    Charter Oak Federal Credit Union

    Charter Oak Federal Credit Union

    (5 reviews)

1 star -- "Member-owned" in name only…read more I've banked with Charter Oak Federal Credit Union for about 10 years personally (checking + savings) and over 6 years for my business account. In all that time, I've never had an overdraft fee, never had a penalty-type charge, and have maintained my accounts responsibly. You'd think that kind of long-term, clean history would count for something. It doesn't. This credit union has turned into the opposite of what a credit union is supposed to be: rigid, slow, dismissive, and completely unwilling to support the very people who keep it open. They talk about "members" like it means something--until you actually need them. Then it's policy, delays, and attitude. Issue #1: I brought in a legitimate business check for over $6,100 from a reputable coin exchange shop in Guilford, CT, drawn on another bank. As a long-time customer with established accounts, I expected a normal transaction. Instead, they refused to cash it and told me they wanted to put an extended hold of 7-10 business days. That is insane. That's not "protecting members." That's punishing loyal members by holding their money hostage while offering zero flexibility, zero problem-solving, and zero customer service. When I said, "Give me my check back--I'm switching banks," the teller responded "okay" with a sarcastic smirk/tone like they couldn't care less. That interaction told me everything I needed to know: they don't value loyalty, they don't value relationships, and they don't value basic professionalism. For comparison: I took the SAME check to KeyBank, and they cashed it on the spot for a $7 fee even though I'm not even a member there. A bank that doesn't know me treated me better than the credit union I've supported for a decade. I opened a new account at Liberty Bank today and I'll be spending the rest of this week switching all my direct deposit and bill pay over. Charter Oak lost a long-term customer because they chose policy and attitude over common sense. Issue #2: In November 2025, I ordered a black winter coat from Columbia and they sent navy instead. When I tried resolving it with Columbia, I was told I'd have to pay return shipping, pay for packing materials, and then buy a more expensive "truly black" coat because the one I ordered was on special sale at the time. In other words: they made the mistake and wanted me to pay for it. So I did what any customer should be able to do: I tried to start a chargeback claim through Charter Oak since I used my bank card. Charter Oak dragged this out through FOURTEEN (14) separate messages--yes, fourteen--requesting info, back-and-forth, delay after delay... only to eventually tell me they would not honor my dispute. I provided photos, order details, and even the customer-service chat showing Columbia would not fix their mistake. Charter Oak still refused to help their own customer. So what's the point of their "member service"? It felt like the process was designed to wear me down and waste my time until I gave up. Issue #3: Last August, I attempted a mobile deposit because I had just had surgery and had limited ability to leave my home. I endorsed the check and uploaded clear photos of the front and back. A full week went by and it still wasn't posted. When I called my local branch, I was told: "Mobile deposits take longer--you should've come in." I explained I had just had surgery and limited mobility. Then she told me the best part: if I had brought the check in person, it would've only had up to a three-day hold. So let me get this straight: the "convenient" service they advertise is slower, and when a customer uses it during a real-life medical situation, the response is basically "too bad." I asked if they could cancel the pending mobile deposit so I could just bring the physical check in and deposit it properly. The answer was no. I asked for an exception given the emergency circumstances and serious surgery. Still no accommodation made. This makes zero sense. Clearing a check should follow a consistent verification process regardless of whether it's deposited in person, at an ATM, or by mobile deposit. What I experienced was not "process"--it was indifference. They also constantly spam you with marketing emails trying to sell things like life insurance, and sometimes send the same marketing materials by physical mail. That's what they waste members' money on? Junk email and junk mail? I'd rather they spend those resources on training staff, improving service, and actually supporting members when there's a problem. Honestly, I'd prefer they closed altogether if this is what "member-owned" looks like. At minimum, they need a serious overhaul at the corporate level and to stop reinforcing the kind of rude, dismissive behavior that I experienced at the counter.

I signed up with Charter Oak a couple of years ago for checking and savings after moving up to this…read morearea. I'm surprised at the other reviews as I've never had any issues with the customer service, or fees. Very pleasant to deal with and no unnecessary fees. Recently I needed several medallion stamps and literally went nuts trying to find someone to do them, finally out of sheer frustration I contacted Charter Oak. Aaron Domingo took the time to not only do the medallion stamp but also the notary stamp on over ten items that I needed. With no charge!! He literally spent over two hours helping me all while being very professional, polite and friendly! If I could give more stars I would.
