My husband and I recently moved to the Urbandale area few months ago so we were wanting to go to a veterinary shop closer to our home for our dog. However when my husband called to make an appointment they required a $65.00' non- refundable security deposit to finalize the appointment. That should of been a red flag but we agreed. Our appointment was scheduled out few weeks and Everytime we drove by this place we notice no business or cars ever seem to be in the parking lot . We worried if their business was down and still wonder why we had to pay that deposit? We began to question the care our dog would receive if money up front was sole concern. So yeah we cancelled and stayed with our original vet and lost the $65.00 . I never experience that before, not even at a doctor's office if I had to cancel or reschedule. People really making money on our emotional attachment for our pets these days. read more

We have two cats and decided to use this vet because it was closest. We have gone in for one cat having a respiratory infection and ear infection and the other having conjunctivitis and they got their annual shots there. Dr. Janssen is really good with them and he always knows exactly what will help them. He's very thorough and explains everything to you so you're never left in the dark. He's also very honest. We're moving soon, but we will still keep this vet even though we're losing the convenience of the location. read more

Staff is incredibly courteous and caring. They remember my Bennie by name every time we come in for shots or checkups. She is our first dog, and she had a challenging history, so we have a lot of questions, and staff and Dr Janssen patiently answered everything and put us at ease. Pet care can get expensive, but West Side Vet Clinic asks reasonable prices, offers discounts on preventatives when purchased in bulk (and even handles rebates for us!), and explains care options clearly to avoid surprises. Very friendly staff. The vet is very knowledgeable and patient in answering questions (I had tons as a new dog owner!).

I have taken my two rescue dogs to Dr. Harmon for several years. He is very patient with them, offering enough treats to make my timid dog excited when we pull into the parking lot! This works wonders when he examines them. I trust Dr. Harmon's prognosis and he has referred us to a specialist when necessary. He does not go overboard with testing and is open to my ideas. The staff is super professional and kind. The costs are very reasonable. This is the way all vet offices should be! It makes it possible to take great care of my two sweet little rescue dogs. read more

Dr. Jennings takes a nice amount of time with us at the appointments, and explains things in a way that is easy to understand. The staff is lo very knowledgeable and friendly. I had my cat for over 17 1/2 years. He was with me through deaths in my family, flew across the country, me and was my companion. On April the 14th, when he was 19, I took him to this place for the first time. He was severely dehydrated. Dr. Janssen gave a "guarded" diagnosis and expressed reluctance to take a blood sample because of a severe heart murmur. They i indicated they would call me in half an hour. About two hours later I get a call from this Dr. who said he had slightly improved. He did a get blood sample - $200 - and found nothing wrong. "He is 19", he said. Wouldn't know more about cancer without further tests. Told me a little about what to get for food. When I asked about a corticosteroid he thought that was a "very good idea". Now I'm no DVM, but is giving a corticosteroid, which has a diuretic effect, to a dehydrated cat a "good" idea? When I went to pick up my cat he did not even consult with me, he was sitting at his computer in the back. AFTER I paid the over $250 for the exam, bloodwork and Dexamethasone shot the receptionist brought my cat out by the desk. The Dr. then came out by the reception area and said "IVRC's open". I then then asked about giving him water via drip bag, which the Dr. had shown me during initial consultation. He then brought out and I paid for that, over $40. I THEN had to ask him how often I should give it. I had initially posted this shortly after this visit because I didn't know if I was acting out of anger and other emotions. Small animal clinics are very competitive. There are at least four within a five mile radius within my area. read more

I have been taking my pets (2) cats and (2) dogs to Dr. David Janssen for several years. He is very knowledgeable and gentle with pets. He and his staff are very caring and keep you updated in matters of surgery or if your pet is kept overnight for any reason. They recommend treatments for your pet and do not try to " pressure" sell you as some other vets do. Dr. Janssen performed surgery on one of my dogs for a benign tumor on her leg and he successfully removed it . My dog recovered quickly and is healthy now. Because of Dr. Janssen's skills, I had no doubts how my dog would turn out. From regular pet wellness visits to any concerns, no question is too ridiculous to ask . The staff makes you feel completely comfortable and you leave more knowledgeable and content that your pet is getting the best care they can possibly receive. Fees are competitive with Vet services elsewhere. I have seen several Vets with my animals over the years, and Dr. Janssen has proven to be the Vet who I trust the most . I know that I'm going to get an accurate diagnosis and several choices for treatment, Dr.Janssen will give you a print out estimate if asked for surgeries or procedures so you know the approximate cost ahead of time. I really appreciate this Vet and his staff. He will always do what is right for your pets as well as his pet parents ! read more

My wife and I brought our newly adopted pup in for an initial visit and to get shots. I was impressed with how clean the facility was when I walked in; clean floors, well organized and no lingering smells. We were received by a very friendly assistant at the front desk, who quickly assisted us to the private room. The room was also very clean and organized. Dr. Janssen was prompt to meet with us, was very informative and knowledgeable, very patient with the pup, and took the time to explain everything and answer questions. He was able to provide suggestions to us for pet care without "pressuring" us and was up front about all products and prices. Speaking of, the final bill did not break the bank either; it was actually much less than I was expecting. I would certainly recommend Dr. Janssen and the West Side Vet Clinic. read more
