The lead lady on the bottom bar treated my family with discrimination because of her political affiliation. Completely in poor taste, and should not have happened. We were respectful and nonpolitical, she assumed from our ethnic backgrounds and treated us accordingly. She verbatim said she will not serve our kind. Then proceeded to tell all her bar tenders to no longer serve us. Regrettably we had to get our drinks upstairs. She went out of her way to stare at us from the top, making my mother uncomfortable. If you want a pub without employees making every thing political, this is not the spot. We do not even entertain politics, she just put us in a basket. This is the first time in my life I had to exit the pub because of the brainwashed ultra lefty employee. I love all people and people on the left, it sucks that this extremist ruined the night after spending our hard earned money. Loved my visit to Waxy O'Connor's. I had one glass of Strawberry Lime cider, and I've been craving it ever since. (See picture below.) It was the second pub I visited on my visit to London, and again, I can't wait to go back. First, the prices: in America, two drinks would have cost at least $20; here, two drinks were only £11. I would've spent the whole night there if I could, but when you're traveling and have places to be early the next day, it's hard. Second, the service and ambiance were great. This was the coolest pub I've ever been to and we just happened to stumble in. Proximity is what lead us here and man were we lucky. It was a Thursday night and it seemed like the bar was pretty busy when we walked in. We decided to walk towards the back and see if we could find a table. The "back" kept going and going and going. This looks like the Keebler elves invited us in for a pint. There were staircases going down and up all over. We walked past a total of 4 bars in this place before we decided to sit in front of a fireplace (because why wouldn't they have one). It got very hot very quickly but luckily a couple was getting up from a table nearby so we moved. The table we were at was big so multiple times we invited other people to sit because this place was SO BUSY. On a Thursday? Both groups we chatted with were locals who we shocked we found this place and mentioned this is where they bring any out of towners when they visit. Unplanned visit to an Irish pub for Fish n chips. Oh my! The mix of comfort, tradition, and an eclectic atmosphere made it hard to beat enjoying fish 'n' chips in this pub. We all ordered the classic, and it absolutely delivered. Paired that with a pint of Guinness and it was all gone. The fish came out golden and perfectly crisp, the batter was light and airy without being oily. The fish was tender and flaky, cooked just right so it melted in every bite. A squeeze of lemon and a side of tangy tartar sauce tied everything together wonderfully. The presentation was simple, served on a warm plate with a small mound of mushy peas. For a pint, you cant beat it. Dont sit in the front, go explore the back hidden bar areas. It is like an underground Hobbit sanctuary meets a UK pub. No comments in the food, but the beer selection is very sufficient. There are three floors, plus a fourth level for restrooms. You would never know it from the small door front. Very mixed reviews of this place on Yelp, which tells it is attracting a lot of American tourists, and that the reaction is very mixed. i fell in the mostly negative camp. Decided to stop in, and check out the multi-level bar, and it definitely is unique. It was quite busy inside, with folks socializing and drinking, but we also wanted to eat dinner, so wandered a bit until we found an open table. Menus are given at each table, and there is no table service. Once you decide what you want, you go to the bartender to place your order. The female bartender I approached was off, didn't greet me when I smiled and just nodded when I asked if I could place a food order. We kept it simple, and asked for a bacon cheeseburger only, fish and chips, and a Guinness along with a recommended Irish Red on tap. She told me she only had Guinness...I thought she misunderstood me, but when I repeated my question, she said she only had Guinesss products and had a good IPA (which is not what I wanted). So I just asked for a glass of tap water, which she immediately provided. She did a nice job of pouring the Guiness, waiting to make sure I didn't get too much foam. I then paid for everything at once. No itemized receipt is offered, just a credit card receipt, which only gives a total (£42.11). She told me to wait so she could give me a number to take back to the table..so I did, but then proceeded to ignore me. I gave a quick 'Hi' and wave, and she then told me not to 'worry about it'. I was getting irritated by this point, but not all bartenders are friendly, so figured needed to cut my losses and go. Well, I don't think she placed my order at all. We waited 20 minutes, and then I went to another bartender to ask 'How long it usually takes to get a food order'...'Oh, 10 - 15 usually'. So I told him I had been waiting for 20 minutes, and he asked me what my number was. Yeah, that got a scowl from me and a response. He said he would check. I then sat down, and about a minute later, he told me "They are making it...a couple more minutes please". Well about 7 minutes later..I was still waiting, so was going to come back up...but then saw someone from below come up with our two plates. The food itself was OK, but certainly at the bottom of our meals we've had on our trip, especially for the price. There was one large piece of fish (£17), expertly battered and fried and came with a thick, really good tartar sauce...but no opportunity for malt vinegar since at this point, we were on our own. It wasn't cod, thinking it was haddock...a thinner white fish. The burger (£16)was good but not large, but