Captain Darrell was extremely accommodating. My Father-in-law, wife and two young boys had an amazing time. Captain "D" made sure we went out at a time that would maximize the experiance for the boys' first Salmon fishing trip. Good water, lots of laughs and lots of fish. We did have to release some but of course not on the Captain. So anyone upset about that would just be silly. We caught 3 keepers, 1 coho and 2 king salmon (one 15 pounder). My father in law has been fishing salmon his whole life and Captain D had just as much knowledge. He was amazing. read more

Captain Darrell caters to both serious fisherman and families with children who want a fun and safe day on the water. Captain Darrell came very highly recommended to me by the helpful owners of the French Creek Marina store. I was very impressed with Captain Darrell's professional and safe operation. Captain Darrell does an excellent job of monitoring the weather and water conditions. Listen to him, his main goal is to help you have the best experience possible. If he suggests that conditions are not ideal, take his advice and reschedule for later in the day or for another day. My 12-year-old son and I really enjoy bottom fishing for rockfish and lingcod. Captain Darrell did an excellent job of getting us into some real hot spots. Kids love fishing for rockfish because it gets them super involved with the equipment. Darrell is a very knowledgeable and patient teacher with children and inexperienced adults. I have now chartered with Captain Darrell several times. I find his prices are very reasonable and we've always had an awesome day on the water with him. Book early with him. He's very popular and his summer schedule fills up fast. PS - don't kid yourself, lingcod might not look like much, but those bad boys are delicious! When Captain Darrell gets through cleaning them you will never have seen such beautiful, white (with sometimes very light greenish hue), delicate flesh. I prefer over halibut. read more

Did a charter with Captain D for our dad's 65th birthday, had the best day ever! Captain D was an awesome guy and so incredibly knowledgeable about all things fishing. He knew exactly where to go for an action packed charter....we caught our first salmon within 30 seconds of having the line down! Was a very successful day on the water, brought 9 fish to the boat: 7 chinook, 1 coho, and a even a rock cod! Even had a "double header" at one point! Lots of bites beyond the fish brought onto the boat...left with our limit of salmon (threw the rest back, of course). It was a day full of excitement and laughs all around. Learned so much. COVID friendly as well, with distancing in mind. It was certainly a day I will NEVER forget. So incredibly special for my dad's birthday. Can't recommend Western Star Charters enough! read more

Caption Darryl was awesome. Not only did he provide all the gear he took us a mere 1 mile off shore to catch a total of 17 salmon!! It was a great afternoon fishing and all 5 in our party were able to reel in multiple fish to our delight. We caught mainly Coho but several of us were able to bring in a couple of Spring salmon as well. Darryl is a local fellow who exhibits just as much enthusiasm for fishing salmon today on the west coast as we did. He got very excited when my son reeled in almost a ten pounder towards the end of our trip. We finished off the charter by heading over to his crab traps where we got a couple of nice Dungeness crabs and two red crabs. He cleaned everything up beautifully for us and we went home happy, satisfied with the day and cooked ourselves a delicious seafood dinner. Highly recommend this charter! read more

We had a great time fishing on this charter. And we caught a bunch of big ugly lingcod and rock cod!! And one beautiful salmon! And took home two crab! YUM We are two older (60) gals and a grandson, age 8. Captain D and his girlfriend (awesome baiting/detangling/everything assistant) I asked if her son could join us because the boys would have fun together. Captain D took us several different areas where fish were biting and he worked hard with the currents to keep the boat over the fish. It paid off because we were constantly catching something. Sometimes it was too small to keep, but the fun was in the catching!! (Oh, Miss Diva, they untangle the line for you and cast it if you want.) They taught us how to fish and how to keep the fish on the line and they stepped in when the fish got too heavy for me. He cleaned all the fish and bagged it for us. This is what makes Captain D's charter special... 1. Before the charter, they caught a bunch of fresh live perch to use for our bait. 2. They laid crab cages ahead of time so we could take home fresh crab too. We caught about six crab, but only one was big enough. Capt D gave us one from his morning catch so we had enough for a meal. 3. They are like spending the day with family (a nice, good family) 4. Captain D is a really good fisherman and knows what he is doing. 5. We all agree this day fishing was the highlight of our week on VI. Horrible experience. It was myself and 4 boys. Told darryl before we reserved we only wanted bottom fish. He showed up at 2:30 to our 1:00pm appointment. I'm a chef and wanted bottom fish to prepare for meals for the week we would be staying in parksville, I work with salmon alot and wanted a change. I was also trying to justify spending over 500 dollars with him and thinking I would get some food for the week in return. He argued that it was too windy and that we should get the boys to fish for salmon for a couple of hours and then switch to bottom fishing for the last 2 hours, I wanted to keep the boys busy, and at this time it was already 3:30 . I agreed to go for salmon because he told us he would switch to bottom fishing and the boys all wanted to get going. After 2 hours of fishing and having to let all the salmon go because you can only keep farmed coho, we asked him to go bottom fishing since it had calmed down completely on the water and he just made excuses to not go. We caught fish, all of which we couldn't keep. At 7pm he was making phone calls to friends telling them he would be by soon. I guess if we caught some fish to keep it would've messed with his evening plans. The crab traps looked like someone had just checked them and one of them didn't even have bait in it. We ended up with nothing to keep and take home and it wasn't even what we wanted. Avoid this guy at all costs as there's way better fishing guides out of parksville. read more
