Good and friendly people. Cliff and the post office and Zach at the service desk are great.

NEVER EVER do they have enough registers open. It doesn't matter what time of day you go either. The self check outs have constant problems.

I have heard my family talk about Wegman's for years but this was the first time I was in town and…read morewent for myself. I found it to be quite a good store, with everything you could want: my weird health-food desires like coconut flour and buckwheat groats (that I usually have to visit specialty stores for); pharmacy supplies; lots of pre-made food; diverse international offerings; plenty of organic and pre-cut produce; flowers, etc. Despite it being my first time, I was able to navigate it without too much difficulty. When they were out of green onions, a friendly worker was able to refill the bin quickly for me (and direct me to the spacious, clean bathrooms). They have tons of checkout lines, only a couple were open with humans; and they have lots of self-checkout too. I mean, it's just a grocery store, but it's a pretty good one!

Being able to pick up my (large) bakery order and not leaving someone disappointed at home makes me happy. Had my list of must haves. I meandered through all the departments. Wasn't on a time schedule. I spent 2 hours in the store. Found beautiful baby lamb chops. Filets were $6/lb cheaper than my grocery store. Bought beautiful endive. Had to bring home the red wine peppered salami. Coming home, opening the cooler, and handing out foodie presents is like Christmas morning. The oohs and aahs were heard at multiple houses. The staff were very helpful finding my treasures. Wegmans trips make traveling for business worth it.

Walmart and Wegmans are their own categories so it really comes down to Weis and Giant for the affordable grocery store option. Giant seems to have a great selection of good foods, things that maybe another store doesn't have. They have a great produce section and nice deli. I've gotten some great deals on family packs of raw meat (chicken and beef so far) so I love that and will definitely go back for their sales. The deli has a fun selection of cheeses and dips, great resource for parties. The staff is generally friendly but were a little bit inattentive when I asked for some help at the customer service desk. They helped me but were distracted talking to each other and just kind of walked away without saying anything once they helped me. Odd. Overall a nice grocery store with good weekly deals. It's clean, mostly friendly staff, you can earn gas points (not sure yet how significantly they help), and it's convenient to get to. Oh, and there's a robot rolling around the store. I haven't quite figured out what it's there for but don't let it scare you.

However when I went to check out there were no cashiers working. The lines for self service checkout were backed up and the young man who was in charge of them was doing a great job but was going crazy! When I asked why no cashiers I was told they all called off. Not sure what happened or why no managers stepped in but it was not good.

This downtown location is in a very…read moreconvenient location and has pretty much everything you could possibly need at a convenience store. Really gigantic! We needed some beers to go on the way to the annual white out football game and were able to score a couple pounders for six dollars. Pretty reasonable if you ask me. There is a separate register for beer and wine sales so make sure you head there. We didn't shop or order any food here, but those are good options for those in need.

Mclanahans is still far from perfect so I'm really rounding up for 4.5 stars, but considering what it's surrounded by in State College, it's definitely closer to the 5! Grocery and deli: I think I've only purchased minor groceries here and don't rely on it solely for food due to the cost markup but it sure is convenient! They have a nice variety of household items and groceries and alcohol so it's nice to have that so close to home or work for folks. The deli I've only recently started going to but have greatly enjoyed their daily specials (meatball Mondays and their Sunday Turkey and Gouda sandwich). They use Boars Head meat, of which I'm a huge fan and struggle to find at other places up north. A's Pub: this little pub up at the front of the building is my favorite indoor place to drink in the entire town and if it's not crowded it really is one of my favorite places I've ever been for drinks! The setup is self serve taps- you prepay on a special card and then take that card up and pay for the pour, however much you decide to pour. This is great for folks who just want to taste test, or don't want a full glass at all. They have beer, a seltzer (usually), local wines, and more recently have added a local craft cocktail on tap as well. They've also expanded to have a walk up cocktail bar (not on tap, made to order) that I have yet to try but they certainly will have something for everyone. Not into alcohol? The grocery side has a plethora of bottled beverages (including new health craze drinks like kombucha and special probiotic sodas) to choose from, as well as snacks and sandwiches, all of which you can bring into the bar area and enjoy. During weekdays this area is pretty empty and a great place to eat a quick lunch. Evenings, especially Friday and Saturday, the place fills up for happy hour (an incredible deal, 1/2 off draft prices, meaning you can get a pint of beer for $1+). They often have live music on Fridays and I will say I'm not a fan- the space is too small and the loud music plus the clamoring of college students is too much for my ear drums so I prefer to go not on Fridays. Otherwise their happy hours are a blast and they have a good sized space for groups. I am going to miss Mclanahans very much when we move, so if you are in town give it a try and toast to Abi O!

