I received an email this morning from Amazon having a 1-Day sale of the exact shoe I've been eying that has been available at Dick's. I took the email (on my phone), and went to the store and asked the cashier right away if they would honor the discount Amazon was giving. She said that she didn't think they did so I asked if she would be so kind to double check with the manager (I'd like to help out a store in my area if I can). Mystery manager (who never came out from his hiding place), just radioed back to the cashier that they wouldn't honor the price. That's too bad. When I came home, I called another store and asked them if this was true and was told that it is company policy that they do not honor Amazon discounts but will honor other stores with barcode-scannable coupons. That's a shame. The store itself was clean and I was surprised they had as many people as they did in there at 10am on a Sunday but I'm not judging. I'll give them one more shot before I either make the trip out to the Algonquin store where I've had a bit better luck, or just buy it somewhere else altogether. I wanted to give the store a 2-star but since it's company policy to not honor Amazon prices, I marked it a 3-star.

Some friends and I recently took a trip to stay at a cabin in the Rockford area. We had planned to go cross country skiing and found that Rocktown Adventures rents xc skis in the winter. What we had not planned on was how slow we would be at finally leaving the cabin to go pick up the skis. Since they unfortunately don't do reservations for the skis, we called ahead to make sure they had some before heading over. By the time we got there it was already around 3 pm and unbeknownst to us, they close at 5 pm on the weekends. We got started with the rental process only to realize we would have very little time to ski before sundown. After explaining a couple options we had for still getting out on the skis, the staff member ultimately told us it probably wouldn't be worth our money given our time constraints. Instead of staying quiet, taking our money, and letting us have a very short ski trip, the staff member suggested the option that was best for us! He then told us that if we were ever back in town to just give them a call and if they had skis available he'd have them ready for us when we arrived. Not only is the staff knowledgeable and caring but they have an incredible selection of gear. We didn't end up spending any money there, and that is exactly why this was a five star experience!

Offshore of Lake Bluff has a solid selection of boats, and even in the off-season ( this visit is in January) there's decent variety in stock. Sam took me through the store and answered a ton of questions I had without pressure - selling. He's been boating since he was a tot and it's pretty clear that he loves his job as his eyes twinkled while he explained the ins and outs of different models of boats and gear. I was pleased to hear that while they have some boats in stock, they can usually order another if the one I want sells, since I should probably (I mean really) consider my income and savings situation before making a purchase. I will definitely be back when I know what I can afford. I am excited about getting out there in a boat I own instead of a rental. And I'll be proud to make a purchase here. It's always nice to support local businesses, especially if they provide excellent service, like they do here.

Dood has a right to be into his subject matter. Usually shops want you to feel comfortable and respected as somewhat of a priority, even if you aren't being directly pitched at the moment... it just was not a good vibe. All doods working there when I was in. Way heavy on the dood vibe. Captive audience syndrome. Sigh. Dood has to do what a dood does. I avoid places like this. Going to the bike collective in Rogers Park instead next time.

So much so that with this upside down world we all live in, we came back after an interview my husband had just to see the owners again. (Then of course fish a little ) Honor systems are not recognized any longer ... which is heartbreaking and sadly what life is that is 2020, and sadly even further back than this. Thank goodness there are still people, let alone owners of a business dealing with multiple personalities, with such a caring caliber as this couple. Those of you that don't take the time to understand what it takes to run a business that's been established as long as CJ's, the hours involved, the inventory, the back breaking physical labor to allot those of us that just love to fish, or simply be on the water, step back, breath, and take the time to smile and once in awhile, say.... I thought it was a park I had stopped at and I apologized, but she wasn't having it. She kept yelling, how could I possibly think this is a park!? I paid her to get her to leave me alone and she continued to berate me. I finally had to say, "I paid the $10, can you leave me alone now!?" The answer was no. I was honestly sorry I was trespassing and apologized, then paid. What more do you want from me? She's a first class jerk. Avoid this place like the plague. It gets even better. I posted this review while still sitting there. The lady apparently saw this and stormed out and started yelling at me again. She demanded my ID and told me she was going to call the police if I didn't remove the review. I told her that, no, I would not give her my ID and I also would not remove the review. I told her she is welcome to the call the police, I'm not breaking the law. She told me I'm trespassing. I then reminded her that I paid $10 for the privilege of sitting here and being berated. She said, "I'll give you the $10 back." She also pointed out that I don't have a license for my canoe. Later I looked this up and apparently you do actually need a license for a canoe so I guess I was breaking the law. I'm a bad ass. At this point her husband came out. He was initially confrontational but he quickly calmed down and helped calm down his wife. At this point I was packing anyway and just wanted to get the hell out of there. I never got my $10 back :)