had other toppings like thousand island dressing on it, so my wife wouldn't eat it. i should have been more specific. Both came with chips (fries) and was good. They had single use ketchup packets at the table.. The Guinness was excellent. So summary: OK food, bad service, non-value prices, weird selection of beer. Saw the high Yelp scores and went here for a quick bite to eat bite before a West End show. Despite the simple menu, it wasn't quick at all. Also, the food was just ok. I imagine the high marks might be for the drinking, since this place is huge with tons of cozy corners to chat with friends. Fish & Chips: Pretty standard. The fish was crispy and the chips were crispy. Both tasty enough. Not quite the super-sized portions of specialty fish & chips shops. Shepherd's Pie: Really appreciate that they used minced lamb instead of minced beef (like so many misnomer-ed U.S. shepherd's pie do). The meat was flavorful and complemented with nice and firm peas. Love this place. It's right next to the "Times Square" of London, but don't let that fool you. This place is far removed as being a tourist trap. You order at the bar and sit wherever you want and they bring the food out to you. We had a burger and a meat pie. Yes, a meat pie. I've been wanting to try one of these forever, and I just never got around to it. Until now that is! Service was great, and everyone here was very friendly. They also have a tree theme going on, as if a giant tree is growing into the bar. It's pretty cool. We really loved visiting Waxy O'Connors! It is located in Chinatown, just up from Picadilly Circus. At first glance it doesn't seem like much, but once you enter down the steps it ends up being a sizeable pub with multiple levels. It also offers live music. Food must be ordered at the bar and it will be delivered later. Like most places abroad, the food here is great. The is more hands off, but that is somewhat expected within a pub. Are the managers deaf? My husband and I spent a week in London and one of the "requirements" while we were there was to go to an English pub, have a couple of pints and some fish and chips. My husband chose this particular location, and made sure there was something I would eat/drink on the menu. We arrived and the place was pretty busy. We headed upstairs because we wanted food and many of the pubs that we had popped into over the course of the week had food upstairs. Turns out there was no need to go upstairs, but it was nice anyway as it was a bit away from the hustle and bustle. We sat at the table for a bit and perused the menu before figuring out you have to go to the bar to order both drinks and food. My husband went downstairs, ordered our food and beverages, and paid. He showed back up with our drink and a number so that when our food was ready they would know where to find us. Drinks were good and reasonably priced. The food arrived in a relatively short amount of time. My husband enjoyed his fish and chips My chicken burger was just okay. The fried chicken taste was good, but it desperately needed some sort of sauce like a bbq, mustard, or curry. The fries were fine. They were reasonably hot and modestly crispy. After eating we walked around the pub which is actually really cool and quite huge. I kind of wish we had eaten in the room with the tree once we saw it. Overall, the food was decent. This restaurant/bar instantly shoots up my list as one of the most interesting places I've ever been in, hands down. It's just so damn cool. Everywhere you look there are incredibly detailed artworks and pieces of all kinds that you are mesmerized by. It feels like being a part of the Harry Potter or LOTR world inside. It's almost a literal maze with winding rooms, staircases and nooks throughout. I can only imagine a night of drinking and trying to find my way out of this place. If the decor and overall vibe wasn't good enough Waxy's easily gave me one of the best meals of my entire holiday. I ordered the Sausage Roll and the Steak Chuck Pie. I didn't think I would care for English food or pub food much but it totally blew me away.. so much so that when they didn't have a takeaway box for me, I buckled down and finished as much of my plate as I could manage. In honor of St. Patrick's day!! I could keep this brief. And to a point I will, and to a point I will not. The coolest bar I have (in my lifetime) been to. I know I still have a lot of traveling to do and more places to find but this place... built around a tree has like 3... maybe 4 (I really don't remember) different bar areas to ensure you get the drinks you need quickly. Perhaps the word need isn't the right word. Everyone is happy dancing and singing and even being an American I was able to pick up on some of the choruses and sing along and always dance along. I love that they covered Metallica's Whiskey in the Jar O ;) We met dozens of people, such a friendly lot and everyone got along great. I can't think of what more you could want. Just joy at its core. THE VERDICT: If you only get to go to one bar while you are in London, I say go here. Friday, Saturday or Sunday night... doesn't matter any of those nights you will experience a fun loving crowd and be amazed by the tree that represents the roots that bring us all together for one remarkable night. Over a semester abroad in London I went here three different times and loved each one. Such a good spot to kick back, order a few pints, and enjoy the space. First time I went I could barely find my group as there are so many different levels to the bar, and the wooden walls and decor make you feel like your in a forest. I found this sense of confusion and mystique a plus for sure. While I've never tried the food here, I've seen it passing by and it looked great. Whether you're sitting down in a booth, perched on a stool, or standing up for a busy Thursday happy hour, this is the place to be.
