It's been a good while, but I swore I'd never use them again. Really can't remember the reasons exactly,. But I was miserable there.

After a major foot operation, my dad could not walk without assistance. My mother couldn't lift him and without any in-home care, he needed to have a place to provide daily physical therapy, medical assistance and meals. Heritage Harbour Health & Rehabilitation Center is located near the Annapolis Mall and Riva Road, off in a secluded wooded area. It is very convenient. The rooms are shared with two people and a small curtain between the beds. The TVs are small and somewhat old. The TV channel is the Baltimore channel line-up which was difficult for my dad since he is an avid Washington sports fan. There is WIFI but it's not that reliable. The PT facility looked great. That's what it's all about. The therapists were very friendly and committed to getting everyone healthy. After my farther was sent home, they continued to visit his home and help with daily PT. Before we knew it, they arrived to pick up the wheel chair, walkers and everything else. Now my dad is walking about as good as new. Overall, my father never said anything bad about the place but was obviously happy to get home.

I and the rest of my 91 year Mom's progeny are very grateful she decided to retire from New York…read more nearly ten years ago before Mom thought she was ready for a retirement community. She chose to buy into Collington Life Care Community http://www.collington.com/ [non-profit CCRC] in [Mitchellville/Bowie, Md] in suburban Washington, D.C. Right away Mom plunged into lots of activities, planted the garden around her gracious cottage, took exercise and literature classes from Prince Georges Community College, on Collington Campus, and made friends with other active retirees and the very caring staff. She didn't partake of birdwatching, vegetable gardening, swimming, nearby golf courses, and some other outdoor activities. She chose to take on leadership roles in the Collington community and delivered Meals on Wheels. http://keepingupwithcollington.org/ When she broke her hip she was received rigorous and effective rehab while temporarily resident in the health center. When we 'made her' give up her car she was able to get to the Metro, shopping, doctors' appointments, Kennedy Center, Arena Center, and more via the Collington shuttle. When she had a small stroke she again moved back to he health center to receive rigorous rehab. Now she is back in her cottage, this time with a few hours of aides to help keep up her activities. Now as we spend more time walking the halls and grounds with her it's so gratifying to encounter numerous friends among the residents and staff who cheer on her recovery. I wish such stimulating, safe, and nurturing communities would be accessible for the growing upcoming senior population.

She lived in a beautiful cottage where birdwatching, gardening, music, walking her dog and making new friends filled her days. Using Collington transportation she had season tickets for the opera, the symphony, Arena Theater as well as enjoying many other cultural events at Collington and beyond. My 3 siblings and I fell in love with Collington's embrace of our mother and willingness to allow us to fully participate in Mother's life. In many, many ways through the years it became obvious to us that Collington valued its residents and wanted to encourage family involvement. The fabulous Sunday brunches, instituted by the head of dining services, Eli Ayoub are one of many examples. On any given Sunday one sees dozens of families, including children, grandchildren, even great-grandchildren enjoying the brunch together, feeding ducks on the lake. In these past two years, after a nasty fall, our mother was confined to assisted living. The care she received on Chesapeake was always compassionate and respectful. We grew to love each and every one of her caregivers. Again, we were encouraged to be there as much as possible. When the final days arrived our large family did vigil for a week. Instead of encouraging us to limit our visits, Eli arranged for a large hospitality tray to be delivered outside

I asked for some information on the coffee and i never got it. The food on the whole is barely mediocre, not as described in their brochure. The rooms are hot or cold because there is one thermometer for 4 rooms. The Ac In the PT gymn is lousy. Too much humidity because of a stop-gap portable AC that draws humid air into the room. It even has a bucket to hold the condensate that has to be emptied by hand. I have to use a comforter from home and wear a jacket at times. I was here 3 years ago and nothing has improved and the food has gone down hill. I hope News Week reads this because they are wrong. I doubt that they have ever been here or interviewed any patients. The 5 star CMS rating they tout is based solely on statistics. "Critics and industry experts have pointed to potential flaws in nursing home ranking methodologies, including those utilized by Newsweek and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which form the foundation of these rankings. Common criticisms center on the reliance on self-reported data, lagging metrics, and the failure of rankings to capture daily care quality." Strange people come and ask personal questions that do not have any thing to do with health care. Either make the facility match the advertising or make the advertising match the facility. GP

One of my parents is a resident now, and they have been in both the Assisted Living and (currently) the Cottage units (the latter being for memory care). First of all, I have to share my praise about the entire staff. I haven't met anyone there yet who didn't say hi or wasn't helpful. Everyone so far has been so wonderful to work with. They are understanding, helpful, engaging, and they seem to really care about their work. It makes a huge difference. The care provided appears to be top notch. I can't be around 24/7 of course, but the resident is doing very well physically, much more so than before arriving here. They even said the food is much better than they expected! The facility was very helpful in answering all of the questions I had, plus... many more that I didn't know I was going to ask! This whole process was all very new to me, and they understood this. They were patient with me and went out of their way to make us feel at home and at ease. So far, it's been a relief and a tremendously positive impact on our entire family.
