We work full time, and two of the three of us don't live anywhere near the Antelope Valley. I called around and got quotes from a lot of non-emergency medical transport companies, and I was shocked by how impossibly expensive they are. All of them charge by the mile, and some have an outrageous minimum rate per hour - - on top of charging per mile - - and all kinds of fees (scheduling fee, pickup fee, etc.). A local round-trip would easily cost $400 or more each time,​ and it wouldn't be anything more than pickup and dropoff. Just insane.
