Toni & Guy is situated on Whitechapel, opposite the Met Quarter. It is a very smart and modern…read moreplace which is clean, tidy, bright and airy. The staff are very welcoming when you enter the building and do actually seem happy to help. I had my hair cut here once and the stylist and apprentice really went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable and happy. When my hair was washed I was also given a head massage which was absolutely amazing. I was provided with a drink and a magazine whilst I was there. The stylist was excellent. She actually listened to what I wanted and took her time doing the cut, rather than giving the impression that she was rushing to get me done and out of there, as I have often felt in other salons. When my cut was expertly dried I was extremely happy with the result, it was exactly what I wanted and actually even better than the picture I had shown her. Toni & Guy is more expensive than many city centre salons but it is worth it for a treat. You do really feel that you are receiving the best service and the staff actually care about their customers.

As famous as it is, this branch in Whitechapel meets all their high standards with friendly, welcoming and confident staff to assist you. There is a very professional approach as you would imagine for a salon of this class. The only catch is that prices are expensive so you are gambling on a perfect service and hoping that you'll leave with a big smile on your face. I've not been here to use any of their services but by word of mouth, I have heard so many excellent remarks about this particular studio. Staff were extremely helpful when I made enquiries about their hair services, however my hair is so simple that I never need anything special doing. Perhaps I could do with some highlighting in the future! At least Toni & Guy is a place I could probably trust.

Voodou apparently prides itself as a colouring centre - maybe if they gave the staff colouring-in…read morebooks they'd be right. I booked myself in here many years ago with the director, assuming that I'd get a professional hairdo and it would be worth the money. How wrong could I be. I turned up in the morning to find my intended stylist hungover and feeling like death, threatening to vomit over my head at any moment. She got through the colour consultation ok, although I had a vague feeling she wasn't really paying attention, and, like you sometimes sense with hairdressers, they've got their own ideas about what they're going to do to your hair. As the foils were prepared and the dye mixed, her friend came in and was promptly sat next to me so they could relive every moment of the previous night and discuss in minute detail the most insignificant things. It was at this point I felt like asking her to hand over the dye and let me do it myself. However, I persevered, and after a while my colour was on and I was left in relative peace with some magazines. After my hair was washed, I started to wonder what colour she'd actually dyed it. I said nothing though, and watched as this green she-devil hacked chunks of my hair off, so the bits that actually looked highlighted were now no more than tufts. Once she had blowdried it, she staggered back, looking impressed with herself, and explaining how the three different colours really stood out in the light. I could only gaze in disbelief. She had dyed it exactly the same colour as my own hair. I'm never good in these situations and thought maybe I was a bit biased because she was making such a show of feeling rough. I ended up leaving the shop with a bag of products and a bill of around £100 (bearing in mind this was more than 6 years ago). The first friend I saw didn't notice the colour was different, neither did the 5th, 10th or my mum. So I ended up going back and asking for it to be re-done. Originally I went to the Bold Street shop as I explained I didn't want that woman near my head again, but the camp guy behind the desk told me it was a lovely colour (I know - I was born with it!) and if I had a problem I had to go back to her. When I plucked up the courage to face her again, she agreed to re-do my colour for me, and then proceeded to dye the sample strip (your fringe, crown and parting) blonde. I didn't go back again.

As I've been going here for year the staff recognise me and are very friendly when I enter the salon. The stylist I use will often shout hello and tell me she wont be long. When she's ready she takes my coat and any shopping bags I inevitably have with me, and takes me over to a chair. She then takes time to discuss what I want, look at photos and make suggestions if necessary. The trainee washes your hair for the stylist. This is usually really nice as they give you a head massage and use shampoos and conditioners which smell divine. They then take you back to the chair and offer you a selection of drinks - lager, red wine, white wine, tea, coffee, cappuccino, hot chocolate and mineral water. They also bring over some magazines if you want them. The stylist always takes her time to ensure she knows what I want and then carries out the cut expertly whilst chatting to me. She has often rescued my hair when I've bleached the life out of it, which has happened several times. Voodou offer student discount, they also have a loyalty card scheme which entitles you to a free haircut once you have collected 8 stamps on your card. They offer half price colouring on Thursday and Saturday which can work out really cheap. They also offer a £10 voucher for all new customers, or those who have not visited Voodou in the past 12 months. There is also a corporate discount card scheme which entitle you to 20% off. They offer a huge range of prices for cuts, different types of colouring, hair up styles, perms, relaxing treatments and conditioning treatments. You can choose a level of stylist to match your budget. This is an excellent salon. I never fail to come out here fully satisfied, cheered up and happy.

They deal in human hair extensions and all the trimmings (glue, clips, treatments etc) as well as hair dyes, hair accessories.....basically it's a man's idea of hell. I love it because a) I used to be a hairdresser and I can stock up on my bits and bobs and b) it's one of the only places that stocks Directions hair colours, which are the dyes that come in all sorts of wacky hues. No Born Blondes here, thank you very much! Though not as cheap as wholesale or bargain basements, they are pretty good and their stock is high quality, which is always good to know when you're putting it on your head!
