Many times, those supply lists that are posted on school web sites and given to students the first day are not fulfilled completely by families and schools due to finances and budgets, so it was a welcomed surprise to receive an email from my school counselor about the Teacher's Aid Program, sponsored by the Houston Food Bank. I had never heard of the program before, but was curious about it. Since I live in close proximity to the area, I decided to sign up and see what I could find! Registration was a little picky initially...didn't recognize me or something like that for me to register. After a couple of hours, I received a confirmation email and was able to register for my day to shop--which by the way Saturdays are the best because everyone will probably still be at work during the weekday hours. There aren't many Saturdays available as well, so as soon as you see a date and time you like, you might want to register then and there. For some reason, I thought the Teacher's Aid Program Building was next door to the Houston Food Bank, which I have had the pleasuring of volunteering at. Being that I was running late and the registration confirmation stated "Please be on time," I knew my late arrival during the last time slot of the day wouldn't leave me with much to choose from--so I thought. Especially when I found out that the Teacher's Aid building was down the road and not at the Houston Food Bank site. The receptionist assured me that I would be fine with my late arrival. Since my school's name is attached to my registration, I didn't want to dampen it's reputation by being a no show. Worse case scenario, I would be marked as late arrival I hoped, but thank goodness the Teacher's Aid Program is not that stuffy and a stickler for punctuality! I arrived with my luggage bag and waited in line to be checked in, which requires one's id badge. A little hot outside in the afternoon, but if you want free things, a little sweat won't bother ya! Check in was a breeze and you're even given a hand held cart to carry items in as you shop. About four aisles of items are available for one to shop for and signs indicate how many of each item you can get. The essentials are here: paper, folders, writing and coloring instruments, binders, rulers, etc. Some office supply items were also available as well such as staplers, trays, pencil holders, and sticky note dispensers--just to name a few. When you get ready to check out though...YOU WILL WAIT! But regardless, the items are free! I can't complain. You have some conversation with some other educators, play games on your phone or check up on mail, make a phone call, or peruse the miscellaneous aisle (it's reminiscent of the candy aisle that calls your name at the grocery store) to pick over items that may be of no interest or are quite popular. Saw a lot of phone cases in this aisle--even one for iPhone 6! Printer toner--a high priced commodity maybe be found here. In fact, I was kicking myself that I saw ink for my printer I JUST recycled that same day to upgrade to a new one. I could have went a few more months without buying a printer if I had just waited another day and came here first. Darn my luck, but I definitely benefited in other ways by sacrificing a little time to check out the Teacher's Aid program. Great supply of essential items and hard to find items for free! Plus, the customer service is quite pleasant--even at the end of the operating hours. I arrived 10 minutes before 2 as one of the last people in line. At two, the doors close. I and the other customers who arrived after 1:30 were not pressured to shop quickly. We were helped and assisted and checked on. Additionally, I didn't even have to open my luggage bag which I had already organized neatly to fit all my items inside. The cashier just went down the shopping list and asked me if I had picked up certain items. Maybe that's how they do at the end of the day when they're trying to leave. Didn't bother me any--I didn't have to repack my luggage bag! A gentleman even opened the door for us customers as we left. Great experience that I believe one can replicate as many times as you want throughout the year as long as you register for the day. Once more, if you're looking for certain items (example: art teacher was looking for paint and painting supplies), you can leave your information with them to contact you if the items come available. Very nice! Houston Food Bank, you're A1 in my book!

This center has plenty of rooms/spaces for rent for different events. You can also vote here. But what I love is the variety of free daily activities that provide for people of all abilities. It's a great place for leisure and recreation and you get to meet others in the community. The staff is friendly and helpful, especially with the setups. There's also a walking trail outside and plenty of parking. They also have a resource wall full of information like events and assistance.

It seems like they are always holding some sort of event for the community - mainly for seniors. My recent experience here was to early vote in the 2020 Presidential election. The line was all the way out the door and down the sidewalk and across the parking lot as this was the first day of early voting. Parking was a bit tough to find and so I parked in the adjacent Metro Park and Ride lot. The inside of the building was immaculate. I could tell that the staff there takes great pride in keeping it clean and tidy. I was pleased with my experience at this community center and can't wait for all of the various programs to come back so that I may partake in them. Covid has really put a damper on things this year. Kudos to the individuals involved with the Kingwood Community Center and keep up the great work!

Asked if I could take some home rather than throw them away and they said no. Really wanted to dumpster dive later. But fast forward like 20 years and here I am again volunteering. This time in their repackage center. This was not like last time when we had to sort through donations. It was all assembly line packaging care boxes. They had a ton of volunteers there from different organizations on a Saturday. We were supposed to have a free breakfast, but there was none. So that kinda sucked. But they have a food court where you can buy stuff. They also have lockers for you to store things in. You are supposed to wear long pants or knee length shorts but I saw lots of folks with shorter shorts. Also closed toe shoes are supposedly required and this means no crocs specifically. but they didn't do inspections or say anything to anyone. Also they didn't ask for the minor waiver forms at check in. I think the warehouse wasn't air conditioned. Just one gigantic ceiling fan where we were so it started getting kind of hot. Lots of kids volunteering. Lots of church groups and schools. I think 6 years and above can volunteer.

I have had 3 of my children enrolled here since Sept. 2014 and it has largely been a positive experience. My oldest is in the PreK program and Ms. Gina is awesome! My twins are each in separate classrooms with Ms. Deena and Ms. Amanda and both are fantastic with the boys. All 3 enjoy their teachers and have made friends while there. They have learned a lot and the teachers and staff always do their best to accommodate changes (ie - potty training and other adjustments). Yes, there were a few staff changes but they worked quickly to correct any problematic teachers, and those teachers are no longer there. Also there was a time when we had a flat tire, and Ms. Kara (in the office) went the extra mile and sent a bus over to our house to pick up the kids and called a tow truck. Again, this was great service and I appreciated it very much. Their rates are more affordable than a lot of the local daycares and I shopped around before enrolling them. As a parent, if you are looking for a safe, loving environment for your kids, and one that is affordable, this school is a good fit.
