When I found out that my 82 year old father had to be admitted to a care center to recuperate from a recent hospitalization, I was extremely worried about the quality of care he would receive. From the day we went over his care plan until the day he was released from South Pasadena Care Center 3 months later, he received excellent care. The staff is friendly and they treat their patients with respect. My father developed friendships with several of the staff members who took a genuine interest in getting to know him and help him recover his health. His nurses made sure that he received his medications as prescribed, that he was groomed and kept clean, and that he was well fed according to his doctor's orders. If they noticed a problem with his health, they were quick to address the issue and intervene to make things right. His occupational and physical therapists worked with him regularly to help him regain his strength and balance so that he could return home. When it was time for him to return home, they made sure that I knew how to handle his catheter and properly deliver his medication. They also ensured that he would receive home health support as needed. I will be forever grateful to the staff at South Pasadena Care Center for helping my father with his recovery and for doing so with such kindness and professionalism. It is my hope that my father never has need of such care again, but I would not hesitate at all to have him there or to recommend this facility to anyone who finds a family member in the same situation.

A significant, and common, part of her hospice care would entail administering meds, and we inquired about this directly over the phone. We were assured that this was a service that Home Instead provided, and we moved forward with scheduling an in-home assessment. At the appointment, the service professional said that they, in fact, do not administer meds. I would have hoped that an agency that provides care during such vulnerable times would be direct and sensitive in answering questions related to caregiving before moving forward with services. The misleading information presented to us over the phone has resulted in wasted time and further delays in securing care for my grandmother. I sincerely hope that this review is considered and practices are refined to better inform potential clients, holding more respect and awareness of the stress, time, and emotional energy required to secure care at end of life. This could have been avoided had our direct questions over the phone been answered accurately. The unnecessary time spent at the at home assessment would have been better used enjoying the precious moments remaining with my grandmother.

I was also worrisome for my dad about the care he would receive and felt guilty that I could not provide the care he needed 24/7. But was surprised, relieved and glad at how receptive they were to our suggestions and concerns. After understanding the processes in place, I was content in knowing my dad was being cared for by staff that took the time to listen and get to know him and the family. They were very patient and tolerant with us. As we had many questions and were being helicopter daughters. They truly catered to his needs and provided the care and specialized food he needed to be safe and well cared for. Got there Monday PM and I brought a Bag of my medication from My Dr. At Huntington Hospital. I'm 56 yrs old & very AWARE of the lack of assistance & staff was very rede & I wasn't taking the BS!!! They Lost my bag of :antibiotics, a new muscle relaxer, & hydrocodone pain meds. I only lasted 4& half days. I Was refused a shower!!! Had only 2 showers while there. The Friday that I checked out I demanded my bag of new medicine & it took several Staff members an hour & half to finally locate the meds before I was discharged. I reported numerous Issues to the Nursing director while I was there (wheeled myself thru hall). Also Alerted the Administrators. I Was so happy to leave. .

I was put in a shared room with a lovely lady easily into her 80's . I tried to make the best of my 10 days here however I was treated as if I was an 80 year old patient. I was constantly awoken to have my vital signs taken at all hours of the night, injections that left several bruising on my stomach and medication to make sure I had regular bowel movements, I never took those pills, I would spit them out of my mouth as soon as the nurse walked away and still had regular bowel release. I felt like I was in the movie one flew over the cuckoos nest. Every 3 days was shower day, where they would bring in a chair made out of pvc piping and I would be wheeled into a wall to wall tile shower room. Their was only one soap to wash your hair, face and body. Once you where done, they would drape me with bedsheets to return me to my bed. I haven't even gotten to worse part of my room. We had 1 bathroom that the moment you turned on the light their would be an annoying humming sound, their was no windows in the "restroom" and the lighting was that type that would give me anxiety, that I was required to share by two rooms and 4 people. It was absolutely ridiculous and disgusting to enter and see their urine and crap on the seat. We where provided with wipes to clean ourselves but I primarily used them to clean the toilet seat, their was even a bathroom leak so unfortunately since my legs weren't working so well I would unfortunately step into leaking toilet water. The wipes where often used to clean my feet and luckily I had brought my own sanitizer and would clean my feet, I would request socks and would get a pair a day later, apparently their was a shortage of socks for us patients. I once held my bladder for 20 minutes waiting for some woman in the other room to get out of the restroom as I heard her go through her repeated ocd routine. I hardly ever pushed the assistant button but I was about to urinate on myself so I pushed for the help button to ask where else I could use a restroom and no one came to my aid. I finally had to be "that person " and started banging on the door for her to get out!! I did try to find some positive things from the facility and I convinced myself that the highlight of my bed by the window was a treat until it rained and our room was completely flooded with rain water, so their I was with my sweet little old lady roommate awoken at 3am to have the room wet vacuumed. And finally the final straw, the day before I was meant to be released I by chance had a fever, and since the was at the brink of the beginning of the CoronaV they panicked. They quickly removed my sweet little friend out of her bed against her will, made the room a quarantine room. I was inserted with a catheter and a IV. I had previously had an appointment outside the facility and they started to blame my nephew for giving me CoronaV. I was F this crap, I got in a verbal argument with the main facility social worker who looked for anyone to blame for me bringing this virus in. As they awaited for an ambulance to take me to Kaiser hospital to be admitted, I could hear the nurses outside saying I don't want to go in her room, please come get me in 5 minutes for any excuse. I packed all my belongings so my husband could pick them up since I knew I wasn't returning myself. Once I was admitted to the CoronaV section of Kaiser hospital, the cause of my high fever was all due to a bladder infection and I was completely negative of CoronaV. I was livid I had to spend another five days away from my son and husband completely isolated, by this point I had been in health facilities for a month and just desperately wanted to go home and start healing even more so from my spinal cord surgery. I won't even get into the "food" I hardly ate. I basically lived off a coffee a day and whatever pastry I got. The only one positive thing I could say was the CNA's seemed to be the only ones who cared for the needs of the patients. I wouldn't wish any family to put their loved ones into this hell hole.

They told me everything would fit my needs perfectly -- but the person they sent was nothing like what was described. The aide showed up acting like I worked for her. She said my building ​ "wouldn't work" because of her sinus problems, I received what I felt like was a hostile exchange when she just first arrives first it was my building wasn't good enough and then she went in to say that she had tons of experience in the supervisor and immediately started dictating how things would be random Sunday ​, and even insisted I had to change grocery stores -- even though Grace had already approved the store I use and confirmed it with the owners. She claimed she was a supervisor and acted like I had to follow her rules, not the other way around. There was no "How can we support you?" It was "This is how it's going to be." And when I said no, the attitude turned hostile, as if I was doing something wrong for expecting basic respect in my own home. A home health aide is supposed to help me, support me, and follow my home rules when there's no safety issue. Instead, Grace Home Care left me stressed, anxious, and without services for nearly a month. Based on this experience, I would not recommend this company to anyone.
