I miss the days of "Mom & Pop" radio stations, independently owned and free to dance to the beat of whatever drum solo they wanted. There were always a few creative geniuses behind the curtains, and the best marketing plan was the one with a huge shock factor. This was The End in the 90's. Passing through Charlotte towards college, I would see WEND's magical billboards with POT USA's lyrics: "Mud flowed up into Lump's Pajamas"- and knew I would do whatever it takes to work there one day. I graduated and worked there for six years. During my employment, Corporate America- in the form of Clear Channel Communications, came and bought Mom & Pop out. The differences were subtle at first, but the corporate conservative branding set in, and the results are what you hear today. The Weenie Roast was discontinued, morning shows ousted, but all changes the listeners forget after a bit. The air talent is still amazing, although it's hard to catch them with the more music, less talk initiative. Jack Daniel, who has been a key player for decades in Charlotte radio, (he gave John Boy & Billy their start in this town) was with The End at inception, and Rozak came soon after. Has WEND reached The End of their era, or is the New Rock Alternative music of today missing the edge of the 90's? I've debated over this many times, and unfortunately, find myself tuning to Lithium on Sirius much more than my beloved 106.5. I will always have a loyalty to the station that took me through my high school, college and early working years. I miss their unrestrained style and guerrilla marketing tactics that kept them a step above the sea of Charlotte radio, which is largely mass appeal. read more

The station was almost enjoyable 10 years ago. As time went by they really seemed to lose touch. They have had a tendency to seriously down grade their morning show (talent?) over the years. Each replacement show worse that the one prior. Their latest (Woody & Wilcox) are completely unbearable. Personally I can't stand to listen to them for more than five minutes. It is like they try way to hard to act like idiots. Morning shows really need to stop trying to be Howard Stern. Let's try something original shall we? I had the station on this morning after the morning show ended. Four songs in I had to change the station. They played one decent song, then the next three were not only obscure but down right bad. They are incredibly repetitive with the songs they play. They call themselves 'Charlotte's Alternative,' or 'New rock 106.5.' If this station would just focus on simply playing a variety good rock music and adopt a less talk and more music format, I'm sure their listener ship would increase. The previous review by Brian F. pretty much hit the nail on the head. The station has an annoying habit of announcing ridiculous things like, "A week from this Friday we are going to make a huge concert announcement!" And then continue to say that every half hour of every day until 'next Friday.' read more

This station used to be great in the mid 2000's when I first moved down here. Bob & Tom in the mornings and Kristin and Jack Daniel in the afternoon. I laughed all the time. It made going to work enjoyable and the drive home a great time. Then Kristin left. Then they dropped Bob & Tom and put two morons on in the morning who think they are hilarious. They are the only ones who laugh at their jokes. The music is crap now. If I wanted to listen to poppy alternative garbage I would turn on one of the several other poppy garbage stations in Charlotte. I listened to The End for the rock music. Now the only time I ever change it to 106.5 is when The Planet is on an extended commercial break. The End no longer serves any useful purpose and it's only a matter of time before the station shuts down completely. read more

This station used to play decent stuff. Every time I try them, it's Red Hot Chili Peppers. Bizarrely out of touch.

This station was great and all I would listen to...back in 2006. Now I can't stand it for three songs. Since the alternative format changed this station has sadly gone to crap. Rozak and Jack Daniel back in the old days were the best but now they have nobody cool. read more

Tamo is the most annoying DJ I've ever heard. I used to listen to this station but Tamo's voice is like finger nails on a chalk board. I'm going back to satellite radio myself. And just like that, I stopped listening to 106.5 The End. read more

This radio this station has become yet another corporate craphole of the iHeartRadio syndicate. No funny radio shows whatsoever no interesting music, they play the same six songs over and over again and it is not alternative rock. Play the same five or six Nirvana songs one Alice in Chains and just a dash of Soundgarden. The new announcer the female call girl is absolutely atrocious. Her overly stressed baby doll voice is pathetic and it actually is insulting every time I hear it so I change the station. They started to mix in the old announcer a little bit but we don't need to be told every song every song in a fake breathy voice. It gets annoying and feels like they're just trying to sell because obviously they are losing listeners rapidly. SiriusXM here I come. The only thing I listen to is Divakar and the Wiz on Sunday the only shows you have worth listening to. It is the end of The End. read more

I don't mind the music selection on this channel. I could even forgive the long and frequent commercial breaks. What absolutely kills me about this station is the terrible morning show. Woody and Wilcox are genuinely some of the most obnoxious people I've listened to. Their jokes are lame and unamusing. They can't seem to find a niche that works for them, straddling between teenager grade sexual humor and lifeless family friendly quips. It also doesn't help that they always make the female co-host the butt of their jokes even though she seems to be the only one with some sense and intelligence. I've been a listener of 106.5 for several years. I am a fan of different types of music, but I like rock the best. From my knowledge, it's the only major "alternative" station in the area, so I have to settle. There's 105.7 and a couple of years ago there was more of a hard rock station, but that's about it. I don't find most of the segments on 106.5 to be amusing or funny. In fact, I feel like the station would be better off without them. If you like classic alternative, then listen to the Wiz on Sunday's, he always delivers. And there's also a segment for local and regional indie music that's worth listening to as well. Besides that, the regular slew of songs played on the station lack variety. Oh, and good luck getting the song you requested to get on the radio. They've never played any of my requests.The station prides itself of being "new rock alternative" but half the playlist is 1990s grunge or pop-punk, or 2000's emo or indie or some overplayed song from 2013. It's not that I don't like that kind of music, it's just that I wish they paid attention to newer or lesser-known artists and bands, and not whatever lite "alt" rock band is trending. There's loads of good bands out there today making music, but they have yet to catch onto this. Another thing is that they only promote certain artists' tours, like Lana Del Rey. Since when is Lana alternative? Honestly, you're better off listening to the other rock stations in Charlotte or even something like Simon, which actually has variety. read more
