We took our sick puppy to see them while we were on a road trip. The good news is that they accept walk-ins, which was amazing for us. I was surprised to see how many doctors work there and I think if I remember correctly, it was 13 or 14. Their pictures are on the wall. Our puppy was cared for by a very knowledgeable Vet . She examined and recommended probiotics for her which they had in stock. I was in and out of there in about an hour, which was amazing. One of the things that completely surprised me is that every single dog I saw in there was absolutely beautiful and show quality. I saw some of the cutest dogs I have ever seen all in one place. This place lures you in with an $81 exam fee then nickel and dimes you to death with "necessary" $170 blood tests until you leave spending $400. The whole time I was explaining my cat's symptoms to the vet she was just saying uh huh uh huh uh huh without even looking at me and kept saying uh huh uh huh even after I stopped talking. It was very obvious she wasn't listening to me at all. All I needed  was my cats simple allergy medicine prescription refilled and they refused to do that unless I paid for a $170 blood test. I ended up paying $217 for a skin scrape, exam & nail trim and they wouldn't even refill my cat's prescription after spending that. This place is no value at all and was one of the worst most uncaring vet experiences I have ever had. AVOID THIS PLACE as all they are about is money. Not a great value and have been scalded by their pricing and promises. I was overcharged for a two part shot that at other vets is a one part shot. Terrible customer service and I felt that they added things to the bill that were not discussed. Will not be going back. read more

The best clinic of what I could find in the greater Des Moines area. They don't upsell you on unnecessary tests, which saves the patient hundreds of dollars. We have Dr. Fara (female) and have found her to be exceptional. The exam cost of $32 is cheap considering everywhere else I checked was $100. read more

We love this Vet Clinic for so many reasons. Their clinic is a walk in service. We never have had to wait long to be seen. They are very kind to our pets. One of our dogs is older and can be a stinker. They never have said anything but loving things about this little guy. Most of all, when we have been out of town and my MIL had to bring our dog in, they were above kind to her and so helpful! Because of Value Vet we are able to afford 2 dogs and a cat. If you're in a pinch and need an affordable and quick walk-in visit, Value Vet is fine. However, I personally will be avoiding this place. TL;DR: If you have a large breed dog, Value Vet is not the place for you. In my experience, the staff do not seem to be concerned with the comfort of your pet; it's just get done what needs done. For reference, I am a behavior analyst and have studied dog behavior on the side. I don't know much about cat behavior, so I don't have much to say about feline patients. Inside, every dog is raging with anxiety, tail between the legs, panting, crying, whale eyes, pacing. I've also only ever seen smaller dogs there. Now, I have a 92-pound, military grade, working line German shepherd. He is well-mannered and good at communicating...in dog language. He has done great at every vet clinic he's visited, except this one, where they have a note in their system to muzzle him. For this last visit to Value Vet, I decided to stay in the room and see what could have gone wrong, as it is the only place that has a problem. Well, first, all of his communication attempts were ignored, and the doctor and tech both seemed very timid with him. They did nothing to build rapport with him, just built anxiety, dragging out the visit. At the end of today's visit, they had the audacity to tell me to work on his "behavioral issues." Until they get resources necessary and staff trained AND comfortable with calming techniques behavior management, I do not recommend this place to anyone whose dog is physically capable of doing damage. Every single dog there is reacting with yelps and growls and warning signals, but the staff seem comfortable with an animal that is small enough to restrain. read more

My 13 year old cat, Sweetheart, had been given an estimate by an Ankeny vet of $2000 for dental surgery. I was floored. That is outrageous. I had many recommendations to try Value Vet. I took him into meet Dr Liz (who owns Value Vet with her husband). They don't make appointments, you just go in and wait your turn. It's not fancy but it's clean and not overpriced. Dr Liz was absolutely fantastic! She is one of my all time favorite vets! We had our visit and got up to date on Sweets' shots. Then he came back for bloodwork and stool check. All of which went well and every staff member I met was helpful and kind. Then he had his surgery. He had 8 teeth removed and a mass that was in his mouth. It went to the lab and came back as not cancer, phew! The cost was less than half of what the other vet wanted. Can you believe it? WOW! Not only did I come out better financially but this is the first vet where he actually sat still for the exam. And I think I now have the best vet in town. I could not be happier with Value Vet. Value does not always mean cheap. Sometimes value means not getting ripped off by the mark ups that don't need to be there and being able to take care of your family properly.
