Hubs & I had gone sailing several times both with friends and on excursions before and were prepared for the wind and the spray, and most of all, I was excited for the heeling (hubs less so... but he loves me -- this was more in my wheelhouse than his). I admit, based on previous paid experiences I somewhat expected to have the option of handling the ropes to help with adjusting the sails, of course with appropriate guidance. In this case, that was a hard no; we were not to touch anything, "for safety". We got some commentary on the history of the island and it's fortresses - nice, but in my specific case take it or leave it (because we'd already been to Castillo San Cristobal). I preferred El Capitan talking with us and the other couple about where we were staying and what foodie priorities to get to during our stay. And God put on a sunset show for us, and it was neat to see the other ships in the bay -- from cargo ferries to private yachts to sailboats from all over to a pair of cruise ships in Port. Now I said I'd talk on our communication snafu with the owner -- with our booking there were pretty specific instructions on where to park and where to go. Which we endeavored to follow when we arrived, early, bearing in mind the "if you're late we leave without you, no refunds" cautionary language. We messaged that we were there, that we knew we were early, and where we were, by the gatehouse as instructed. Guard brought us in to where they said we would be met by the team from Sail San Juan Bay, and by then we had a conflicting location message. As we tried to follow orders, we received another message sending us back towards where we had been. I was put off by it, and all the more in contrast to another excursion I did the next day with incredibly clear info and texts to the entire group including the person actually taking point on the group, even though the meeting point was similarly at a public unmanned location. So yeah, 100% go on the sailboat, and enjoy the time on the bay... but follow initial instructions and if you can avoid contact with the owner, do so.

They gave us instructions for snorkeling, and helped everyone to securely fasten their gear. We stopped at three spots for snorkeling. The first one were very close to Icacos Island, which was deliberately in a shallow area, so first time snorkelers like me can get some practice before going into deeper waters. The other two spots we stopped were in the middle of the ocean, among the reefs and vast expanse of the Caribbean Sea. Herbert, an experienced diver that guided our tour, dove down and flipped lots of rocks and caught little star fish, urchins, shrimps, crabs and other interesting creatures for us to see. It was amazing, and something I couldn't have done if I were on my own. Snorkeling is such an easy sport, even though I've only swan in water parks before, I find it easy to swim the sea with no problem. Lunch was prepared by them, with cold cuts, cheese and sandwich bread. I'm not a fan of these type of food, but I didn't expect hand pulled noodles in the middle of the sea either. Food was not the point of this trip anyway. If you don't like these food, you can always bring snacks and just put them in the cabin downstairs. In the end, we sailed by this small piece of land and saw iguanas climbing up the trees. It was really nice. I learned about this tour rather late, so I didn't meet the book online window (at least 12 hours ahead), had to call in and make reservation. I would recommend everyone taking advantage of their online booking system, it is real-time and you get $10 off.

I though this would be a great bonding experience between us. I searched for what was available in San Juan... every where I searched I got the same answer... Capt Juan Carlos Torruella of Extreme Fishing PR. I emailed him for dates and rates, he was fast to respond and easy to schedule. Nothing complicated as easy as it should be. We scheduled a 4hr (2 to 6pm) trip. The day could have not been more perfect. As we departed on our trip the Captain was more than helpful in explaining what we should expect. He answered all our questions and made my kid feel safe and entertained. 7 year olds can get bored easily... NOT TODAY he was excited, happy and wanting more... needless to say me too. The Tally: My kid got 9 Tarpon and 3 Robalo I got 4 and 1 Total 13 Tarpon / 4 Robalo I can't thank Juan Carlos Torruella for the great experience!! 5 Stars is not enough... Our tour fell through with another company so we opted into just hanging around the doc and watching the boats. A very nice man approached us who worked for Y Sailing and asked if there was anything he could help us with. We explained to him that our plans fell through with another company but that we really wanted to sail. So the really nice gentleman stopped what he was doing and took us on a tour and actually taught my husband how to sail ! It was amazing !! It was one of the highlights of my trip ...truly an unforgettable experience. After we sailed the gentleman dropped us off at a local restaurant and the food was delicious!!
