My friend, who is an artist, introduced me to this place, and she says that CAW has a strong reputation in the art community. I have zero art background, but I have taken drawing and photography classes here. All the teachers were friendly, enthusiastic, and well-prepared. I felt like I learned a lot and that the teachers were encouraging of beginners. They have a huge variety of classes here including cool stuff I'd like to try like metal sculpture. There are both short workshops (good for artists who are already well-versed in a topic but want to pick up a new technique) and longer classes. The cost is a little pricey, but well-worth it in my opinion. They also have an exhibition space and show really nice artwork there. This past summer, my friend and I went to see a juried show there and it was very good. The Creative Arts Workshop is a fantastic place to learn art and join an artistic community. I can't recommend it highly enough.

In the Perspective Drawing of Buildings and Architecture workshop, Eric March introduced strategies, gave students a chance to experiment, and consulted individually to discuss what works for each person and how to expand skills. His presentation was clear, and his comments were gentle and specific. For me, as a non-professional with some drawing experience, the class was engaging and informative - a delightful way to spend two afternoons. Being able to see and draw things from different perspectives makes drawing more fun and satisfying. As someone who ordinarily is more interested in life than buildings, I also realized the advantage of starting with boxier shapes, knowing that I can apply the same techniques to the animate world now that I have seen how they work. I highly recommend the workshop and other opportunities to work with Eric March.

Gilbert Company (known for originating the Erector Set) introduced their 'American Flyer' line of model trains just after World War II. The trains were very popular throughout the 1950s, but the rise of popularity with television sets and the death of company founder A.C. Gilbert created a decline in sales. The company was defunct by 1967. The Eli Whitney Museum has a large collection of old A.C. Gilbert products, including several American Flyer trains. Each year, the museum sets up a model railroad display from Thanksgiving to mid-January. Walter Zawalich is the museum's American Flyer Curator and he meticulously restores and maintains the trains and the display each year. I've been going to see the Holiday Train Display at the Museum since I was a young boy. My father used to collect American Flyer trains and we went to see the display often. I later introduced my wife to the tradition and now our two sons. In addition to the trains themselves, we love the attention to detail of the layout which resembles a miniature landscape of New Haven. You can continue to see the Holiday Train display on Saturdays and Sundays until January 14th and admission is FREE!

Raj, who runs the Trumbull and North Haven center is very easy to work with as well. I like that they offer support classes but also classes for enrichment. My son, who's a bit mite advanced in both subjects, is no longer feeling unchallenged in school because he takes these classes in between! MATH: With today's changing times where elementary and middle schools are leaning toward the common core German method of teaching (like the more well known and reputable universities in our country!) I think a program like this is going to be critical to helping our children understand the fundamentals of math. Schools today may not be able to teach both with an aggressive/limited school schedule unlike foreign countries who attend school year round and have the proper time. I have already found my son living to solve math problems and testing himself on skills. Unprompted! READING: great to learn handwriting, reading technique. My son has always loved books but now I find he's also loves writing things for me to read. It's awesome. We also discovered in school he is a speed reader and enjoys long novels. These classes ares teaching him how to use words properly and also the various meaning to the same words. Including sound variations. Summary: well worth the investment.

While in the area, I had to make a visit. It was founded in 1701 and is one of the top 3 Ivy Leagues. It is known for their law, political science, medicine, drama, and history programs. Yale University - New Haven, CT…read more Yale isn't just an Ivy League--it's a living museum of academia, history, and innovation. Founded in 1701, it's the third-oldest university in the U.S., and its campus is a stunning blend of Gothic architecture, leafy courtyards, and cutting-edge research hubs. The School of Engineering & Applied Science is especially impressive. From robotics labs to sustainability initiatives, Yale Engineering fosters a tight-knit, forward-thinking community that's deeply committed to inclusion and innovation. The facilities are modern, collaborative, and designed to spark creativity. Yale also boasts a vibrant Asian American community, supported by the Asian American Cultural Center, student organizations, and affinity groups that celebrate heritage, identity, and belonging. It's a place where diversity isn't just welcomed--it's woven into the fabric of campus life. Parking? Surprisingly manageable. Yale offers a range of lots and garages with reasonable rates, and there are even free parking options for transit users and carpoolers. Just be sure to check the campus map or visitor parking guide before you go. The surrounding area has its charm, but like any urban campus, some neighborhoods can feel sketchy, especially after dark. Stick to well-lit paths and main streets, and you'll be fine. Whether you're touring the campus, attending a lecture, or just soaking in the academic energy, Yale is a must-visit. It's a place where tradition meets transformation--and it's got the brains, beauty, and boldness to prove it. Boomsauce Scale: B - basura (trash) BS - basic (come on! Try harder) BS + - better (Yo!
