Hill Construction

In 2019 we hired Jeremy Hill's company, Hill Construction to demo our old cabin and build a new…read moreone. Our experience with Hill Construction was a very poor one with many, many issues that involved me needing to ultimately manage the project even though we had paid them to do the project management. Jeremy Hill encourages his workers to cut corners (per workers who were on our project) and we had many issues throughout our project as a result of the poor project management we received at Hill Construction. Here is a list of issues and concerns that occurred over the course of building our cabin with Hill Construction: The most concerning thing that happened during our build is on our very first weekend in our brand new cabin, we had a flood in the basement due to Hill Construction not properly installing our egress window. This led to all of the flooring and part of the walls being completely ripped out and needing to be re-done. To this day there is still damage to some walls which Jeremy Hill refuses to fix. When his workers came out to fix the egress window and dig it out properly, he said that Jeremy had been told it needed to be done differently and he told them it was fine as was. When Corey (our first project manager) left Hill Construction, Eric jumped into our project with no background and missing tons of info. I had to go back through every decision I made 1-2 times due to this and it was very time consuming and frustrating. Even in spite of doing this, many errors were made over the course of our project. Corey had shared he gave 2 weeks notice but Jeremy Hill cut him immediately instead of allowing the proper transfer of knowledge to occur. Eric, our project manager, and Jeremy Hill the company owner promised to cover the flooring once it was installed. I came up a week after flooring had been installed and they were not covered and had hundreds of pounds of trim and doors sitting directly on the floors. When I confronted the onsite foreman, Don, for the project, he told me Eric was supposed to have the covered there and took no responsibility for what happened. The floors were damaged by them not being properly covered. The trim was originally mis-installed and had to be re-installed correctly when I came up one day to see it had not been installed per my communicated install preference. I had to facilitate the entire flooring installation because Eric was unable to communicate with them. He called them multiple times swearing and upset it was told to me and lied 3 times that I have documented both to me and to NW Interiors who installed our flooring. Greg, me and Don pointed out a gas smell a month prior to Jeremy coming out for the gas smell and Eric shook it off saying it was a vent. We used 15% of a tank of propane in 1 week due to this, so we would like to be compensated for that since his lack of follow up led to that issue and expense. These requests were completely ignored. For the nose trim-- When Eric and I met with the flooring people and they said it was normally done with the trim. Eric agreed and said Hill Construction would do it. He proceeded to install a very soft cedar wood. When the first damage happened to the cedar stair nose, Eric said "that is what we always use and it will be fine". Eric gave us Hill Construction's word that he would give us a 5 year warranty but then Jeremy Hill told us he had no authority to give us a 5 year warranty. After a lot of dispute, they did replace the stair nose but in the process damaged the wall and to this day refuses to fix the wall per our requests. On the railing, I never picked cedar and to me it seems it should have been done to match the trim, in pine. Jeremy Hill promised us when selling us on building with him that we would get design assistance but we never received any design or selection assistance at all while making selections for our building process. The sink was not installed when counter people came. Then the sink didn't fit and we had to pay extra for the counter people to come back out, plus we had to pay extra to return and exchange the sink we had. We wanted our ceiling to be knockdown but instead we got flat. Most recently Jeremy Hill sent someone out to repair nail pops who was not a professional painter. The worker made the walls look horrible and Jeremy refuses to send someone to properly fix nail pops leaving us with damaged and walls looking worse than before his worker came here. During that visit, the worker also damaged a door and had to take it back to fix which took Hill Construction 2 months to return to our home. We still have some HVAC concerns Jeremy never addressed, nail pops needing repair per the contract and we are requesting some compensation for project management due to the time consumed with managing a project we had paid to be fixed. In my last communication with Jeremy Hill he said everything not resolved is in "normal condition" saying "This concludes our business relationship."

The team at Hill Construction was fantastic to work with on our cabin re-build. Our site was…read morechallenging and they had the knowledge and expertise to make it all happen. Thanks to Jeremy, Scott, Eric, Sue, Carrie and Bobby for all their hard work. The craftmanship of their team was outstanding. When an issue arose- which is inevitable- Eric was always calm and able to find a solution that worked for us; I always felt that he was on our side. We are beyond ecstatic with our new place and couldn't be more pleased with the experience we had with them!

When the installer did show up, he only had enough carpet for the upstairs and master bedroom. This was a Tuesday. We were told the carpet missed the shipment and would be in on Thursday but no one was available to install it until the following Monday. Monday comes and the installer comes but does not have enough of the carpet so we have to wait another four days to get the last two stairs and landing installed. I voiced my frustration with the Wausau manager and told him that they were losing customers from all of this and he said quote "that really makes me want to bend over backwards for you when you're throwing that at me." Being a manager, I assumed he was being genuine but was quickly told by himself that he was being sarcastic. Very inappropriate customer service skills for management. Price was great. Installation was great. Management is terrible, so hopefully you don't need to speak with them. I did speak with corporate about this manager and they were extremely helpful. It just shouldn't have gotten that far.
