We had a tour…read morewith 1 other couple, so it's not a popular location and it probably gets less funding as a State Park site vs. National Park Site so as far as a historical house goes it's not the most intriguing or lavish, but it's nice if you are in the area. It's not as impressive as say Monticello and not as popular and informative as FDR's house not to far away, but it has its charm. Being hidden away can be an asset, as when you are at the house, it's far up the hill from the road and really quiet, so you can get a good sense of what Mr. Jay would have enjoyed in his retirement. You can feel the peacefulness and why he'd choose to live here after living in Manhattan. The tour is about an hour and there was a farmer's market set up in the adjacent lot, but otherwise there isn't a lot to see/do nearby. Still, it's worth seeing if it's not too far from you or if you have other things in the area to see.

Unfortunately, when I visited, the Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site was closed due to Covid. As a result, I was only able to check it out from the outside. After parking in their parking lot, we walked around the exterior. There were a few placards to read. And we peaked through the windows to see what we could see inside. I'd definitely like to return one day and get the full experience! Within walking distance from Philipse Manor Hall is a park and several restaurants.

There are many displays that you can play around. We didn't think we would spend an hour here. We thought, maybe 20 minutes at most. If you love old historical building and its interiors, this one might not for you because the house itself now is just a shell. But if you like history from different perspectives, you'll love this place. The stories here balance between Munsee tribes, slaves and Philipse's family. The staff here were very friendly, polite, and helpful. Admission $6. Oh and if you collect NPS passport stamp cancellations, this place is part of Hudson Valley NHA passport program.

The American Revolution played out along the Hudson's banks--from the first riots protesting the British Quartering Act on Golden Hill in Lower Manhattan to the chaining of the Hudson and Benedict Arnold's attempted betrayal of West Point in the Highlands. Just north of the New Jersey border, Tappan, derived from a Lenape Indian word thought to mean "cold water," has the oldest surviving building in Rockland County. The DeWint House, owned by Patriot Johannes DeWint, holds a special place in American history as it served as a temporary headquarters for George Washington during the American Revolution. Washington was a guest of the house twice in 1780 and twice in 1783. It was here that Washington signed the death warrant of British Major John Andre, a spy who conspired with American General Benedict Arnold to betray West Point. Upon arrival as first-timers yesterday, my partner and I were the only vehicle in the spacious parking lot. The house built using brick and indigenous stone is a prime example of Hudson Valley Dutch Colonial architecture, showcasing the unique blend of Dutch and American styles that were prevalent during the colonial period. The house's bottom floor (the top floor is off-limits) houses the North and South Rooms. The South Room was where Washington and his staff resided. The North Room was where work was done, especially with regard to the trial and execution of Andre. The rooms are both open to the public for viewing through glass partitions. Period furniture, bedding, and desks are among the items one sees. An adjacent 19th-century carriage house contains displays of artifacts uncovered at the site during archaeological digs. A 15-minute video about the historic site can be seen, and an over 150-year-old grandfather clock keeps the correct time. So much history happened in this spot that changed this country forever. Fascinating Revolutionary War fort that affords an easy walk along a foot path to all the key…read morelocations. Along the way the interpretive kiosks tell the story of the 1779 Battle of Stony Point, a midnight raid that was conducted so expertly by Continental forces, led by "Mad Anthony" Wayne, that it would make SAS Commandos envious. Due to some construction the museum was not open on the day my wife and I visited, and there were no reenactors around but it was still well worth a visit. Much of that had to do with Eric, one of the site's docents. Eric was very informative, educational and just an all around great guy to talk to. I knew a bit about the battle but Eric's detailed information was illuminating. And it wasn't just history of the battle we learned about. He told us about everything from the 19th century lighthouse to the ancient glacial fjord that formed the Hudson to the Eastern Cicada-Killers! Thanks, Eric! All in all, Stony Point Historic Site is well worth a visit. You could probably cover most of it in an hour or two but if you're history freaks like us you'll want to plan for three to four.

This marker commemorates the Continental soldiers who died in the Battle of Young's House on February 3, 1780, a lesser-known but poignant skirmish of the Revolutionary War. Located near Grasslands Road, in the cloverleaf between the Sprain Brook Parkway and its southbound entrance, the site marks the burial of 13 Continental and 3 British soldiers who were killed during a surprise attack by a force of 500-600 British and Loyalist troops led by Lt. Col. Chapple Norton and James DeLancey. The Continental outpost, headquartered at Joseph Young's house, had been a strategic depot for supplies and a defensive position protecting the area between Bedford and the Hudson River. The house itself stood near what is now Blythedale Children's Hospital, and it had endured multiple raids before the final, devastating assault in 1780. The soldiers were originally buried nearby, but in 1923, their remains were reinterred beneath this monument donated by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). A quiet testament to the sacrifices made in the snowy woods of Westchester County, where young men fought and died far from the famous battlefields. There isn't much for parking here - it is a traffic cloverleaf for a major roadway. But if you use caution and watch for other cars, you may be able to visit. It sits in a park that is right next to the train station. The structure itself is not too exciting but when it was erected in 1999, it was the largest stained glass structure in the world. It has become the landmark for the city, which says more about how plain the city is rather than the structure itself.

The address given is of the UBS building. But it's actually across the street. Hidden behind a tree lined sidewalk. And the back side is just white glass, making it even more difficult to find. It's probably easiest to find/see from the train station. There is absolutely no parking nearby. So I ended up parking a few blocks away and walking over. The day I went, it was cloudy and overcast. I bet this is absolutely beautiful in the sun. But still- why hide a million dollar piece of art? From Wikipedia: "The Stamford Cone is a 14 metre high structural artwork in the shape of a cone built as a landmark feature for the headquarters building of UBS AG in Stamford, Connecticut. The structure, which entirely consists of stained glass by British artist Brian Clarke, was designed by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and engineered by Dewhurst MacFarlane & Partners. Pirates birds and…read morelights Great Captain's Island Lighthouse was built in 1868 and was actually one of six lighthouses of the same design around Long Island Sound built at the time. Made of huge blocks of brownstone, this lighthouse can survive anything the ocean and nature can throw at it. Great Captain's Island is frequently said to be named for the infamous Captain Kidd but it is far more likely the island is named after Captain Daniel Patrick, one of the founders of the town of Greenwich. The island is about 17 acres and a lovely place indeed. Noted for it's large population of birds, herons, ospreys, egrets and even some owls, the island is alive in the spring with nests and colors. The island was a very exclusive private club and casino but that all burned down in 1947. For many years it was open only to residents of the town of Greenwich but now anyone can go out there. A ferry runs during the summer months but since it is only about two miles off shore it can be kayaked to at any time. The lighthouse is no longer active but it is still a wonderful sight. No tours of the inside are available but just seeing the lighthouse is impressive indeed. Along with it's five other siblings, this lighthouse truly represents the golden age of lighthouse building.

I have always interacted with the Caretaker (Mike) while on the island. He and his team have been super helpful at all times. Mike's team are quite frankly an asset to the town as they are the very reason the island is kept in the condition that it is!! Perhaps the previous Yelper was upset as she isn't a town resident/didn't have a beach pass?

According to recently discovered records, the house served as a tavern during the 18th century. Thus came the persistent legend that Aaron Burr stopped here for liquid refreshment en route to the Hermirage. This house is on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places." The main floor is furnished with period furniture, the upstairs houses a children's museum full of toys (temporarily closed) as well as a library. They stage events like cider making and St. Nick's Day in December, it's worth stopping by one of the open houses.
