Located on Glades Road, this is the kind of store where you can walk in looking for one thing and end up discovering all kinds of products and ideas for enjoying the outdoors. REI carries an impressive selection of hiking and camping gear, backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, water bottles and hydration equipment, bicycles and cycling accessories, hiking and running shoes, outdoor clothing, travel gear, paddling equipment, and much more. They also carry their own REI Co-op and Co-op Cycles products, along with many well-known outdoor brands. (REI⁠) One thing that makes this location especially useful is the full-service bike shop. REI's trained bike-shop staff can help with bike maintenance and repairs, making the store more than simply a place to purchase equipment. The Boca Raton location also participates in REI's Re/Supply trade-in program, allowing members to trade eligible used outdoor gear for an REI electronic gift card. (REI⁠) A fascinating history What I find particularly interesting about REI is how humble its beginnings were. REI was founded in 1938 by 23 friends who loved climbing and the outdoors. The founders, Lloyd and Mary Anderson, were looking for a better and more affordable ice axe. They eventually arranged to import quality Austrian ice axes and share them with their fellow outdoor enthusiasts. The original REI wasn't a huge store at all. The first retail location was essentially a shelf in a cooperative grocery store, with the founders using their attic for storage. What began with 23 outdoor enthusiasts eventually grew into a cooperative with millions of members. (REI⁠) That history is still reflected in REI today. The company describes itself as a consumer cooperative whose purpose is to help people get outside, and its members remain an important part of the organization. (REI⁠) And then there's the return policy! Another interesting part of the REI experience is its 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. Currently, REI Co-op members generally have up to one year to return most items for a replacement or refund, while non-members generally have 90 days. The 9 year old did pretty much all of the fishing as the women just wanted to watch and get some sun. John helped him where he needed it and let him alone when he was doing fine. We brought in a ton of fish! 8 mahi mahi, 2 king mackeral and 2 wahoos. The boat was perfect for us. The issues we had were as follows: We booked a 3/4 day trip with an option to buy a full day--confirmed with Captain Karen weeks prior. We discussed with Captain Geno, the night before and morning of the charter, our goals for fishing. We wanted to target bigger fish farther out, we talked about bait options, location options, our experiences on a different charter the day before and where we hooked up on that trip. Despite our pleas, all we did were the same figure 8s inshore. After a half day with zero fish caught, they pulled up the gear, shrugged, and said "it's usually better". OK, and to be clear, I'm not dinging them for our not having caught fish--that's fishing. In his defense EVERY captain wants to put his boat and customers on the fish and I have no doubt their intentions were just that, but there was ZERO communication during the entire 4 hours. The first mate was on the fly bridge at least half the time. We saw the captain when we boarded and when the charter ended only. Nobody explained what they were doing to put us on the fish. We were provided no options and no communication until they pulled up the gear. We thought that was actually the first good sign and that with gear up and hours left we were steaming to a new location. But as we saw the inlet of the intracoastal in front of the bow we realized they were steaming to port. When I finally got the first mate to understand that we booked a 3/4 to full day charter and now most of the way home we decided it was best to just end the trip. Very frustrated and disappointed. With 3/4 or a full day as originally agreed, we would have felt better served if we rolled the dice offshore and even if we didn't hook up, they would have provided the type of charter we booked and discussed with them twice in advance. It was a lovely $800 boat ride...
