A friend…read moreof mine loves this place because he used to come down here with his wife when she was still alive and it is near and dear to his heart. He convinced a bunch of us friends to check it out and well, it's nice. We ordered our seafood lunches at Merino's and I was excited about eating at the tables on the curb. He really wanted us to wait and eat at the beach. Okay! That sounds awesome. Five minutes later we're at the park and the picnic benches had no view of the beach. You literally were sitting at a bench next to the parking lot. At least it was right next to the restrooms. Then he wanted to walk around the shore. The path did technically see the shore, but the distance was like half a mile and these senior citizens were not going down to the sand. My sister and I were not going to miss being actually on the beach, so we ran down the the beach head and it was nice, but it was cold so we didn't go in the water. We later headed up to hang out with our senior friends and it didn't look good. They got to the first bench and one of our friends has a bad knee, another has leg cramps, another didn't feel steady, and another was doing great because she brought her walker with her and was getting in her steps. Our fearless leader was planning on walking another mile and a half to the lighthouse but my sister put the kibosh on that. We would've been fine, but looking at these poor ladies, they needed to walk back to the car before they couldn't. I felt bad for our leader because he wanted to show us the magic of this place, but naw, maybe next time because these ladies need help. I will give the beach area props because they are very accessible, but even with that, you have to know what your people can handle.

There was also almost no litter/garbage in the area - unlike other places we visited in Ocean Shores! On a Sunday morning it was very quiet. Another time, we might come here with a picnic to spend the day.

The waves weren't as big and dramatic as they could get but it was still very cool to see the ocean rolling so much. Normally we go when it's nice and tranquil but we finally took it in with a storm coming in to boot along with the tides which created a cool but really intense experience. The wind was very strong and it was raining so staying outside for a long time wasn't really an option. Still it was really a fun experience and this sandy beach is normally a great place to go to in the summer!

They'd recently mowed the paths and next to the boardwalk, however a little snake made his way up onto the boardwalk to sun. He stayed put so we could sneak past, but you could tell the growth under the platform was high and pushing up through the boards making it easy for him to come up from below. The rest of the path was uneventful. A lot of robins, but no migration activity or anything of significance to view at this time. We were passing through after visiting Olympic Park and looking for a hiking spot in the area. Lake…read moreSylvia seemed like a possibility so we stopped off last Sunday around 10am. There were a few hikers there, but otherwise mostly those preparing to fish. We didn't visit the camping section, but they've got a decent sized day-use area with a good amount of parking, tables, and restrooms. We took the forest loop trail that leads from the lake along the stream through the forest and back around to the day-use, about 2 1/2 miles. There are sections of the trail that are simply gorgeous, and other parts not quite as pretty. But the trail is pretty fun, ups and downs, winding with steps and bridges. While the path is completely passable right now, it was very muddy in many places. A bit precarious at times, as some of the soupiest, slickest spots happened to be on inclines and declines. You'll definitely need waterproof shoes and prepare to get dirty, but Sylvia is good for a quick hike. They've got some interesting educational info along the trail too...and the lake has a very peaceful feeling.

You can do the short Rain Forest Loop trail to get acclimated or do longer loops that connect. Along the way, you'll encounter bright green moss, lush ferns, giant trees, banana slugs, muhshooms, running creeks and more! Having visited the Hoh Rainforest on my last trip to Washington, I have to say that Quinault gives Hoh a run for its money. It's quieter and still as lush and majestic. The area on the south shore of Lake Quinault is part of the Olympic National Forest but on the North Shore of the lake you'll be on Olympic National Park trails. Both have day use fees (self pay) but do have ranger stations for information (check hours as they vary by season.) While it wasn't raining during my time there, everything was still so green and lush. I was able to visit Merriman Falls, the rain forest nature loop, Maple Glade trail and then did a longer hike on the North Shore from Graves Creek out to Pony Bridge (be aware that the lake loop road is washed out and you have to take a long detour to that trail via a very rutted and gravel road.) All in all, it was a wonderful and calming reset and so grateful to have spent time in this lovely area.

You will see watefalls, beautiful lakes and wildlife. The air was so refreshing and clean. We timed this trip, to make sure it wasnt over run with tourist. We walked to the ranger station, and walked around the musuem. This was a nice stop as well. I loved all the totem poles! @noirvedanaturals
