Waugh Jiu-Jitsu is the perfect place to train! I have been training with Professor Waugh since 2009 and could not imagine training at any other place. When I first started I wanted to learn martial arts and thought that Jiu-Jitsu would suit me best because I am not big. Actually when I started I was only 120 lbs I am now 130 lbs but have learned the right techniques to feel comfortable if i have to defend myself against anyone of any size outside of school. Waugh is a fourth degree black belt under Carlos Machado but he doesn't just teach martial arts, he teaches life lessons. Each week he offers a message of the week that we can use on and off the mat, within the academy and outside with our family and friends. His level of skill, sportsmanship, kindness, and humbleness is one of a kind. He makes it his goal to get to know each and every student, which I believe is wonderful. His wife also helps to run the school and she always greets everyone with a smile and kind words. There is a wide variety of students that anyone coming in for the first time can be paired with. When I first came to the academy in 2009 I wasn't sure if it would be for me because of my size but he has plenty of professors there that were willing to help. He even had one professor that was my size and took me under his wing for a long time to teach me how to roll using my size as an advantage. Not only does Waugh teach his students Jiu-Jistu and life lessons but he also raises money each year for the american cancer society. The school has a roll-a-thon where the students can volunteer to get sponsors to give a certain amount for each minute they roll for the event. Each year we are proud to be one of the top contributors for the American Cancer Society, even among bigger companies. Waugh's school is all about building people up, not beating people up. He gives us the tools we need to help each other out as brothers and sisters on the mat with our progress, but with the same tools we can protect ourselves, loved ones, or someone else if that case arises. He has a huge kid's class that are taught more then just jiu-jitsu. They are taught to respect what they learn, to respect each other, and to respect their parents. He has them learn a school motto that they say after each class. I have arrived early on occasions to watch the kids class because you can tell that they are having so much fun and when kids have fun that is when they learn the most. I am a brown belt now and plan on getting my black belt and I could not imagine anyone else but the person that tied my white belt around my waist to tie my black belt as well, especially a professor like Waugh! read more

Dropped in at the School on 9/15/15 with my two boys ages 9 and 10. I asked the instructor that greeted me at the door if a class was about to start? He stated yes, I said great I want to watch a couple classes before I decide if this is the school for my boys. I have martial arts experience in Tae Kwon Do and Tang Soo Do. I want my boys to learn Jiujitsu not stand up. I myself am not new to martial arts. The instructor asked me "do you like bowling? Do u prefer to watch bowling or bowl? Do you follow me?" I gave him the look like really! Your talking to me like I'm an idiot... Then he says I can schedule you a consultation. Our times really fill up fast. How about 9/18 or 9/20. I said look I just want to watch a class see how you interact with adult and children. He said I'd be happy to schedule a consultation. I don't understand why I can't just watch a class. So we started to walk out and the instructor shrugged his shoulders and said well ok. We just walked out shaking our head. As a martial artist you know not every school is a good school. And before you as a consumer get wrapped in a contract you need to know what your getting yourself into. If your kids don't have chemistry with the instructor they aren't going to learn to their full potential. I'm very disappointed to see that they won't let you see a glimpse of how they teach, their discipline, respect, Honor, integrity etc... 1st impression is key. Seems to me like getting a signed contract was more important. Update 10/29/15: I received a message from Master Waugh asking me to drop in and talk to him about my experience. I'm not one not to give people the opportunity to explain or make things right. I dropped in unannounced and we sat and talked for quite some time. Im really happy I did. I had my two sons take advantage of the 1st class free offer that the school offers to everyone. I really liked what i heard. And I really like what I was seeing. I liked it so much I signed myself up too. Turning a bad situation into a great situation almost never happens. But I'm thankful it did. I would recommend this school to everyone. read more

