The guy was nice enough and when we arrived at our destination he said he only took cash. Well, we only had a card. He said that was fine but he'd have to call for approval. Good enough for me. The total was $52.20 and I signed the receipt and that was that. Today, while checking my account, I notice a charge for $62.20. I looked for my receipt and found it. YUP...I signed and wrote in $52.20 under his $52.20. So either it was a mistake or he gave himself a 20% tip. I called the company and explained the charge. He said he'd look it up and give me a call back. Honestly...I didn't expect a call back. Within 25 minutes I got a call back and he was VERY nice and said he credited my account for the extra $10. I asked the dispatcher if she could give me a fixed rate or minimally a quote: She wouldn't. For me, a woman coming from out of town, it did not give me the assurance I needed that, things would go well, if I couldn't be given the courtesy of a fixed rate or minimally, a quote up front. That lack of transparency was a big red flag. I crossed them off my list. I then called Coastal Cab and spoke with Adam, the dispatcher. I asked him for a fixed rate and he said, "Of course," and guaranteed the ride would cost $50 from the Del Cerro neighborhood to the airport. I made the reservation and called about 30 minutes before my pick-up time, just to ensure I was on their list for a ride at that time and he assured me I was and the driver showed up exactly at the requested time. The cab (a Prius) was clean and the driver (Jamal) was friendly, a good listener and most importantly, reliable and safe. It seems to me that it's rare these days to have such an experience of competence and ease with making arrangements with a new business, but Adam and Jamal made things seamless for me. I will absolutely call Coastal Cab in the future, next time I'm in San Diego and need a lift.
