Channing House is primarily a retirement community that opened in the 1960s, and added a new…read morebuilding/facility to serve assisted living and skilled nursing patients sometime around 2015. Within the last year, I have had two family members -- neither a resident of the retirement community -- spend time in that new facility. This review is about the facility, not about the retirement community as I have no experience with it -- beyond meeting many delightful residents. Everyone working at Channing House is friendly -- they do a first-rate job of hiring topnotch people, not just the kind and knowledgeable nursing staff but all the employees who work behind the scenes to keep the place humming, greet visitors, drive patients to medical appointments, and bring gourmet meals to residents. Everyone gets personal attention. Our most recent experience was with the SNF, and everyone who came to visit the patient commented on how clean and cheerful it was. I was told that many of the residents of the retirement community volunteer in the SNF -- one of the volunteers said to me "we figure we are all going to spend time here at some point, so we want to make sure it's nice!" I credit Channing House with the fact that both my family members recovered from serious health setbacks and progressed to the point that they could be discharged back home. The location -- perfect for walks (and always lots of parking) -- is a nice bonus, and let us take outings to coffee shops, the nearby park, downtown library, and even Sephora.

They set the tone for this independent, non-profit retirement home. The staff from top to bottom has done a Herculean (and Sisyphusian) task of keeping residents and staff safe. The communication has been **daily** with outside family, including emails, voicemail blasts when necessary, and a weekly update by the head of Channing House via Zoom with all residents and family that wish to participate. The staff is working so hard and so effectively and sensitively to keep everyone healthy, comfortable, and well cared for. They are surrogates for all of us family who cannot be there in person. Francis took the time to explain everything clearly and made sure all of our concerns were addressed. We are also extremely grateful to the two outstanding case managers, Arlene and Romeo. They went above and beyond to ensure a smooth and stress-free discharge home after my aunt's recovery. Their coordination, communication, and genuine care made the transition seamless and gave our family great peace of mind. Most importantly, residents are treated like human beings, with dignity, kindness and respect. John was also a straight shooter from the beginning, and we always felt fortunate to have found Gordon Manor. Ultimately, my dad ended up moving to another facility to be closer to family. Even during that difficult transition, the entire staff could not have been more gracious and respectful. They never once made us feel uncomfortable, and it was obvious how much the staff genuinely cared about my dad. That meant more to our family than I can express and spoke volumes about the relationships they build with their residents. Finding the right home for a loved one with memory issues can be incredibly difficult, but choosing Gordon Manor was an easy decision. I also encourage families to review their publicly available licensing records through the California Department of Social Services. When we reviewed them, the absence of complaints and citations was remarkable, and based on our experience, not surprising. What really stood out was how client-centered they were. Every staff member we passed made eye contact, said "hello," and acknowledged each resident by name--as if each person truly mattered. This review is from Jan. 2023…read more I write it - long overdue - for you to make sure there's been a change in management and underlying grossly negligent systemic conditions threatening patient safety since then. It was an incredibly dangerous stay. CA should shut the place down if those conditions persist. 1. Broken blood pressure machines. My parent needed his B/P checked several times a day, to adjust his medications. No one told me the blood pressure machine was broken. It was a traveling nurse who informed me to bring one in that actually works. 2. Failure to administer oxygen My parent was short of breath and needed oxygen one night and into the next day. He pleaded for oxygen. A traveling nurse told me all they had to do was text the doctor for oxygen tanks in his room - but no one did that. Stanford hospital finally intervened, getting him in-room oxygen tanks. But he never should've suffered like that. 3. Threatened discharges The Terraces threatened to discharge my parent for "refusing" to do PT. He never refused - he wanted to do PT! The PT notes clearly stated it was "too dangerous" for him to do the PT. The PTs had to help us fight the discharge. 4. Dairy given to lactose intolerant They regularly gave him food full of dairy, when he was marked as lactose intolerant. This made him very sick each time, increased his weakness and worsened his underlying health conditions. 5. Warehoused him For 2 weeks, no one informed the family of his medical condition preventing PT. Just left him lying in bed. After 2 weeks, a doctor said he'd adjust his medications. After another week, the doctor offered to increase the medications because he wasn't improving. But he wasn't improving because he'd never received the first dose! In increasing his medication, the doctor never checked whether he actually received the first dose level. Totally dangerous. Again - a traveling nurse was the one who checked. 4 weeks later, he started receiving the medication and could start the PT program. 6. Nurses didn't follow doctor orders Because nurses weren't following the doctor's orders, I taped handwritten signs to the wall over his bed, stating the doctor's orders in large print. My parent had to repeatedly ask the nurses to read my posted signs. In conclusion, if nothing is changed since 1/23, The Terraces should be shut down. It should be reopened ONLY under new management and AFTER it fixes the underlying systemic problems inflicting gross negligence in medical care on its elderly fragile patient population.

