Waugh Jiu-Jitsu is the perfect place to train! I have been training with Professor Waugh since 2009 and could not imagine training at any other place. When I first started I wanted to learn martial arts and thought that Jiu-Jitsu would suit me best because I am not big. Actually when I started I was only 120 lbs I am now 130 lbs but have learned the right techniques to feel comfortable if i have to defend myself against anyone of any size outside of school. Waugh is a fourth degree black belt under Carlos Machado but he doesn't just teach martial arts, he teaches life lessons. Each week he offers a message of the week that we can use on and off the mat, within the academy and outside with our family and friends. His level of skill, sportsmanship, kindness, and humbleness is one of a kind. He makes it his goal to get to know each and every student, which I believe is wonderful. His wife also helps to run the school and she always greets everyone with a smile and kind words. There is a wide variety of students that anyone coming in for the first time can be paired with. When I first came to the academy in 2009 I wasn't sure if it would be for me because of my size but he has plenty of professors there that were willing to help. He even had one professor that was my size and took me under his wing for a long time to teach me how to roll using my size as an advantage. Not only does Waugh teach his students Jiu-Jistu and life lessons but he also raises money each year for the american cancer society. The school has a roll-a-thon where the students can volunteer to get sponsors to give a certain amount for each minute they roll for the event. Each year we are proud to be one of the top contributors for the American Cancer Society, even among bigger companies. Waugh's school is all about building people up, not beating people up. He gives us the tools we need to help each other out as brothers and sisters on the mat with our progress, but with the same tools we can protect ourselves, loved ones, or someone else if that case arises. He has a huge kid's class that are taught more then just jiu-jitsu. They are taught to respect what they learn, to respect each other, and to respect their parents. He has them learn a school motto that they say after each class. I have arrived early on occasions to watch the kids class because you can tell that they are having so much fun and when kids have fun that is when they learn the most. I am a brown belt now and plan on getting my black belt and I could not imagine anyone else but the person that tied my white belt around my waist to tie my black belt as well, especially a professor like Waugh! read more

The philosophy and instruction at Waugh BJJ is amazing. Myself, my two children, and my nephew train here. I know I was focused on the wrong things when I first entered. Price, belts, etc. Then I asked myself this, "How much is my safety worth?" Well I came to the conclusion it was priceless. Like any martial art, Jiu-Jitsu can be dangerous if taught and practiced in manner inconsistent with it's basic philosophy of technique over strength. Yes, you will probably find a less expensive school. However, I know you will not find a 4th degree black belt (Machado) with a genuine love for his students like Master Waugh. Jiu jitsu is a marathon, not a sprint. It's a lifestyle. It's a HUGE self confidence booster.... HUGE. The reality is that I didn't know what I was looking for when I walked in the door at Waugh BJJ. Who does, really? I just knew that I wanted to learn Jiu-Jitsu. So of course I started to base my decision on the usual purchase factors like price. Wrong. If you find yourself reading this, allow me to save you some grief. Focus on these : Safety - What good is to train in self defense if you can't defend yourself because your hurt from training. Cleanliness - What good did it do you to go with a less expensive school just to find out that they're cutting corners on hygiene. Clean mats are a must! Curriculum - Yes, your coach's belt, lineage and technique are paramount. But if your coach can not put together a long term and balanced curriculum, you'll feel like you're trying to learn algebra before simple addition. Culture - Are the students defining their status on how bad they beat you up, or do the students define themselves on how much they help their teammates. Coach - Check your coach's lineage. From whom did he/she receive their black belt. Don't take their word, do your own research. Waugh BJJ is five stars in each of these categories. Hope this helped. Hope to see you on the mat! read more

We entered Waugh jiujitsu with apprehension and excitement at the same time. After reviewing two other academies free trial program I was beginning to think MMA or martial arts may be something we would have to wait enrolling my then nine year old son into. After witnessing one unorganized dirty academy, to another ultra violent academy that encouraged the students to fight, we, were getting weary, to say the least. At Waugh jiujitsu, they soon put us at ease .We felt right at home immediately. The first class went well, and my son said this was where he wanted to train. I am happy to write this review for the academy. THIS IS TOP NOTCH JIUJITSU!. Master Waugh is a 4th degree black belt, under Grand Master: Carlos Machado. Master Machado has trained several celebrities, HELLO CHUCK NORRIS! The pedigree is definitely there! Waugh jiujitsu not only teaches outstanding, functional jiujitsu in a traditional manner, but demonstrates caring for what they affectionately call the "family". Your children, OR YOU will receive training from what I would define as an "Ivy league" caliber academy. Waugh jiujitsu teaches its students to be respectful at the academy, and everywhere else life takes them. "Show up to go up, and NEVER give up" is the formula for success here. I feel pride as I watch my son bow on the mat, along with the others I have become quite fond of, and vow to 'be their best'. The staff.........WAUGHSOME!!! Enough said. If you like the family atmosphere, want to learn the 'gentle art' from people that really care, LOOK NO FURTHER. Come to Waugh! and you will see for yourself why the students here are passionate about where they train. Hope to see you there! read more

