They may not represent the most cutting-edge art in the world, but (almost) any public art is good art, and so I'm happy to point them out. Actually, these sculptures are the kinds of thing you speed by a hundred times in a car, but never think to stop and look. So, here's your invitation to to just that -- or just to admire them on the internet from the comfort of your home. The mosaics are all by San Diego artist Kim Emerson http://www.kimemersonmosaics.com She's got other pieces at the port, the Sun Harbor Marina, and even at the Children's Hospital, just to name a few. They definitely reflect the 'feel' of America's finest city and, thus, deserve a second look. Today was my first visit to the North Coastal Art Gallery and I was very impressed. When I walked into the space, the man working greeted me quickly and said I could fill out a small paper choosing my favorite piece, and they do a 'best in show' every month, based on the votes. The Gallery is on La Jolla Blvd, so there there is a lot of street traffic outside, but the interior is very tranquil, chic, and warm. The location of CenterLight makes it a true local gallery. In fact, the current exhibition exclusively features artists from La Jolla. All of the pieces on display at CenterLight are new and even the work of the gallery owner, Maria Repke, can be found hanging on the walls. If pay a visit to CenterLight, chance are you will run into Maria, she is very welcoming and knowledgeable and she is a talented artists to boot.