After my mom passed away, my dad moved to California to be close to our family. When he moved into…read moreRedwood Villa, it was exactly the right 'fit' for him. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The property is well maintained. Redwood Villa is family-owned and run, and that caring atmosphere is prevalent throughout. My dad, who was fairly independent, had several medical emergencies, and staff was extremely accommodating as well as always keeping an eye out for him. We needed some modifications to his apartment, such as a cut-out in the tub so he could step in easily after hip surgery, and it was no problem. Staff was always extremely pleasant; there was never a 'honeymoon' period where it seems great and then diminishes over time...it was always great. We enjoyed the events held during the year such as the Christmas party, New Years party, Mothers Day dinner, etc. It's not a skilled nursing facility, and that was perfect for our needs. Residents do have assistants who come in to help with their various needs, but that's not provided directly through Redwood Villa. Their rates are extremely reasonable, and I can't recommend them highly enough.

I moved my mom from a memory care facility in Mountain View because she was falling almost every…read moreday - she is wheelchair-bound and cannot walk or stand without assistance. I felt like she was not safe at the previous place due to lack of consistent supervision for all the residents.- not just my mom. I didn't want to risk my mom's already fragile state, waiting for them to fix the problems and lack of good staffing. We found Sunnyside Gardens through my mom's hospice provider (and hospice should know - they have to visit all their patients in memory care or skilled-nursing facilities). Sunnyside is not flashy -- it's the PEOPLE that make it beyond amazing. I have never found my mother (or any other resident) alone or unsupervised at Sunnyside. The staff is super friendly, and they all jump in to help each other with the residents. They are completely informative and prompt whenever there may be an issue with my mom's health - and they also tell hospice, so I don't have to do anything. I have never been kept in the loop like this - it's really caring and compassionate. I love my mom's room - it's got its own sliding glass door (alarmed) so I can take my mom outside in a gated patio/garden area. The laundry and cleaning schedules are clearly posted in her bathroom, and I've never seen my mom's room look dirty or messy. It could be that they keep it clean since she is never really in her room except to sleep! She is kept with her friends (other residents) in the activity area, eating in the dining area, or on trips with the staff. She had no issues fitting in and becoming part of the Sunnyside Gardens family. I have said it many times in the months my mom has been there - the staff is amazing - every single one of them, from the executive director to the facilities manager, from the memory care director to the caregivers.

She had a neat, spacious and sunny room, which I know lifted her spirits after the loss of her husband. The meals were delicious, and she quickly gained much needed weight. She also loved participating in the activities and scenic driving tours, which kept her engaged and cheerful. The staff was very kind and caring, as well as conscientious about keeping me well informed about her health and well being. They would even send me updates and photos when they knew I would be traveling and unable to visit. And when my mom was hospitalized, staff members made a point to visit her. The facility is clean and well maintained. Sunnyside Gardens is also small enough that the staff know all the residents well, and residents always appeared well groomed and cared for. I'm so grateful that my mom had such a soft place to land during a difficult and painful time for her.
