    The Davey Tree Expert Company

The Davey Tree Expert Company did it again. The snow on April 21 caused my beloved crab apple tree…read morein our front yard to collapse under the weight of the snow. Looking out my window and seeing the gorgeous blossoms of the tree sprawled on the grass made my heart sink. The tree sits outside my home office window, and I look at it everyday...and love how Davey Tree brought it back to robust health after it was infected with crab apple scab several years ago. I love this tree in every season. My first call was to Jackson, the arborist at Davey Tree with whom I have been working for several years. I was not surprised to learn that his day had already been booked solid with customer calls about fallen branches and trees. "But call the office," he told me. "Let's see what they can do for you." I called and spoke with Jordan. She told me that she had another arborist, Josh, who would come out by lunchtime. Josh arrived on time and inspected the tree. He said just what I thought he might say. "It's in pretty rough shape," he told me. It was. It had with broken branches that took down so much of the front part of the tree. I am sure he could read the crestfallen look on my face. "But we're going to see what we can do," he said. He had a plan. "Look, I can have a crew come out here tomorrow morning. I will come too. Together, we will talk about how to save this tree for you. We'll be here first thing." I wanted to hug him. He obviously saw that while the tree was in distress, so was its owner. He understood, and did not make me feel the least bit sorry for loving this tree so much. He heard me and he sincerely wanted to help. I appreciated that more than I could ever say. The next morning, Josh arrived, along with the crew in a large truck equipped with a hungry wood chipper. Josh met with the crew as they walked around the tree and inspected it thoroughly. They decided how to proceed. They would cut away the branches they absolutely could not save. Then, they would use tree rope to brace the lower branches that were still attached, but could probably not survive stiff winds without being anchored to some of the higher branches. In the end you can see in the photos below, how the tree looked before the snow, how it appeared right after the snow, and how Davey Tree saved my beloved crab apple tree by taking the time necessary to determine how it could be done given the damage it sustained. I went back to work in the office after they left, looked out my window at the beautiful blossoms still clinging to the branches...and privately whispered one last thank you to Davey Tree for giving me this priceless gift.

They brought down loads of healthy branches by the bunches and left the dead stuff. In the end they said that they didn't know they were supposed to get rid of the dead branches. It's beyond me why you would the dead branches anyway. So now they have to come out another day and do what they were supposed to do in the beginning. They obviously did not listen to instructions and did not use basic common sense. I would tell anyone to stay away from this company.

The owner came out this afternoon. He barely got to the gate at the back before he started telling me that they wouldn't do this work and we should call a landscaper. He then started walking toward the front of the house stretching his arms out as if trying to touch the neighbor's house and ours at the same time. I asked if they would still be able to service our other trees in August, as the receptionist said when we called. He just said "it's not a good fit for us", "you need to call a landscaper" and then something about not having openings till Sept. This guy seemed to NOT to want the work here. He didn't stand with me to discuss the whats and whys about what I should do next, he just kept saying that stuff as he walked to his vehicle. He stopped toward the end of the driveway to recommend a landscaper friend. That is all. He offered no info on why he really couldn't do any of the work for us. I would not recommend thus business because of the owner's own lack of communication. I believe he decided as soon as he got here that he wouldn't consider the job.

After using it on an area to add topsoil, the planted grass refused to grow, indicating a form of contamination. Crushed limestone for a gravel driveway had stones and pieces larger than expected. Delivery and personnel are fine. The company seems to have poor products. The prices are good, but you're better off paying more for better product. Plus, Doug Evans has been found guilty of multiple cases of fraud and EPA violations. Why do business with this man?

We've used Evans for mulch deliveries and other things and all-in-all been satisfied with the product. Last week, we had a delivery for 3 yards that was very clearly shorted. I said something to the driver and he didn't even stop walking to his truck to have a conversation or answer any questions. From there, I contacted Evans and asked what happened. The guy I spoke with was very nice and told me to e-mail them photos and they could "probably" get it corrected, which I did. In talking to him, he said that you should average about 10 wheelbarrows per delivered yard. The good news (at least for my estimating) is that we have a dumpster on-site that is a 2-yd dumpster. Took some measurements of the dumpster as well as our pile of mulch and they were, basically, identical. Going back to his point, we had ordered 3 yards and I wound up getting 20.5 wheelbarrows. You can do that math. In any event, I e-mailed them and never heard back. The product that showed up was good, but I'm not going to be ordering in the future based on getting 1/3 less than I ordered.
