They have the best raisin bread in the entire world. They have the best onion rolls, and cranberry rolls available anywhere I know of. The onion roll goes great with a simple egg, or fresh turkey. While the cranberry roll, combine cream cheese, a bit of sugar and fresh butter, stir till smooth and put on a warm roll. Great way to start your morning with a cup of coffee. The chocolate croissants are perfectly made. Warm them up. The whole grain loaf is like nothing you've ever tasted. It is amazing. I could go on and on, but you get the idea. The aroma was strong and I knew I would love it toasted with butter and jam. She next suggested their dinner rolls, of which she bagged a dozen mixed grains, but only charged me for six. She knew what she wanted to sell while fresh, and which would have longer shelf life until the next day. I also grabbed a few large peanut butter cookies to sample later with coffee. Hearth Baker had no pastry, so I wasn't distracted by cakes, pies or other sweet possibilities. I didn't see those sandwiches mentioned by others, but anything stuffed between their bread/rolls would have to be great. What I did buy was excellent. The rye had a slightly sweet, yet grainy savoriness that was delicious, both fresh and toasted. Perfect for sandwiches or accompanying soup. The rolls were also quite good, with semolina and other light/dark flours to modify their flavors. Also terrific just sliced and buttered and ripped apart by my incisors. Those peanut butter cookies were also awesome. A little crisp on the edges, yet chewy toward the middle. Plenty of PB taste. After looking at the review, we decided to try it out. It's a nice venue - it was very quiet and had a relaxed vibe. We had recently gone to Hymie's Deli (Merion Station) and the noise level there was a little deafening. Several of the reviews on Pumpernick's mentioned the Challah French Toast...many quite favorably. We decided to order that and the Veggie Omelette, sharing each. I love Challah French Toast, I make it once a week. I perfected my recipe in college working at a breakfast-lunch restaurant near campus. It all starts with the challah - we had a bakery in Youngstown that made the lightest, fluffiest and tastiest challah. The owner insisted we use only butter in the pan when grilling the French Toast. It wasn't rocket science. Somehow, Pumpernick's missed the mark. It looked very appetizing when the dish arrived, but as soon as I tried to cut a piece, I immediately knew it wasn't 'light and fluffy'. Just the opposite - it was probably the 'heaviest' and dense French Toast I've had. It tasted good - was grilled perfectly - and after a few bites, the texture didn't seem 'so bad', but it was. As I said I make French Toast with challahs (once a week) from Rolings Bakery to Whole Foods to Famous 4th Deli, and it's never near as dense and thick as the French Toast at Pumpernick's. I would guess it's the challah, not the preparation of the French Toast - but I'm not sure. Which brings me to where the challah is from - I asked - it's from Jeff Solomon Inc, a bakery in Elkins Park, that's been in business about 30 years. Enough about the French Toast, let's talk about the Veggie Omelette, which was delicious! I routinely make omelettes, with vegetables, and this omelette was as tasty as any I've made. There were onions, orange peppers, mushrooms and tomatoes, and both my partner and I were surprised at how much flavor the veggies had! The omelette itself was light and fluffy; it was delightful! There were hash brown potatoes served with the omelette which were cooked perfectly - crispy exterior with a tender and great potato taste. There was a cinnamon raisin bagel that also came with the omelette which was very good. We enjoyed our breakfast notwithstanding the Challah French Toast - on our return - I'll try the pancakes.

Below are the results in order of worst to best. #5 Original South Philly Jewish Rye (available at Giant Food Markets) cost $6 for a full loaf. This was our least favorite. No flavor and the texture was completely off. The bread was very dry, almost stale. If you are short on time (and money), this will work but my recommendation is head to a deli and get some real NY Jewish Rye. #4 Ben & Irv's Deli in Southamptom cost $5.50 for a half loaf. The texture gets us closer to a true deli rye bread but still dry and light on flavor. #3 Moish and Itzy's in Newtown cost $6.00 for a half loaf. The crust is chewy as it should be and tasted great. The inside is a bit on the dry side. This was just a hair behind the #2 spot. Candidly I would rank this higher but my wife found the dryness unacceptable and I never win an argument with her. #2 Borscht Belt in Newtown cost $10 for a half loaf. This is a softer texture if that is your thing. My wife liked the texture but I like a chewier crust and heartier bread. I don't know that this bread will hold up to a mound of meat or wet toppings. The flavor was terrific. If you don't mind spending $10 for a half loaf of bread, then give it a try. I'm saving for retirement so probably won't return anytime soon. #1 [Top Spot] Manny's Famous Deli in Holland cost $4.50 for a half loaf. Winner winner chicken dinner. This is the fan favorite and a must try for anyone that values a good bread. Manny's offers the gold standard of ryes and at a price that leaves enough money to also buy a deli pickle.
