The Gwaii Hanaas National Park in Haida Gwaii is a paradise for sea kayaking. It's very remote and…read morequiet, has good beaches, fresh water and lots of wildlife. I've taken four trips with Gord in Haida Gwaii; two trips to Cape Freeman and two trips on the Outer Coast. On one Cape Freeman trip a pod of Orcas closely followed us for 30 minutes and on one Outer Coast trip a juvenile humpback surfaced with an outstretched mouth directly in front of us - about 20 yards distant. Another highlight of these trips is the visit to Sgang Gwaay, a Haida village that still has totem poles that are still standing after the village was abandoned in the 1860's. Gord is an outstanding guide who holds to the highest standard of safety and providing opportunities for guests to have genuinely meaningful experiences in a remarkable place. Gord's philosophy of attending to the present, particularly the quietude (there can be hours and hours without any noise pollution) helps to settle a busy mind. Gord is renowned for his cooking and his skillful use of his spice pantry. When he taught a kayak guiding course I attended last year, Gord emphasized that it is much easier to make rational decisions if one is relatively comfortable and that good food is a great source of comfort. The kayak fleet and gear are first-rate. Unlike, most kayak guided trips which require 1 or 2 large double kayaks, all of Gord's guests can use single kayaks - a double kayak is also available. There is a world of difference paddling a single and double kayak. Gord has different types of trips. For those with little or no experience sea kayaking, the Waters of Sgang Gwaay trip stays in calmer waters and has shorter trips between campsites. Experienced paddlers can take the Cape Freeman trip which can get out to the West Coast of Moresby Island. A trip with Gord is not for those who need an agenda. Gord always complies with the conditions of winds and waves - which may mean that you stay and continue to enjoy the same campsite. This is a great lesson for life! Nor are Gord's trips good for those who want to kayak independently of the group. But if you want to safely kayak and camp in a remote, beautiful and dynamic setting, Gord can't be beat.

Gord's attention to detail in virtually every aspect of his tour - from the thorough packing list,…read moreto the delicious campfire-cooked meals, to his diligence with safety on the water - combined to make a truly memorable experience for me during my recent 7 day 'SGang Gwaay Adventurer' tour. For those adventurers who are looking for an intimate wilderness experience with a well-seasoned guide who will help you make the most of your time in Gwaii Haanas, this is the trip for you. I highly recommend Butterfly Tours and, as someone who has self-guided many outdoor excursions before, I think the experience was well worth the investment to do this trip with a professional guide.

We paddled for 6 days and camped for 5 nights. The scenery and whale watching aspects of the trip were excellent. The camps were comfortable and well supported by occasional re-supply from the base back in Port NcNiell. The camp on Sophia Island was particularly well appointed with already set tents, cots and a nice kitchen and sitting area. The food prepared by our guide was excellent and hearty. I would certainly recommend this group for paddlers of all levels of experience.

We learned a lot from him and enjoyed spending some time getting to know him. Our guide, Korry, was also excellent. He was also friendly and welcoming and made sure we were well fed and had a good time. There is never a guarantee of finding specific wildlife when you are out in the wild, but Larry and Korry knew the animals behaviors and made sure to stay up to date on recent patterns and updates from all the other local teams in order to give us the best chance to see orcas, humpbacks, eagles, seals, and lots of other wildlife while out kayaking. Even if we didn't see any whales the entire time, it still would have been a great trip. However, we did see lots of orca and humpbacks during our time. They even came right by our island one evening, where we could see them from our dinner table and hear them while sleeping in our tents. I highly recommend going with Larry and Discovery Expeditions. We hope to make another trip in the future.

Prices are pretty reasonable and we chose the two hour option due to our limited time during the sunset period. The staff were busy but friendly and assisted us with our kayaks. They will brief you about the kayaks, safety and where to go. Now, I would select a longer time to truly appreciate Deep Cove's natural beauty when you aren't dodging other kayaks or boats. The traffic can be somewhat chaotic in the summer time and it is main area for a lot of boaters heading out of the cove. We kayak around three islands within our two hour option, but didn't relax as much as we want. Again, the salt water, slight wind, and being in the 80's made it a wonderful but brief time.

Great place to kayak, incredible views, definitely worth a visit…read more Equipment and gear were great and in great shape. Our guides were knowledgeable and got us in and out of our kayak without us getting our feet wet. I didn't give five stars for two reasons. First, the two guides seemed a bit lax, they mostly paddled with us instead of taking lead and sweep positions, despite the fact that two out of the six of us had never kayaked before. They did look back periodically to check on everyone, but it was still strange compared to other kayak tours I've been on. Second, they didn't take pictures of us, other tours I've been on do it as a matter of course and email or post pictures to everyone. Still, this was a very worthwhile experience, and everyone enjoyed the views, the seals we saw in the water, etc., and no one had trouble keeping up despite the wind and the range of both ages and kayaking experience.

This place is great!…read more My husband and I found this place by total accident via google. If we had realized its location before we paid for a rental we likely probably would have been deterred from using this place BUT I am so glad we were not deterred. We rented a kayak from here to do a self-guided tour of the Pasley Islands. It was an awesome trip. The kayak and equipment were nice and well kept and we were provided a map for our self-guided tour. We rented a double kayak for 8 hours and had it for about 7 hours. We stopped a few really quiet coves for a couple swims and lunch for a couple hours as well. Because you are starting on the sunshine coast you are away from lots of boat traffic and have really good views of the mountains and islands. You also avoid looking at the city. There was tons of sea life as well. The purple star fish is still thriving here, they were sea otters everywhere, and we paddled right past a mated pair of bald eagles. This was seriously a really good day trip from the city and a perfect cap to our Olympic Park & Vancouver vacation. I would suggest this not only for any visitor to Vancouver but also just a really good day trip or overnight trip for a local. It is important for planning to know that you need to take a ferry from West Vancouver to Langdale to get to the harbor and the Sunshine Coast; HOWEVER, this was totally worth it and I highly recommend it for multiple reasons. We parked our car at Horseshoe Bay, walked onto the ferry and took the bus from the ferry to the harbor. It was super easy and the bus from the ferry in Langdale to the harbor took 5 minutes and was super easy to navigate. You could also bring your car onto the island and do some driving on the sunshine coast as there is a ton to see but since we weren't staying overnight we went for the economic option. Round trip ferry fare was about $16 each ($13 USD at the time) The ferry ride took 40 minutes and the views are insane. Honestly this is more like a 40 minute sightseeing tour. The scenery was beautiful. I point out all this information because I think some people would see the ferry and this places location as a deterrent, and it should be a reason to go not a deterrent. Gibsons is quiet, has great restaurants at far less cost then Vancouver. The only reason I didn't do 5 stars was because we did feel a bit rushed at the dock, but I think this was more due to the fact that we showed up 30 minutes early and the owner was kind enough to put us in the water right away even though by being early we overlapped with two other reservations. Another improvement that could be made for the shop would be to explain the private property high water line rule, since we weren't from B.C. we didn't know the rules. It took my husband and I a while to understand that we could stop on the islands as long as we were below the high-water line and not on top of the houses. We kept avoiding spots because we could see a "Private Property" signs and when we finally got close enough to read the small print we realized that we could infact stop at these spots as long as we stayed below the high water line, which is easy enough.
