After a long day of visiting the Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, the parliament building and Downing St. we walked past this busy pub and decided it was time for a break. So glad we did! The pub downstairs was full but we were also hungry so we went upstairs to a very quaint dining area. Ordered a few pints and meals, food was great, service was quick and friendly. I was walking by when I saw the sign " Britain's oldest brewery," so had to stop. I asked for fish and chips and a beer recommendation. Unfortunately, the kitchen had already closed so no fish and chips. As for beer, the bartender suggested, dragon fire, which I had never heard of or tried. While sitting there I met some people and had a lovely conversation before being on my way. I'd recommend stopping here for the friendly service, the atmosphere and old world charm. read more

After visiting Westminster Abby and on our way to the Churchill War Room, we stopped into this classic pub. We went downstairs to the wine bar for lunch. I had the fish and chis that were wonderful. It looked like a whole fish and was lighted breaded and greasy. My wife enjoyed the beef, ale and onion pie that she totally enjoyed. Popped in here after visiting the Churchill War Rooms. It was about about 11:30 on a Monday. They don't start a serving lunch till noon, so we had a pint at the bar. Bartender was friendly and the beer was cold. At noon we stepped downstairs to a cozy seating / wine bar area. Paid at the counter and again thee staff was very friendly. Wife and I both had the Beef, Ale and onion pie with mashed potatoes and veg. It was so good! Everything was cooked to perfection and everything complemented each other very well. Beef was tender and pastry was nice and flakey. I would recommend this place to all. read more

Came here for a quick pint between seeing the sights so I can't speak for the food. Perfectly located right next to Westminster Abbey, we got there just in time for mass to wrap up so people were heading downstairs to the dining area for Sunday roast. We hung out by the bar area on the first floor, it is a lovely hardwood flooring and mahogany bar located on a beautiful street in London. Bartender was very nice, draft beer was great and the prices were standard. All in all a good spot to pop your head into. read more

We happened upon Westminster Arms during our day touring London town. It's off the beaten path a little so it is not at all touristy. The dining room is upstairs, and is nice and cozy. It's good for small groups but can accommodate larger ones by putting some tables together. The menu was a bit limited (maybe 10-12 items) plus a couple of daily specials. I opted for the fish and chips and my partner had the beef steak ale pie we split our dishes and shared. Overall the fish and chips were okay. The pie was very good though. For dessert we shared a bread pudding. That was not to our expectations (it was a little too hard, perhaps a day old). Service was nice and friendly. Good place for a quick lunch. I would not necessarily call this a destination pub, but is a good one if you are in the area. read more

Totally inedible. Mediocre service, food prepared way in advance. Burger bun was burned by time under warming lamps, the fries, to compensate, were cold. Steak and ale pie was eating bread, fried chicken, so called, tasted weird. Stay away, there are many better options. read more

Just fine. Good pit stop before hitting up the War Rooms. You go into the basement wine bar to order food. Sit at a table and order and pay at the bar. The bartender was friendly, contrary to other folks' experiences. We tried the steak and ale pie. (£11.95). I got an enormous piece of gristle, but the gravy and sides were quite good. We also tried the apple pie for dessert (£4.95). The crust was gummy but the apples were tart, which was nice. read more

Like many others, we went here for lunch (with our three teenaged sons) between our tours at Westminster Abbey and Churchill's War Rooms. It was a wonderful experience! We had fish and chips, beef, ale and onion pie, curry, and bangers and mash. We cleaned all our plates and then saw they had dessert! The five of us shared a sticky toffee pudding and a brownie with ice cream. It was just a few bites for each of us but we were so full from the meals that we didn't have room for more. Often too busy to bear through the week. During the weekends its a quiet, friendly place to have a pint. It still feels properly old. Though there are a couple of TVs set high in the corners (when I was in on Sunday there was footy on in one corner, and David Attenborough in the other). Coolest of all: they have a remote extension of the division bell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Division_bell) that indicates members of Parliament or the House of Lords need to return to fight a close vote! This is a charming little pub tucked away from the hustle and bustle of busy Westminster. The appearance is very old school and the owner is charming. The beer was well kept and it was a great place to while away a couple of hours, sitting on a stool in the window watching the world go by. If anything, the place is a little too tucked away. We were told by a salesman at Harrod's that this was a good place to go to see the members of Parliament get snockered, but since Parliament wasn't in session, we missed that treat (wouldn't have known who they were anyway...). We went into the "basement" area and ordered food. They had lots of signs touting certain menu offerings ... but they weren't able to produce them (they were out or whatever). We did get hamburgers, which were ok, and then they shut down the kitchen (it was about 7 p.m.). I see from other reviews that there was a restaurant upstairs, but no one bothered to tell us. read more

