Nelson isn't the only war hero with a column. The Wellington Memorial in Liverpool was erected 1861-63 and is 132ft high, and forms part of the impressive Civic Centre alongside the Walker Art Gallery and St George's Hall.
The statue of Wellington is cast from bronze made from French cannon captured at Waterloo, and stands on a fluted Doric column made of Darley Dale Stone. The plinth has relief carvings of Wellington's famous battles. The sculptor was George Anderson Lawson, and it is a Grade II* Listed monument.
Close to its base is the Steble Fountain, also listed at Grade II*. Designed by Paul Lienard and unveiled in 1879, it was a gift to Liverpool from Colonel R. F. Steble who was Mayor in 1874-5. Made of cast iron with bronze fittings, the fountain centrepiece features marine animals and was made for the Paris Exposition in 1867. The original casting is now in front of Massachusetts State House in Boston; others are in Lyons, Geneva and Bordeaux. read more
