First of all, I love that the staff take an interest in the welfare of the animals in front of the cafe... One lady went out to stop duck violence before it turned into sexual assault. She is my hero. Seriously.
But back to the food... I stopped here for coffee and a place to read my book, while I was waiting for a coach, full of my students, to pull up. Don't judge... there were no spare seats on the coach out to Langdale for their activities and I would have been depriving a student of a chance to scramble ghylls. I went in for an Americano, but I was drawn in by the cakes on display. I considered the blueberry scone as I have had it before and can vouch that it is spectacular and it doesn't seem quite as indulgent, but I went for the Cherry Pie.
Yes, Cherry Pie. 1) I don't think I have seen Cherry Pie as an option anywhere in Europe and 2) it just looked gorgeous, even though it was a square slice. The crust was browned nicely and was not too tough or too thick. Equally as important... no soggy bottom! I think that there was no soggy bottom because the filling was rather thick, but it had a nice balance of sweetness and tartness. My only criticism... a few more cherries in the slice would have been lovely, but even that didn't stop me from devouring it. read more
