Get the kind of feeling that they don't care when you get your glasses, especially if you pay upfront

Originally, I was referred to a much larger statewide eye care facility/company, but I left that visit feeling uneasy. Everything felt rushed and I never felt like my questions were fully answered. After researching reviews for Dr. Krishnan and The Eye Institute, I asked my eye doctor for a referral there instead, and I'm very glad I did. The staff was excellent throughout the entire process. Everyone took their time and made sure things were explained clearly. I never felt rushed during appointments or follow-ups. The team was friendly, patient, and genuinely helpful. Dr. Krishnan was the biggest reason the experience stood out. He answered every question and concern I had, explained his recommendations clearly, and never made me feel like I was just being moved through a schedule. The cataract procedure itself went smoothly and I've had zero issues afterward. I highly recommend this office and Dr. Krishnan for eye care.

During my time with the practice, I observed a level of gossip, negativity, and interpersonal conflict among employees that I found very concerning. Employees sometimes discussed patients and other staff members in a negative or disrespectful manner while patients were nearby or within hearing distance. In my opinion, this is particularly concerning in a healthcare environment, where professionalism, confidentiality, respect, and patient dignity should be priorities. I also observed what appeared to be inconsistent standards of accountability. There seemed to be a strong focus on identifying mistakes or shortcomings among newer employees, while some long-term employees appeared to engage in behavior that was equally, or at times more, concerning. I observed instances of employees appearing to cross professional boundaries with patients or engaging in behavior that could be perceived as inappropriate toward physicians. I believe all employees, regardless of how long they have worked for the practice or their relationships within the organization, should be held to the same standards of professionalism and conduct. Another concern is the close relationships among some employees, including family members and longtime friends working within the same office. From my perspective, these relationships appeared to contribute to an environment where gossip and interpersonal issues could continue without being adequately addressed. I also felt that employees who did not participate in gossip or negative conversations about patients or coworkers could feel isolated or scrutinized. I was particularly disappointed by the level of training and support I received as a new employee. I did not feel that I was provided with the appropriate training, guidance, or support necessary to be successful in the position. At the same time, I felt there was considerable attention placed on finding faults with newer employees rather than providing them with the tools and support needed to succeed. There were also significant logistical and workspace concerns. The practice has hired additional employees but does not appear to have adequate workspace or equipment to accommodate the growing staff. Employees may have to move between workstations or borrow another employee's computer in order to clock in and out or complete their responsibilities. In addition, there appeared to be insufficient appropriate seating and workspace for employees. Expecting employees to remain on a stool for extended periods because adequate chairs are unavailable is not an ideal working environment. I also found that my personal and professional values did not align with aspects of the management style and workplace culture. I take integrity, professionalism, respect, confidentiality, and doing the right thing very seriously. Unfortunately, I did not feel that those values were consistently reflected in the environment in which I was working. This is a successful and potentially very lucrative practice, and I believe it has the opportunity to improve significantly by addressing these concerns. My purpose in providing this feedback is not to attack individual employees, but to bring attention to patterns that I believe could affect employee morale, patient experience, staff retention, and the professional reputation of the practice. I would encourage leadership to evaluate workplace conduct consistently, regardless of an employee's tenure or personal relationships within the organization; strengthen training and support for new employees; establish clear expectations regarding respectful communication and patient confidentiality; address inappropriate workplace behavior when it occurs; and ensure that adequate workspace, equipment, and resources are available to the employees being hired. There are employees within the practice who demonstrate genuine professionalism, compassion, and dedication, and I believe those individuals should be recognized. However, the concerns I experienced were significant enough that I ultimately felt the workplace culture was not a good professional fit for me. My hope is that this feedback will be taken constructively and used as an opportunity to strengthen the organization. A successful practice requires not only strong medical care, but also a workplace culture built on professionalism, accountability, respect, teamwork, and patient-centered care.
