Widgeon Valley National Wildlife Area is located at Pit Lake in Pit Meadows. The only way to…read moreaccess the wildlife area is by paddle boat (Kayak or Canoe) as no motor boat accesss is permitted. To access Widgeon Slough you must drive to Pit Lake at Grant Narrows Regional Park. You then Paddle across the Narrows and into Widgeon Slough. Like Pit Lake, Widgeon Slough is Tidal and can cause real problems for people if they paddle in at high tide. Places that you could pass through before may have only 2 inches of water or none at all! This place is amazing though. There is almost dead silence wile in the slough. There is only the sound of birds, your paddle and maybe the odd plane above. There are a lot of water ways to explore in the Slough but one place to get to is the Widgeon Camp ground. It is Paddle access only but has 2 outhouses and multiple tent pads. No fires are permitted here at all and you can get huge fines if caught. From Widgen Camp you have arrived in Pinecone Burke Provincial Park and have a whole new place to explore.

The owner Tony communicated all the information with us ahead of time, he had the kayaks ready for us when we arrived, explained the route and things to look out for- including jumping fish! and generally made the tour easy, successful and so much fun for us! We had fantastic sunny clear weather, calm waters, high tide, and fish jumping all around us! It was amazing to see. We look forward to returning! Tony offers tours for new and experienced paddlers. I took my boyfriend out to Sooke to rent Hobie kayaks and we had a blast!…read more Allen gave us great suggestions about where we should pedal around and thoroughly explained how to use the kayaks. He outfitted us with everything we would need including a banana to snack on! I felt completely safe the entire time even though I'd been nervous going into it and my boyfriend still felt like he'd had an adventure. We're both from the prairies so seeing sea stars, seals, crab, eagles, and even boats was pretty exciting for us. Excellent fun and we plan to do it again!

My mom and I were not great at using the oars but Allen was patient and gave us tips to help us! He was entertaining and taught us how to use kelp as a horn! We saw lots of wildlife including some cute seals that we got really close to! What i liked: - impressive nature - nice, friendly guides, who also share more about nature - overall well run - well stocked lunch What can be improved: - upfront communication with those who book via viator. I had to chase myself to get details - at the start we need to sign a waiver form, which also allowed wedge rafting the right yo make pictures of participants for commercial purposes. According to reception, only if this is signed, are participants allowed to raft. It feels like privacy legislation is less strict in canada... Some tips: - it is cheaper to book when you are whistler than via viator, if you are in europe - some neopreen socks may be nice if you quickly get cold feet (i had taken along mine) -

Remarkably, we randomly stopped in Cowichan Bay to grab a bite to eat and found this place. I called from where we were having breakfast and talked to Georgia, who I think is the owner. When I told her that we wanted to kayak, like--in 5 minutes--she was incredibly accommodating. We walked over, and within about 15 minutes, we were out on the water for a one hour rental, reasonably priced at $25. The kayaks were super super clean, which really impressed me. Their dock is also really low, which made getting out and especially coming back in really easy. I will say that there's not much to see once you're out there. The seals hanging out sunning themselves and popping up in the water were the highlight. Maybe if we'd gone out longer there would have been some more interesting scenery to see, but all in all, we were grateful this rental place was there.
