It's got this really spooky, abandoned vibe. If someone were filming a post apocalyptic farm scene, or a creepy spooky movie, this would be a good place to do it. We didn't see anyone else while we were there. The mansion looked slightly decrepit, and everything had a shabby, timeworn look. There's a really decent set of trails that wind throughout the property, but they're not blazed very well, or at all really. It's mostly a matter of keeping to the map and wandering around the wide trails. My biggest complaint is the mixed messages on the allowance of dogs. The webpage says that dogs are welcomed, on leash. Once you get there, there are signs that say dogs aren't allowed. It would be nice if the parks department could get their messaging straight on that.

My first historical marker in the Empire State, this one points out a more recent happening. This…read moremarker is located at the entrance to the New York State Thruway. I was able to find a spot to stop my car that was probably not a legal space. The marker reads, "Rockland Brink's Robbery. On October 20, 1981, a three-year crime spree in the New York Metropolitan area came to an end at this site. Members of the Weather Underground, a radical domestic terrorist group, robbed a Brink's armored car at the Nanuet Mall. Using high-powered weapons, they stole 1.6 million dollars, and shot and killed security guard Peter Paige. At this entrance to the New York State Thruway, the Nyack Police Department set up a roadblock and was ambushed by the assailants. A fierce shootout ensued. As a reult, Sergeant Edward J. O'Grady Jr and Police Officer Waverly "Chipper" Brown were shot and killed. All the suspects were apprehended. Subsequent trials held in Goshen and White Plains led to their convictions." The 1981 Brink's robbery was an armed robbery and three related murders committed on October 20, 1981, which were carried out by six Black Liberation Army members: Mutulu Shakur, Kuwasi Balagoon, Solomon Bouines (Samuel Brown), Mtayari Shabaka Sundiata, Edward Joseph, and Cecilio "Chui" Ferguson; and four former members of the Weather Underground, now belonging to the May 19th Communist Organization, consisting of David Gilbert, Judith Alice Clark, Kathy Boudin, and Marilyn Buck. They stole $1.6 million in cash from a Brink's armored car at the Nanuet Mall, in Nanuet, New York (about six miles west), killing a Brink's guard, Peter Paige, seriously wounding Brink's guard Joseph Trombino, slightly wounding Brink's truck driver guard, James Kelly, subsequently killing two Nyack police officers, Edward O'Grady and Waverly Brown, and seriously wounding Police Detective Artie Keenan. Just a handful of the CT Historical Commission town markers I've photographed are located inside…read morebuildings, usually bolted or fastened to an interior wall. But Stamford's is the first one I've seen that is not only located inside a building, but is mounted on a stand that sits on the floor. When you enter the lobby at the Government Center complex, you'll see it to the left of the Cashiering and Permitting Door. Dedicated in 1973, it has an inscription on one side. The sign is in terrific condition, given that it's been sheltered from the elements over the years. The marker tells the history of this very old town, tracing back to the 1640 purchase of land from the Toquams and Shippan Indians. The town was named Stamford (after an English town) in 1642 and its area originally included parts of New York State. Citizen soldiers from Stamford fought in the American Revolution and a Fort Stamford was built in 1781 to defend the town. Lots of good information on a marker that's located in a fairly unique setting !

The…read morereflection of the sun on the water, the view itself and the chirping of the birds is a great feeling. This is a great place to go jogging, walking or bike riding which I often see people do. I love walking my dog on this route when I want to take her on longer walks..she gets to enjoy the long walk and I get to transport myself mentally outside of the Bronx with the view of the water, the trees etc. If you're going to walk your dogs be cautious, I don't allow her to go to the grass area because there is glass All over! Near the fence and especially on the grass side. The reason is because the evil people like to break car windows at night in this area. The reservoir is notorious for that and tire robberies. There's never glass on the actual path you would normally walk on. It's never crowded, even during the summer. There's probably 1 or 2 groups of people who will pullout chairs and listen to music coming out of their cars but it never gets crowded like the park across the street does. Clean up of the area tends to be good, there will be garbage across the fence area which is clear has just been blown away from the garbage can nearby. It usually gets cleared by the next day.

He has a large beard and crumpled hat and his eyes are half-open as if he has just woken up. His boots and hands blend in with the ground like he has become part of the ground. It is located on Irvington's Main Street under a beech tree between Town Hall and the Main Street School. It was unveiled in Irvington on September 21, 2002."

A light for the…read morebirds Stamford Harbor can be a treacherous place to sail into at the best of times and in bad weather it can be deadly. So in 1882 a lighthouse was built at the entrance of the harbor to mark the way. It was a pretty generic "sparkplug" type of light made primarily of cast iron, very typical of the time. The parts were made by a foundry up in Boston and then bolted together on site. Tons of rock and cement were dumped in place for the foundation. The light was deactivated in 1953 and the 4th order Fresnel Lens removed but the light still sits as a private aid to navigation. The light is about 60 feet tall and actually has seven levels inside. It wasn't only a lighthouse but it had to be the home for the keeper and his family. The lights sits out about two thirds of a mile from land so it is difficult to see unless you actually go out there by kayak or some other small boat. It's not open to the public and went up for sale a while back. The last I knew the asking price was about 1.6 million. Of course that includes the rocks around the lighthouse too. The light isn't very well know because it sits in a difficult to see location and the rocks around it makes it hard to get close to except at high tide in a small boat. It's lonely place that is known now only to the sea, wind and the numerous seagulls that seem to love the rocks around the light.
