ArtsWestchester is so much more than an art gallery. Last fall, I attended both their September…read moreJazzFest concerts and the October Serious Fun Arts Festival that brought live music and art into the streets of White Plains. They are striving to bring the work of area artists to the downtown to offer color and life to the city. When you drive around White Plains, you will see many new murals that have been added as part of their public art program. I applaud their efforts and look forward to supporting more of their events, may of which are free to the public. The gallery just presented the work of contemporary fabric artists and was a great place to visit on my lunch break.

I was shown a space about three months ago, I asked for a negotiated price, and I was told that there was no negotiation on the workspace pricing, OK no problem. I was hoping to be in "my space" in Arts Westchester at the beginning of June, though all of the management staff, was very uncooperative, very unprofessional, very arrogant, and just downright smug. Each appointment was set by management at Arts Westchester, and each appointment was disregard by the management staff. First, it was Covid, second continued meetings, third I was told I had to have a background check, at this point red flags are everywhere. My ethnicity is of mixed origin, in my heart, I was hoping that perhaps I might be overthinking, that the reason was leaning towards racism. Just because a gallery displays artwork from people of color on display, does not mean that racism isn't hiding in the shadows. Persistence is how Artists, or anyone looking to move forward in their career emerge and grow during their travels/careers. Today is Wednesday, July 27, 5:12 PM Eastern standard time, today I finally got the email, we don't want you at our gallery, not in that many words, still in a very arrogant and blunt email. I was told by the owner a week ago, (don't you have somewhere else to go?) (Followed up by you are not a priority!) extremely arrogant, extremely rude, extremely pretentious place, that includes all management staff that I have encountered. Once again a barrage of red flags. I do not leave reviews, although, at this place, Arts Westchester in White Plains New York, something is going on, beneath the hood, something just doesn't feel right. No, I am not being petty, I am sharing what yelp is made for, either positive or negative experiences in a business. In my personal opinion, Arts Westchester is a red flag place to be wary of. The management staff, is very unprofessional, except for one person, other than that forget about it. Also, the host that answers the phone, is amazing! I hope this helps if you're interested in pursuing a place in Arts Westchester, in White Plains New York. Please share your experiences if you have them. Love, strength, and positive energy always. Very respectfully, and always sincerely, Irrix Screen

Made of huge blocks of brownstone, this lighthouse can survive anything the ocean and nature can throw at it. Great Captain's Island is frequently said to be named for the infamous Captain Kidd but it is far more likely the island is named after Captain Daniel Patrick, one of the founders of the town of Greenwich. The island is about 17 acres and a lovely place indeed. Noted for it's large population of birds, herons, ospreys, egrets and even some owls, the island is alive in the spring with nests and colors. The island was a very exclusive private club and casino but that all burned down in 1947. For many years it was open only to residents of the town of Greenwich but now anyone can go out there. A ferry runs during the summer months but since it is only about two miles off shore it can be kayaked to at any time. The lighthouse is no longer active but it is still a wonderful sight. No tours of the inside are available but just seeing the lighthouse is impressive indeed. Along with it's five other siblings, this lighthouse truly represents the golden age of lighthouse building.

If you are looking for any amenities (a snack bar, fancy showers, and/or beachfront waitress service) - this is not the island for you. If you are looking for a quiet location to read a book, BBQ, and let your kids play in the sand, - this is the ticket. I am also not sure what the previous review was complaining about? I have always interacted with the Caretaker (Mike) while on the island. He and his team have been super helpful at all times. Mike's team are quite frankly an asset to the town as they are the very reason the island is kept in the condition that it is!! Perhaps the previous Yelper was upset as she isn't a town resident/didn't have a beach pass?

I live in White Plains and follow that route but on longer walk I go all the way to Valhalla. It follows the Bronx River and is nice paved trail where you find a variety of wildlife and posts with educational informationall along the way. I like that this pathway is always clean and well maintained. If is great for runners and cyclists since is paved and open all year long... it closest at dawn and it gets pretty dark at night because there's no lights in most areas. Definately recommend to anyone who want to get some fresh air.

I seriously have a Love & Hate relationship with the Bronx River Pkwy. Here's the Love: (1)From tip to tip (i.e., Soundview in The Bronx to White Plains, NY- it literally takes me a solid 1/2 hour. (2)As you're driving South or North, I really feel like I'm actually driving through the woods somewhere Upstate- it's lush when Fall gets here and you see the captivating foliage in that 2-Lane winding stretch. (3) Calming walking path along the Pkwy. (4) Tranquil Waterfall and makes you feel like you're in a Forest. The Hate? (1) freaking patched up potholes that you see and feel all over the Pkwy. (2) Narrow lanes that drive me crazy. (3) From beginning to end, there are at least 5-6 traffic lights on the Pkwy. Really? Bronx River Pkwy serves its purpose- but when I'm pressed for serious time heading South, I hop on The Sprain quick- has 3 Lanes and gets me to The Bronx in 20 minutes flat.

They were housed in nearby Camp Shanks, and on the day they left America to join the war, 40,000 men a month walked down the pier, and boarded either a ship to France or a ferry to New York on their way to England. For many, the walk down the Piermont pier was their final walk on American soil. This striking monument features a statue of a helmeted GI in full uniform. He has a hand grenade and a shovel on his belt, and a sash with many pockets for equipment storage. His right hand is raised in a sign of farewell. His left hand is resting on a stone whose plaque bears the following inscription: Last Stop U.S.A. During World War Two, 40,000 U.S. troops per month, including many Piermont residents, passed this spot enroute to the end of Piermont Pier, the largest port of embarkation on the East Coast, where ships were waiting to transport them to military duty in war-torn Europe. Many of these troops landed on the shores of France where the invasion began on June 6, 1944. Thus this area came to be known as "Last Stop U.S.A." After the war came to a victorious conclusion, some 533,869 men returned home to the U.S.A. first setting foot on their homeland at the end of that same Piermont Pier. "Lest We Forget," many of the men who embarked from Piermont never returned. This plaque is dedicated to the honor of those who served and the sacred memory of those who never returned.