If you are looking for a place to train in Jiu-Jitsu, check out Waugh Jiu-Jitsu Academy. It is considered the premier place to train and will allow you to see this beautiful martial art for what it truly is. Not too long ago, I didn't even know what Jiu-Jitsu was. After taking a free lesson, however, I fell in love with Jiu-Jitsu. When I first stepped foot into the academy, I felt the energy and respect of everyone. My experience on the mat produced good feelings within me; from the very first technique, I knew this is what I wanted to do. Although I have limited experience with the sport, my confidence has soared. Master Orlando Waugh is the best leader and instructor I have ever met. He teaches and inspires his students with passion to make them champions and leaders. Every time he delivers a weekly lesson, I wish he would continue talking forever. As an international student attending school in the USA, I have received the highest respect from everyone in the academy, and I am proud to be part of the Waugh Jiu-Jitsu Academy family. We support each other inside the academy, and outside the academy, we support the community. The academy's logos is, "It's not about beating people up; it's about building them up." I made a good decision in choosing the Waugh Jiu-Jitsu Academy to train in the best martial art. I invested in myself to learn Jiu-Jitsu, especially with the fourth-degree Master Waugh, who has much to offer his students. Not only do I learn the martial art, but I also learn many other things from him and other students. Come visit the academy and see for yourself. read more

I am a small female, and I was looking for a place to get back into the martial arts. My journey with Waugh Jiu-Jitsu Academy actually started at the grocery store. I had recently moved to the area, and saw someone wearing an academy t-shirt. Since the man was slightly taller than I am, and seemed pleasant, I asked about the dojo. That was the best "random" question I could have ever walked up and asked a person. The chief instructor, Master Orlando Waugh, is a fourth degree black belt. He has trained many wonderful black belts that help with all of the beginner and advanced classes. The dojo culture is fantastic. There is an atmosphere of trust, respect, and family. We take care of each other in this academy, and it is like an extended family. I have a lot of brothers and sisters in Jiu-Jitsu now! With regard to price, you get what you pay for. Personally, I think it is very reasonable. I have trained for over 12 years in other martial arts, and price and quality vary from institution to institution. At Team Waugh Jiu-Jitsu, there are family specials/promotions throughout the year. There are contests for fun events, and even special charity events for the community. This is really a wonderful organization, and I am really proud to be part of Team Waugh Jiu-Jitsu. read more

The attitude, confidence, fitness (and more) of our 7 year old son AND our oldest son, his fiancé, and our daughter (all 20s) benefit from 4th degree Jiu Jitsu black belt Master Waugh (whose instructor is THE GRAND MASTER CARLOS MACHADO, who graduated THE Chuck Norris as black belt and countless others). Look up Carlos Machado. I did. That's how I found out. Master Waugh is too humble to tell anyone. All name dropping aside, every day we observe new students and steadily-growing classes. Master Waugh and wife (professor/instructor/black belt/mommy) are humble, professional, and always uplifting just to be around. They love what they do.The record shows they know what they're doing, and you CAN AFFORD THEM because they will offer you payment plan options you'd be nuts to pass on. Considering the excellence of instruction (STAFF OF BLACK BELTS), the pedigree, the affordability, then the consistency, and the decision becomes easy. We are just thrilled and thankful to be on board and for our loved ones to be too. The only problem is that now we can't buy a house anywhere else or move away because staying close to Waugh Academy is JUST THAT IMPORTANT! read more

I was interested in taking some type of self-defense classes but was a bit apprehensive to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since I am a petite female without any prior experience in martial arts. I joined Waugh Jiu-Jitsu last fall and I could not be happier. Master Waugh is an extremely talented martial artist and instructor. Professor Waugh, Master Waugh's wife, sets a powerful example for females in BJJ and is an overall role model. The strong, positive, collaborative culture Master Waugh has created is evident throughout the academy. The instructors and students are truly top-notch people who are always willing to help out on and off the matt. Every class presents relevant, meaningful content that you drill with skilled training partners on the clean, spacious mats. Even when we are getting in some intense cardio and sweating it out, I don't notice how quickly time flies by because I am having so much fun. Training with Team Waugh has challenged me beyond learning/developing the techniques to helping me grow stronger in my personal well-being and leadership skills. Waugh Jiu-Jitsu is a phenomenal academy! read more

I've been training at this academy for the past 8 years and it has been the best years of my life. It totally changed my life around. Not only does Master Waugh, a 3rd degree Black Belt that trains under Grand Master Carlos Machado, teach you about mastering the art of Jiu Jitsu, but he also helps you master the art of Life. Its not about beating people up at the academy, its about building people up. Which is some thing people need to learn. Master Waugh teaches at a good pace for everyone to learn at. If you are experienced, he'll pull you off to the side for a more advanced move too. The place is always well kept and organized. I've never seen it dirty or trashy. There's a place for those to watch who are too chicken to step up on the mat. There's also a place for you to change you clothes and storage them just in case you're coming straight from somewhere. One of the best places to train because everyone is welcoming and always wanting to help. There's never a time where i feel left out or anything. This academy is the place to be! read more

