Again, I enjoy my visits to Sam's Quik Shop, amazing as it is, but the HV Bottle Shop is... well... simpler. More refined, if you will. If Sam's is the popular tattooed front man of everybody's favorite, gruff-voiced punk rock band, the Bottle Shop is that tattooed guy's older cousin - he still bears the tattoos of younger years, and grins when he hears the music, but honestly, sometimes the scene kids and late hours just get to be too much. He'd much rather sit around in a quieter setting these days, talking with and meeting new friends while he introduces them to this really amazing new Belgian seasonal he discovered. Oh, and if you're wine person, he undoubtedly has an excellent recommendation, too. Now, the fellow who runs things here doesn't have tattoos. No visible ones, anyway. But, he's wise in the ways of fermented wonder, friendly, patient, and very open to engaging you directly to make recommendations or give you information about anything you want to know about. He's friendly with my girls when they have to run in with me to snag a bottle of Framboise Lambic for Mommy's Christmas stocking, and I keep finding myself here again. And again. And again. Check out HV Bottle Shop. You won't be disappointed.

This shop is under new ownership, who is by and large absent…read more I was shocked by how unwelcoming the new management is. This is a neighborhood wine shop. My husband really liked chatting with the last owner, who knew a lot about wine. He had not been since the new owner took over. I convinced him to go for a tasting, and I'm so sorry I dragged him in there on his weekend time. We were the only people tasting at the bar. Despite this the managers showed zero interest in us. It was very awkward. They asked no questions, not even how long we'd been going there. Management actively avoided us. No one wanted to talk beyond shelling out basic wine info on what they were trying to sell at the tasting. When we stepped away from the counter to look around after the tasting, they suddenly gathered with one another behind the counter to talk among themselves, leaving me somewhat confused and left to peruse the shelves alone (we were the only ones there looking at wine too) instead of taking any opportunity to approach us, get to know us, and retain local clients and entice us to want come in more often. All 4 seats were empty at the counter around them. It was a weekend night. Had I felt more hospitality, we might have bought a nice bottle of wine and sat down to talk. Instead we left. My husband just shrugged (he likes Wine Authorities anyhow) but I actually felt somewhat shocked, in all honesty. It's hard to believe they're trying to run a hospitality business. That experience was anything but fun. In fact it was stressful and a disappointing waste of time. If they want to justify their higher prices over other stores, or encourage people to drink on premises, they need much better management. Preferably people who like people. We had every intention of supporting this local business, but won't be returning anytime soon.

There is no liquor sold outside of state owned liquor stores here in NC. This leaves a sad hole in a part of the business that does well in other states. They have a very good wide selection, but I have an aversion to being pushed towards their corporately endorsed products. Those wines are fine but the ones I'm actually looking for are generally better and I don't like to spend time being pitched the wine that they want me to buy . They have a very good beer section. Plenty of stuff you probably never even heard of before and worth trying. They have a solid selection of cigars, kept in a good improper walk-in humidor. I find their snacks and cocktail accoutrements lacking. I buy them, but I'm usually left with the taste of mediocrity in my mouth. The service is very good. Their online presence and interactive website is wonderful. However, when I call on the phone, it's a hit or miss as to whether I will getan employee I feel is interested in serving my needs.

I told her that all I really needed was to make change. She said "we don't have that" rather dismissively. I was floored. I looked around at this massive store, the cash register's, the staff the millions worth of inventory and I said "really, with all this? And she said " really, with all this". I left the store with no change. The bus didn't make change. The driver let me on for free. There is a total wine in the town where I live, but I don't think I'll be going back there.

My wife and I are fans of this ABC Store located in Meadowmont Village, just off 54 in Chapel Hill…read more It's clean, feels safe, and the customer service has been good on our two visits so far. This ABC Store is small compared to others, but it's had what we've wanted. My wife picked up some tequila for margaritas and I got part of my groomsmen gifts here. I think the same guy helped us both times. For the gifts, shortly after we entered, he asked us if he could help us look for anything. After telling him that I was looking for bourbon to gift to my groomsmen, he immediately had something in mind and walked us down to the shelf where bottles of Jack Daniel's Gentleman Jack Double Mellowed Tennessee Whiskey sat. He said it was nice bourbon and that was good enough for me. I trusted his opinion. He sounded genuine and he's the expert, not me. We grabbed six 375 mL bottles at $18.95 each. After 7% North Carolina state tax, my total rang up to $121.66. The bottles looked nice and I thought they were an ideal gift. The employee got us a box to transport the whiskey. They reuse empty beverage boxes for this purpose, like the boxes at Costco. He got me a Suntory Whisky box that fit all six bottles perfectly. They're strict about IDs here. First thing after we entered, we were asked if we were both at least 21 and had IDs. You can't make a purchase here unless everyone in your party is at least 21 and has identification to prove it. My wife and I are from Georgia (where ABC isn't even a thing, BTW). Before ringing us up, the employee scanned the code(s) on the back of our Georgia driver's licenses. Surprisingly, in over 20 years, that was the first time I'd ever seen that done. This is one of three ABC Stores in Chapel Hill. The other two locations are at 251 Perkins Drive and 1724 Fordham Boulevard. These are part of the Orange County ABC Store network that includes eight locations total. The other Orange County locations are in Carrboro, Eno, Hillsborough, and Mebane.
