I always enjoy westerly packing. Great place to stop in for sandwiches. Always fresh, made to order and some of the best quality meats. The bread is great, in between a hard and soft roll for texture. They use a balsamic dressing instead of oil and vinegar. Their toppings are basic, simple, and fresh. We were on a quest for "soupys" (or soppressatas Rhode Island-style for all you non-Rhodies!). We first had these delicious cured meats from a friend who brought them back from Westerly a couple years back and have been thinking of them ever since. So we packed a lunch and made the long haul to Westerly ( a 33 minute trip for us - very faaar in RI terms) to Westerly Packing where they make them on the premises. We were also pleasantly surprised that the business is also a full-fledged grocery store, with a staffed butcher counter and specialty meats! "Soupy" a Westerly, Rhode Island specialty. Westerly has taken the soppresata and made it all its own with this cured sausage. And who makes most of the soupy in Westerly? ...Well, at least largely believed to be the best...Westerly processing and packing! Sold in sweet, mild, hot, extra hot, and fresh/uncured and uncooked. Westerly Packing is so much more than soupy though! It is a fully stocked Italian Market tucked away in the back of a residential area. It's a "if you know, you know" kinda place. And I am so happy my cousin knew in order to take me shopping here! The cuts of meat are unbelievable. There is a cowboy cut of steak SOOO thick and large; am sure it could feed a family of six! Love all the imports as well as frozen section of pastas, ravioli, etc. Seriously great Italian Market, rivaling many in some nearby larger cities! Previously I praised Westerly Packing for thin slice ribeye for teriyaki beef. This time it was another cut for Korean kalbi. The butcher knew exactly what I needed and how much for 4 people. I put in an order for flanken-style beef short ribs for pick up the following day. Upon pickup the meat was better than expected. Perfect cut and thickness. After braising and then broiled the ribs came out tender and near perfect. Great place for meats. read more

There are some things everyone craves for when they move far away. Having lived in CT and now I'm Texas I occasionally crave for some soupy. What is soupy you may ask. It looks like homemade pepperoni with different levels of heat. It is very hard to cut but it does withstand the weather like tacky(?) did in the old western days. I discovered it while working in a shipyard and the old timers would eat it as a snack as they worked. I was in Rhode Island and my friend took me to Westerly Packing company to buy some to bring back to Texas. I expected a dingy looking place but this was a first class store in the inside. Lots of meats cut to order along with sauces and Large dog bones for Large dogs. Their soupy is the very best. They run the gamut of heat from regular to xxx spicy which of course I bought. Yup it is very spicy and best part is that not to many people like it so it is all mine. BTW they do ship their products. read more

Very good Italian specialty foods place in middle of No where (anyplace outside the Bronx is middle of no where). Lots of pasta selection - brands, types etc. , cheeses and jarred and canned foods. Not quite the wide selection you'd see in North Jersey or NY but pretty, pretty good. They make their own soppresata too which is very good, fresh sausage (which is way too spicy and salty) and other prepared foods and nice butcher shop which look very good too. They also have a modest restaurant / commercial supply section here too. A welcome port in New England for mostly good Italian specialities. read more

I love this place! The meats are incredibly fresh and fair priced. Hubby and the guys get their meat here when suppi season comes along. They'll even mix it for you -according to your blend! After renovations this place looks amazing. It's bright and airy. Wide aisles. I always come here for my spices and seasonings. Especially the expensive stuff like cinnamon sticks and vanilla pods. I can get a large canister of garlic powder for $4 compared to the small bottles at the grocery store for the same amount of money! I just refill my little bottles and keep Westerly Packing spice bottles in the basement. I also like going to the back of the store. I know. It's kinda scary. It's unmanned. And you're not even sure if you're supposed to be back there. But rest assured you're allowed! Back there you'll find take out containers, plastic cups with lids, restaurant sized containers of spices, sauces and seasonings, frozen foods, giant cans of soups, frozen foods- like raviolis, seafood, meatballs etc. There's also cleaning supplies, cases of toilet paper, disposable utensils... I can go on and on. I get those small 2ounce cups here. Because you can buy them here without having to buy the lids. I always seem to have waaaay more lids left over when I buy them as a combo pack. I also get take out boxes here for church functions when we serve food and find ourselves with a bunch of left overs. If you're looking to make wine- they've got all the essentials. And you can order what ever you need. Tons and tons of parking here. And it's off the beaten path so getting in and out of the lot isn't as stressful as getting in and out of McQuades. read more

I usually go to another butcher shop for cow tongue, but they didn't have it. I called this place and they have a lot. My first impression of this place was that it's pretty big. I know I only went in for the tongue but I had to check out the place. They got pasta and all kinds of different meats from other places. They even have homemade sausage. So I grabbed myself a smaller packaged sausage of a smoked sweet sausa. I wish I got the big one. It is sooooo good! Right next to the frozen tongue as other organs and parts! Like a cow heart! Christmas, a time of joy and peace, and hopefully, trust. A time when you order the roast weeks in advance to ensure you get exactly what you want. Except at Westerly Packing, where you get exactly what they give you, hoping you won't know the difference. I know the difference. When I called in my order, and expressly asked for an entire rib roast, grade "Choice" and sealed in the cryovac packaging, the attendant crisply told me all of their rib roasts are Choice. Perfect. Order placed. When I arrived to pick up the roast on 12/21, the package was labeled "Select", not "Choice". There is a difference. Select is the lowest grade of beef just above the beef that doesn't get graded at all. The butcher explained that there was a delivery issue, and the Choice beef came in as Select. Really? Not a single Choice graded rib roast in the building, and in truth, they never ordered Choice. I was lied to by the bimbo on the phone, and then again by the Butcher about the delivery. For all of you WP customers expecting to get Choice graded beef ribs, well, you didn't. Details matter. Misrepresenting your business to a chef who knows the difference matters. The first time at Westerly packing, I anticipated only a butcher shop with an array of meats. It was so much more. There is an Italian market with a fairly large selection of pastas, sauces and other groceries which were unique to the area. I found squid ink pasta which was delicious when cooked at home. I also purchased one of the made in store Boston cream pies. It was delicious! While I seldom ever post anything regarding food service/reviews, I am with this entry.My wife and adult "kids" were planning my son's bday celebration when my son requested a "foodie" trip to Westerly Packing as part his bday celebration, as he was awed by his initial visit earlier. My wife, daughter, son and his girlfriend all went on 5/1/21, and purchased several things, including a container of lobster bisque for Dad...me. They all were in all of the facility, highly impressed at the huge amount of offerings. I just tried some of the bisque and was very surprised. While the color and smell indicated lobster, the only taste and texture of the soup was... broccoli, totally watered down broccolI, chewable pieces and all. HORRIBLE.