That's not so with this International Market in State College! They had a plethora of Mediterranean, South American, Asian, and European products. Another great thing is it is somewhat organized by region, so you don't find random things next to each other. The store is located in an old house so you go from room to room while shopping. It can feel a little bit cramped but I was surprised by the amount of products they sell. There are lots of refrigerator and freezer goods too. The prices seem high for American groceries but as far as I can tell they are typical for an international market. I'd suggest reading other reviews and checking expiration dates. I'm new in town and have only been once but I understand they may not have high turnover for some products that may end up past their expiration. Just use your brain. Not sure if they take cards- I always assume there's a card minimum or that they don't take card so keep cash on hand. The only disappointing thing was their fresh produce. It was the size of a cocktail table and had about 6 items total. I'm sure there are other shops in town with better produce selection but as far as cultural variety, I'd say this International Market takes the cake.

Some places are worth building an entire adventure around. Penn State Berkey Creamery is one of…read morethem. As fate would have it, my Adventure Buddy and I found ourselves in State College on National Ice Cream Day, and there was absolutely no way I was leaving town without finally visiting the home of my favorite ice cream flavor ever...Monkey Business (banana ice cream, peanut butter swirl, chocolate chips). I'd fallen in love with Monkey Business last summer after trying it at an ice cream shop close to my house, but somehow I'd never actually made it to the Creamery itself. Correcting that oversight immediately became part of the day's adventure plan! We arrived around 12:30 on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, fully expecting National Ice Cream Day to mean complete chaos. Surprisingly, it wasn't. Busy? Absolutely. But the line moved quickly, everyone seemed to know exactly what they were doing and the whole operation ran like a well-oiled ice cream machine. Then I looked around. Cheese. Sticky buns. Chocolate milk. Bagels. Ice cream. Ice cream. More ice cream. At one point I turned to my Adventure Buddy and said..."I could live here." Ordering couldn't have been easier. First, you tell the cashier whether you're getting a cone, bowl or shake and pay. Then you move down to the ice cream counter, where you pick your flavor. Finally...you wait for your number to be called so someone can hand you what can only be described as an absurdly generous serving of happiness. While I waited, I sampled the Grilled Stickies flavor. Big mistake! It was phenomenal! For approximately fifteen seconds, I seriously considered abandoning my beloved Monkey Business and trying something new. Fortunately...I came to my senses. Monkey Business and I have history together. When my number was called, the gentleman behind the counter handed me a bowl that was significantly larger than I expected. And yes...I audibly squealed. Again. Right there in the middle of the Creamery. I looked at him and said, "You absolutely made my day!" Because he had. We found a table outside on the patio to enjoy the beautiful weather, performed a few completely necessary happy food dances and proceeded to enjoy every glorious bite of what is still, without question, my favorite ice cream flavor on Earth. For only $6. On National Ice Cream Day. Honestly, I don't know how that day could've gotten any better. PRO TIP: Don't skip the sample spoon! There are so many incredible flavors that it's worth trying something new before committing. Just be warned...you may accidentally discover another favorite! I also learned that Berkey Creamery ships ice cream to the lower 48 states. This information feels...dangerous. Living only about an hour and a half away, I probably don't need to have Monkey Business shipped directly to my house. But...I may have to test the process someday. You know...in the name of science! If you're anywhere near State College, do yourself a favor and make the stop. Whether you're a Penn State fan, an ice cream enthusiast or just someone who appreciates an exceptionally well-run small operation, Berkey Creamery absolutely lives up to its legendary reputation. WE ARE...ICE CREAM HEAVEN!