My family and I have been a part of Waugh Jiu Jitsu Academy for 9 years and if you are looking for world class jiu jitsu or just a place to learn the basics and get in shape you will not find a better place. Regardless of age, gender, or physical ability everyone is made to feel a part of a team. Master Waugh creates an atmosphere of respect among all students at every skill level. New students are given the same level of attention and respect as students who have been there for years Master Waugh and/or high ranking instructors teach all adult and youth classes. The kids classes are always taught in a positive manner with a focus on building self esteem while learning jiu jitsu. I have trained in Martial Arts in the DFW area since 1976 and never been involved with a more knowledgeable, respectful instructor as Master Waugh and the people at Waugh Jiu Jitsu Academy. read more

Waugh Jiu Jitsu is a great place to introduce yourself to the ART of Jiu Jitsu. I have visited a few other jiu Jitsu businesses across the metroplex and can honestly say they live by the #KeepItPlayful motto. Everyone who trains there acts like a family and makes sure to protect and not hurt anyone. Some gyms have obvious ego issues, and that is not the case here. The classes are structured so that you learn Jiu Jitsu techniques, but Master Waugh also takes the time to talk about his life experiences and the power of a positive attitude. He used to hold a separate leadership class that is now introduced into every class that everyone can learn and grow from. His children's class is amazing way to teach children discipline and the importance of working hard in the classroom. He even rewards the students who bring in straight A report cards! read more

The Waugh family is great! My son (7 years old) has been coming to this academy for a little over a year and he's learned and grown so much. Each Master Waugh teaches a technique (I.E simple sweep, Triangle Arm Bar, and my sons favorite, the Guillotine). First, Master Waugh and his staff demonstrate the technique. Then the kids practice the technique in pairs, while the staff and master Waugh helps each group master the move. After they've had time practicing the "move of the week", master Waugh has a message of the week for the kids. This message is always powerful and inspiring. It not only a message about BBJ, but it is a life lesson. Overall, master Waugh has been a great influence in my sons life. I have seen a change since my son has been training at Waugh academy. read more

This is a really great place to train! I've been training here for about 18 months. They have a really great kids program too, so about 9 months ago I got my son involved as well. They really emphasize discipline and respect...not just for the kids, but for the adults too. I really like this place because I know that even if I've had a bad day I can come and train and I always leave the academy feeling better. I read a couple of negative reviews below and I couldn't help but notice that the people who reviewed this place negatively are people who never became members. Its unfortunate that they never got the chance to experience what this place is all about. I will continue to train at Advantage until I get my blackbelt and even after that! read more

Waugh Jiujitsu is the best place to train Jiujitsu! Going to Waugh Jiujitsu has helped me not just in my Jiujitsu skills, but also with my school work, acting better at home, and with my A.D.D., which is a disorder that makes me hyper and distracted. Before I first started Jiujitsu at Waugh Jiujitsu Academy I tried two other schools in Arlington. The first school was messy, and the second school scared me, it was way too violent and rough. Then, I tried out Waugh Jiujitsu and I was happy to be greeted by such nice people.I told my dad this is where I wanted to train. Thanks Master Waugh for all you do for me. You are a true hero to me! read more

My daughter and I have been training here for a year now.We absolutely love it!Master Waugh is an inspirational and tremendous teacher! The respect the kids show to the adults as well as to their classmates is SUPERB!It's a safe and family friendly environment that I would recommend to any parent wanting to get their child involved in martial arts! When I train in the adult class everyone from the high ranks to the lower ranks are great to work with! Some schools have higher ranks that are all about muscling and beating up their subordinates. The higher ranking students are very respectful and will help coach a lower ranking student. read more

Waugh Jiu Jitsu Academy is one of the best in the DFW metroplex. I attended classes as a guest during spring break. Instruction of technique was great, not overbearing (only worked 3 techniques per class, aside from the basic drills) and plenty of time given to drill each technique. Master Waugh's passion for teaching and love for the martial arts has definitely been passed to each and every student. I highly recommend his school to anyone who lives in the area. read more

It is a fantastic place to learn! You have such a supportive team to encourage you and amazing details that help guide you through your martial arts journey! Mr. Waugh is such a motivating Professor who takes the time to guide you towards your life goals! read more

Such a great place! My entire family trains jiu-jitsu here. Adults can train with their kids or choose adult only classes. This is the only place that I've been to that has the option of family training. I also love the fact that they don't just teach jiu-jitsu, they teach when to use it and when not to. Also great for teaching kids discipline and respect. I'm glad I found this place! read more
