I've been telling people how great the Symphony was this past weekend. While doing so, I try to…read moreavoid words like "oftly" that could potentially allow for my rants to sound snooty. But deep inside my attendance did make me feel like I'd gained a little bit of high-class culture. The conductor was so awesome. He was fun to watch and I enjoyed his almost epileptic rhythms as he directed the musicians. Some of the musicians themselves were very moving. Literally! Some of them moved a great deal as they played and some sat very still. It made me wonder how I would play the instruments, if I knew how, while performing in front of a full house such as the one Saturday night! I'd probably move around a lot! Really get into it. The pieces they selected were beautiful and very well-played. Mr. Amy S. enjoyed the opera singers that came out during the second half much more than the music by itself we heard for the first hour. I liked both. It was really a wonderful experience, but probably not one I would have appreciated much before this year. Definitely not a place for children. On that note, we were probably the youngest couple there.

I would have driven all the way to you just to turn around and leave because of your fee that wasn't disclosed upfront. Most local studios and private teachers I have found to offer an initial lesson for free to see if it is a good fit. If that's is not the case with you it would be a much better business practice to be a little more upfront in the future. It feels incredibly dishonest.

Then, life got in the way of my passion, and I put my needs and love of singing aside to take care of life's business. In December of 2013, I reached a very high stress point in both my personal and professional life (lots of stuff going on that was totally out of my control), and I desperately needed to do something just for me. I needed stress relief, fun, an escape and to do something that brought me joy. I really wanted to get back into singing, but wasn't sure how. I knew I didn't want to join a church choir because I am not religious, and I didn't want to take a formal singing class again at a college, because I just didn't need the stress. I just wanted to sing and have fun. I searched online for fun-sounding chorus's, and found this one. I was really nervous about going because it had been so long since I had sung anything, and of course, I didn't know anyone there. However, I was determined, and I hesitantly went to a few rehearsals, and tried to blend in and not call attention to myself. I was really impressed by the positive energy, the non-judgmental feel, and the overall welcome feeling I got. The singing was secondary at that point because I didn't know any of the songs, and I was still really nervous. I was encouraged to do a formal rehearsal, so I finally did it at week 4, and I was accepted immediately the same night in Jan of 2014. Ever since then, I have been growing, evolving, coming out of my shell, getting over my stage fright, making new friends, learning the songs, and having an absolute blast. I didn't know anything about Barbershop singing until I joined. Let me tell you, if you're going to sing, Barbershop is the way to do it! I have found my love of singing again. I have found me again. I have re-awakened my inner passion for music and harmony and ringing overtones. I go to rehearsals, and belt out the songs with all the energy and love I have. I have fun. I sing. I laugh. I went to see a Beatles cover band, there was so much security there, it made me wonder why? The…read moreaverage age of our party was 66 years old (5 people). I'm guessing that they think we can get pretty rowdy? I especially didn't like being interrogated for what was in my purse, and I was also patted down! I have been to this area of Santa Rosa, and don't think of it being a high crime area. The sound was wonderful, but the lighting was average, often they would light up a band member that wasn't singing or playing, but it was much better than most places. We had a table, and got food, but the food was just average and there was beer and wine (average also). We may attend another show there, but hoping they will be mindful of the overkill security for the age groups that the band draws, and hope if they do keep the high security, they train them to not be rude to people, when entering the venue.

It was a great show and marked the first time that a Broadway Show was performed instead of a mixed number of show songs and dance. If you are thinking of attending, the venue at Jack London State Park is one of a kind. If you want to picnic before the show there are several excellent Food Trucks, Wine Tables and picnic tables to sit and enjoy. Don't forget to bring a warm jacket as it can get cols once the sun sets. There is really nothing I would change, it is a first class show in a beautiful historic setting.

I was totally happy with the Avalon players' "Sonoma Shakespeare"…read more My two "more local" Summer Shakespeare festivals have (sadly!!! sniff sniff..) disappeared over the past few years so I talked my friends into driving to Sonoma in the heat to see Sonoma Shakespeare's "As You Like It".... And lucked out. This is summer amateur theater at its best thanks to: mostly good actors (and one great one: Aaron Bremner in the role of Orlando....); a beautiful setting (Buena Vista winery replete with picnic tables in the shade); great balmy evening; lively audience; a perfect "period" setting; Kate Kennedy's lively interpretation of the play that included some very funny ad-libbing; sing-along songs ("let it be"(?), Allelujah, stuff like that....); actors borrowing glasses of wine off our tables. Merry Mild Mayhem... Sure there were flaws: actors not on mics so couldn't hear everything they said; action takes place 'in the round' all around the fountain so couldn't see everything either. But I didn't care! Although my friend (and I) sorely missed what we loved about the brilliant "Shakespeare at the Cannery" (which had its last season in Santa Rosa in 2018), I was perfectly happy with the Avalon players' "Sonoma Shakespeare". I want people to know about it! I assume they will perform again next year?