I went there thirsty, hungry, and tired from an 18 hour transatlantic flight. While "Westminster Abbey" was near but closed for some reason I heard it would open later on for Mass after 3pm, so I decided to eat something in the meantime before visiting the beautiful place once again on my 3rd trip to England. I entered a grand place, with dark wooden and classic looking pub. For food at the time I went, you had to go to the basement or in my case in the "Dungeon" where I was greeted by a lady with white hair blue eyes at the counter. She looks like Baby Spice had been dragged through the wash and dry cleaners with tons of eye make up. Or for fellow Americans, "Chucky's Wife" from Childs Play. She felt the dire supreme urge to have rage in her heart and humiliate further berating me infront of other customers. This all happened within seconds of ordering my very first "fish and chips", she told me the price however, after she saw where I was sitting and that there were others at the booth with me, she upped the price by 5 pounds! She went on to tell me she was going to charge me further while I ordered one dish and had 2 other guests. She said because the guests are with you (assumming I was going to share my meal maybe.) she was going to charge. I further explained that they were not going to eat. They could have very well been outside but were just there with me physically and that I'd buy the water for them to drink because they were thirsty. Just after attempting to explain they were only there physically but was not at all hungry because they had already eaten on the plane, and I was the only hungry one. They don't even like fish and chips! I wanted to see how it was going to be made so I stood there admiring. She verbally attacked me with "you got an attitude!?!" and continued to point me out to her friend saying, "look at this one here, she's got a problem" while being loud, hissy and insisting the other younger looking one went on and attacked me too without prior knowledge of the conversation. They didn't have to look like a hag and a witch but their attitude soon transformed them into the various characters. To top it off, I had went there on a day which was my birthday with my dearest parents who have worked so long and hard and have never experienced Europe or London to be specifica. It was already a long transatlantic flight, so I already had no energy to even start an attitude but wanted to show my dear parents whom I love and care about (I brought them on a tour of Europe to show the great people, landmarks, and sights) and was greeted by witches in the dungeon at Westminster Arm. GOD IS GREAT ! ! ! The great thing about this experience is that it was interesting and a culture shock because with this being my 3rd time there I had never had a bad experience with a British woman. Good thing I stayed calm, like God was testing me. Westminster Abbey opened up for mass, my parents were able to admire the Beautiful Grand Architecture of the ABBEY. I met my longtime British friend by chance (because he remembered we were scheduled to go there) infront of Her Majesty's Theater in time for my parents to enjoy the beautiful TOP PHANTOM OF THE OPERA PERFORMANCE. Then to top it off, at night we danced with Ciara in the VIP section at Bungalow (a great club) on my BIRTHDAY. FROM dealing with HAGs (at Westminster Arm) in the basement, to Partying with Celebrity and RICHES and had the time of my life! THANK YOU! Leave if you do not want to be tested by the Witches Dungeon! Even though they were made by hags, the gentlemen were nice, and the people upstairs seemed to get it on nicely, watch for those two if they're still there in the basement. A solid pub with a good deal of local flavor. I've been here a few times, and always had a nice experience. I find the lighting choice a bit harsh - feels a bit like an office or a classroom rather than a pub, but the drink choices are good and my beer connoisseur pals maintain they keep their ales better than most in the area. Saw a number of local business men and a number of tourists drinking beers and wine and lunching at the small round tables and the tiny booths. I saw soups, fish and chips, and some sandwiches that all looked quite tasty. A tight fit for sure but also quite comfy. We had a great Cab Sav. Yes, the staff are the most realiably sulky I've ever encountered, but I like to see that as a challenge. And you would be miserable too if you had to deal with swarms of drunken civil servants all the time. Has a lovely outdoor pavement/road area, and charming cosy downstairs. Overpriced, standard pub food, always runs out of crisps. Easily the second best pub in the area. read more
