon, cheese and fried egg. They forgot to put on the egg, but I'm thankful: it was too much and I ended up leaving the burger "buns" (foamy bricks of bread impossible to wrap one's mouth around) and just eating the patty with cheese and side salad.
The chicken fillet was well-cooked but it...was a chicken breast on the same "buns". For roughly 15 pounds. Plus 12.5% included service fee. And a 45 minute wait.
Otherwise, though, the grounds are lovely: topiaries, and croquet space, and little two-seaters placed around the lawns for tete-a-tetes. There's a back patio, and a terrace, and magazines for aspirational thoughts (Aston Martin magazine, I'm looking at you!).
The service was also lovely: smiley and friendly and unstuffy but on-point. Much appreciated, much applauded.
Yelp note: tea here sounds lovely, and the public reviews seem to agree. I'd happily give it a go on a quieter weekday. read more
