This marks my 500th review! BOOM!…read more While entertaining some visiting friends, we decided we were going to take the city site seeing bus that goes around Glasgow. One of it's stops is right outside Glickman's and seeing as this is a Glasgow institution, we decided to hop off to check it out. Looks are very deceiving with this place, as the outside looks massive. We were all super excited to see what delights awaited us behind the doors, but before we went in, we took a look at all the stuff they had displayed in the the windows. Lots of Irn Bru collectibles, lots of old style candy jars and containers. They also had a selection of what candies they had for sale on the inside of the shop. My guy was super excited that he saw a particular sweetie his Gran used to give him as a child. We opened the doors to the shop and to our surprise, the shop itself was about the size of a hall cupboard. Ok, maybe the size of two, but it was tiny nonetheless. There were two people already in the shop and with the four of us walking in, it made for a tight squeeze. My guy bought a bag of sweeties and we were off just like that. I was really hoping for more of a store, but I'm assuming whatever candies they may have made on sight in the past, maybe that extra room was used to make stuff. Who knows. Great wee shop for bringing back old memories, but not a huge shop to look around in.

Goody gum drops, I like Glickman's…read more Glickman's is right by the Barras, so if you're feeling tired after a hard day of bargain hunting that would make David Dickenson proud, you should make a pit stop here. It's a tiny wee establishment all but crammed to the rafters with sweetie mix-ups, and big bags of whatever your heart desires for roughly £1. It's good old fashioned fun, with chews that yer gran will remember, but also some modern stock as well. All the sweets are displayed so they're easily accessible, and the staff are eager to help if you need something from a jar. Their selection looks fresh and fruity - without the nutrients, but who goes to a sweet shop to get their five a day? Not likely, and the sweets look properly made up and not horribly synthesized. Full ingredients are on each pack so you know exactly what you're getting, which is vital info for those with allergies. The staff are nice and chirpy and it's lovely going into a sweet shop that's off the beaten track and not full of corporate big brands. The displays are nice inside and out, but most importantly, my friends, I can report I polished off the best bag of candy crayons I've ever experienced. The staff were trepid in my choice because they were rhubard and custard flavoured, but they shouldn't have worried because they were gone in 60 seconds. In my belly. It was my first purchase from Glickman's, but it will not be my last! An enthusiastic two thumbs up! I love a sweet shop that has old confectionary boxes in the window but some tasty treats on offer inside! Someone to take your gran, kids and pals. Get tucked in!

A stall in East Kilbride Shopping Centre rather than a shop, there isn't much room to wander around and gaze at the sugary delights. For that reason alone you know what to expect here; lots and lots of old school sweets at not very cheap prices. Nevertheless, this place at least adds a bit of colour to an overwhelmingly drab section of the shopping centre and ensures there is a bit of, albeit irritating, life to the place in the shape of hyper kids.

In addition to the glorious walls of jars filled with sugary treats, they also do a rather fine hot chocolate (fair trade coffee is also on offer) with everything priced as we have come to expect form these places. I used to work in an old fashioned candy shop (yes it was the best job ever and I could eat all the sweets I wanted) and these songs were played on rotation. It drove me nuts. Anyway, Sugar Candy Mountain, bang on the centre of the affluent suburb of Milngavie, sells all the old fashioned sweets from your childhood in the original jars stacked on shelves around the shop. I agree with the previous reviewers points that the new trend for retro shops has resulted in some overstyled twee places. However, I really don't think Sugar Candy Mountain falls into that same irritating bracket. When I visited yesterday, schoolchildren were gathered round the sweets asking the prices excitedly and an elderly woman was sitting at the counter, enjoying a cup of tea with the owner. It appeared to be a meeting place for the community, not just kitsch place for faux bohemians to spend £2 on half a bar of macaroon (a similar west end establishment springs to mind here). And that's can't be a bad thing can it?

When we walked in, a young woman was standing near some chocolate with a pen and a piece of paper in her hands. It was obvious she was doing some sort of inventory or something. She never greeted us. We were there for a minute or two and we got to the side where she was, to continue browsing to see what we wanted to buy, she never said hello, offered to move or ask if she could help us with anything. Instead, she continued writing on her paper. We didn't come at closing time so it was off putting. We left without patronizing the business.

The top sellers are Thornton's Continental Chocolate boxes (which make an awesome Christmas/birthday present or treat) and their special toffee which I'm sure could be held accountable for many a hefty dentist bill and come in many appetising flavours. The shop sells chocolate sculptures that can be personalised for birthdays Easter Christmas or one of occasions as well as excellent ice-cream. Some shops also have chocolate fountains which are ridiculous yet genius.

Thorntons. Oh, dear, dear Thorntons…read more Here's a confession: I like chocolate. I really do, but Thorntons is not my favourite chocolate in the world, Milka is. However, there's a special South African someone who you can easily bribe with the Fudge Brownie Chocolate from Throntons. Whenever I ask if I should bring him something from the UK, I get that look and the "Only chocolate, please" (and here I was thinking I was sweet enough for him... clearly not haha). They are quite expensive, but luckily they are usually on a Buy 3 for 2 offer. The last time I bought the chocolate from their Buchanan Galleries store, the cashier girl did however not inform me of this - shame I would have bought more, she would have gotten higher sales and the South African would have been even happier, but alas, it wasn't to be. Now, the South African is not the only one who has a thing for Thorntons. My German step-mother has a thing for mints, something the UK is very good at. On a whim I bought her a bag of the Mint Crumbles. Boy, what was I thinking? Now every time I go back to Germany I have to bring at least an entire box of them (the sales lady at this particular shop was so lovely to sell me an entire box of 12 bags, as it would be easier to carry around, bless her cotton socks!) - and I almost sparked a family feud between my Father and her when I sent her a few bags randomly, and my father claimed them to leave them at his house (apparently for her) but when she arrived the following day, he had finished the majority of them. So you have it, Thorntons do amazing chocolate and mint crumbles that the foreigners are crazy about, and the sales assistants (especially in this store) are very helpful and friendly. I like their chocolates, but if I had the choice between Milka and Thorntons, I would always go for the purple cow.