The philosophy and instruction at Waugh BJJ is amazing. Myself, my two children, and my nephew train here. I know I was focused on the wrong things when I first entered. Price, belts, etc. Then I asked myself this, "How much is my safety worth?" Well I came to the conclusion it was priceless. Like any martial art, Jiu-Jitsu can be dangerous if taught and practiced in manner inconsistent with it's basic philosophy of technique over strength. Yes, you will probably find a less expensive school. However, I know you will not find a 4th degree black belt (Machado) with a genuine love for his students like Master Waugh. Jiu jitsu is a marathon, not a sprint. It's a lifestyle. It's a HUGE self confidence booster.... HUGE. The reality is that I didn't know what I was looking for when I walked in the door at Waugh BJJ. Who does, really? I just knew that I wanted to learn Jiu-Jitsu. So of course I started to base my decision on the usual purchase factors like price. Wrong. If you find yourself reading this, allow me to save you some grief. Focus on these : Safety - What good is to train in self defense if you can't defend yourself because your hurt from training. Cleanliness - What good did it do you to go with a less expensive school just to find out that they're cutting corners on hygiene. Clean mats are a must! Curriculum - Yes, your coach's belt, lineage and technique are paramount. But if your coach can not put together a long term and balanced curriculum, you'll feel like you're trying to learn algebra before simple addition. Culture - Are the students defining their status on how bad they beat you up, or do the students define themselves on how much they help their teammates. Coach - Check your coach's lineage. From whom did he/she receive their black belt. Don't take their word, do your own research. Waugh BJJ is five stars in each of these categories. Hope this helped. We entered Waugh jiujitsu with apprehension and excitement at the same time. After reviewing two other academies free trial program I was beginning to think MMA or martial arts may be something we would have to wait enrolling my then nine year old son into. After witnessing one unorganized dirty academy, to another ultra violent academy that encouraged the students to fight, we, were getting weary, to say the least. At Waugh jiujitsu, they soon put us at ease .We felt right at home immediately. The first class went well, and my son said this was where he wanted to train. I am happy to write this review for the academy. THIS IS TOP NOTCH JIUJITSU!. Master Waugh is a 4th degree black belt, under Grand Master: Carlos Machado. Master Machado has trained several celebrities, HELLO CHUCK NORRIS! The pedigree is definitely there! Waugh jiujitsu not only teaches outstanding, functional jiujitsu in a traditional manner, but demonstrates caring for what they affectionately call the "family". Your children, OR YOU will receive training from what I would define as an "Ivy league" caliber academy. Waugh jiujitsu teaches its students to be respectful at the academy, and everywhere else life takes them. "Show up to go up, and NEVER give up" is the formula for success here. I am a small female, and I was looking for a place to get back into the martial arts. My journey with Waugh Jiu-Jitsu Academy actually started at the grocery store. I had recently moved to the area, and saw someone wearing an academy t-shirt. Since the man was slightly taller than I am, and seemed pleasant, I asked about the dojo. That was the best "random" question I could have ever walked up and asked a person. The chief instructor, Master Orlando Waugh, is a fourth degree black belt. He has trained many wonderful black belts that help with all of the beginner and advanced classes. The dojo culture is fantastic. There is an atmosphere of trust, respect, and family. We take care of each other in this academy, and it is like an extended family. I have a lot of brothers and sisters in Jiu-Jitsu now! With regard to price, you get what you pay for. Personally, I think it is very reasonable. I have trained for over 12 years in other martial arts, and price and quality vary from institution to institution. At Team Waugh Jiu-Jitsu, there are family specials/promotions throughout the year. There are contests for fun events, and even special charity events for the community. I was interested in taking some type of self-defense classes but was a bit apprehensive to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since I am a petite female without any prior experience in martial arts. I joined Waugh Jiu-Jitsu last fall and I could not be happier. Master Waugh is an extremely talented martial artist and instructor. I've been training at this academy for the past 8 years and it has been the best years of my life. It totally changed my life around. Not only does Master Waugh, a 3rd degree Black Belt that trains under Grand Master Carlos Machado, teach you about mastering the art of Jiu Jitsu, but he also helps you master the art of Life. Its not about beating people up at the academy, its about building people up. Which is some thing people need to learn. Master Waugh teaches at a good pace for everyone to learn at. If you are experienced, he'll pull you off to the side for a more advanced move too. The place is always well kept and organized. I've never seen it dirty or trashy. There's a place for those to watch who are too chicken to step up on the mat. There's also a place for you to change you clothes and storage them just in case you're coming straight from somewhere. Waugh Jiu Jitsu is a great place to introduce yourself to the ART of Jiu Jitsu. I have visited a few other jiu Jitsu businesses across the metroplex and can honestly say they live by the #KeepItPlayful motto. Everyone who trains there acts like a family and makes sure to protect and not hurt anyone. Some gyms have obvious ego issues, and that is not the case here. The classes are structured so that you learn Jiu Jitsu techniques, but Master Waugh also takes the time to talk about his life experiences and the power of a positive attitude. He used to hold a separate leadership class that is now introduced into every class that everyone can learn and grow from. The Waugh family is great! My son (7 years old) has been coming to this academy for a little over a year and he's learned and grown so much. Each Master Waugh teaches a technique (I.E simple sweep, Triangle Arm Bar, and my sons favorite, the Guillotine). First, Master Waugh and his staff demonstrate the technique. Then the kids practice the technique in pairs, while the staff and master Waugh helps each group master the move. After they've had time practicing the "move of the week", master Waugh has a message of the week for the kids. This message is always powerful and inspiring. It not only a message about BBJ, but it is a life lesson. Overall, master Waugh has been a great influence in my sons life. This is a really great place to train! I've been training here for about 18 months. They have a really great kids program too, so about 9 months ago I got my son involved as well. They really emphasize discipline and respect...not just for the kids, but for the adults too. I really like this place because I know that even if I've had a bad day I can come and train and I always leave the academy feeling better. I read a couple of negative reviews below and I couldn't help but notice that the people who reviewed this place negatively are people who never became members. Going to Waugh Jiujitsu has helped me not just in my Jiujitsu skills,but also with my school work,acting better at home, and with my A.D.D., which is a disorder that makes me hyper and distracted. Before I first started Jiujitsu at Waugh Jiujitsu Academy I tried two other schools in Arlington. The first school was messy, and the second school scared me, it was way too violent and rough. My daughter and I have been training here for a year now.We absolutely love it!Master Waugh is an inspirational and tremendous teacher!The respect the kids show to the adults as well as to their classmates is SUPERB!It's a safe and family friendly environment that I would recommend to any parent wanting to get their child involved in martial arts!When I train in the adult class everyone from the high ranks to the lower ranks are great to work with!Some schools have higher ranks that are all about muscling and beating up their subordinates.The higher ranking students are very respectful and will help coach a lower ranking student. read more

Waugh Jiu Jitsu Academy is one of the best in the DFW metroplex. I attended classes as a guest during spring break. Instruction of technique was great, not overbearing (only worked 3 techniques per class, aside from the basic drills) and plenty of time given to drill each technique. Such a great place! My entire family trains jiu-jitsu here. Adults can train with their kids or choose adult only classes. This is the only place that I've been to that has the option of family training. I also love the fact that they don't just teach jiu-jitsu, they teach when to use it and when not to.
