Looking back, it all was a fine experience. The senseis and the students here are kind and respectful. Also friendly. There are after training and holiday get togethers that offer a chance to build new friendships. Starting when I was in my 30s, at 78 I still train twice a week. It is my happy place, where I can go to drop whatever problems or issues are pressing on me. And the benefits of those years of training are amazing. I've been able to maintain my weight, have excellent balance, and of course, feel a bit more confident about getting myself safely out of a bad situation. But, as I also learned from training, it's even better not to get into those bad situations in the first place. I'm so glad I did my 30 something year old self the grand favor of checking out this dojo, liking what I saw, and engaging.

Honestly, overall I was looking for a fun & friendly environment where I can get state of the art instruction and help me grow both as an athlete and as someone who loves the sport. Jay's gym has it all, and I guarantee you this place will be a perfect fit for you whether you are a hobbyist or an elite competitor looking for some tough rolls, or if you are looking for a family friendly environment to train for you & your loved ones. Absolutely 100% recommend this place, and thank you Jay Pages for being so welcoming and accommodating! P.S. The facility is AWESOME!!!

The atmosphere gives more of a family feel than just a business feel. Jay, the team, and the rest of the coaches treat you as if you are blood related. It's always a good vibe here and so much more to learn as well as many opportunities this gym has to offer from Belt advancements to sponsorships to competitions and more! Not only does this place give a family feel to the environment, but the people you train with are awesome as well! If you are new, you can join the beginners class. But even if you want more of a challenge and are new, you will be taught in hard sparring as well. I've made some friends in this school as well. If y'all want to learn the martial arts as well as grow within this community, this is definitely the place to go to.

Master Mullis is absolutely amazing and truly cares about each of his students. We can't speak highly enough about AKF.

I waited TWO years before writing this review. Our journey…read morewith AKF Blackbelt Academy began with something no parent ever wants to experience. My son transferred to Tavan Elementary School in the Scottsdale school district mid-year during the 4th grade. On his second day at school, he was attacked from behind with a full-on chokehold by very large student he did not know. He came home with broken skin from fingernail marks, bruising, and red handprints completely around his neck. And what did the school administration do about it? NOTHING! Their excuse? The attacker was "disadvantaged" and "has it rough at home." I was furious. I started searching for a martial arts school that could teach my son (a child who wasn't naturally athletic) self-defense skills. After a lot of research and a recommendation from a friend, we decided to try AKF Blackbelt Academy. The school is led by Grand Master Tim Mullis, who has over 40 years of experience teaching Kyuki-Do, a mixed martial art that blends techniques from Karate, Taekwondo, Judo, and Hapkido. This style is incredibly effective because it teaches students how to defend themselves both standing and on the ground. (BTW: ground fighting skills are important because 80% of street fights end up being fought on the ground.) Two years later, it's like someone waved a magic wand over my son. My once non-athletic child has become a strong, confident young man. He's physically fit, disciplined, respectful, focused in school, and bully-proof. His grades have improved, his posture and confidence have completely changed, and most importantly-- he loves going to karate class. If you live in the Arcadia, East Phoenix, or Old Town Scottsdale area and are looking for a place that not only teaches self-defense but also builds character, confidence, and resilience, this place gets my highest recommendation.

The black belts and even some of the up and coming lower ranked students are always coaching the younger less experienced students. Everyone is amazing! In addition, they offer sparing events where anyone that is belted and has the gear can step in and spar with anyone else. This is where a lot of the Student Coaching comes in PLUS the sparing events are free AND they offer them at both locations at different times and anyone from either location can attend and participate. If you want to get your child OR yourself into the martial arts, I recommend you try this place!

Terrible people and Business. They should be ashamed of themselves. A business that you would think…read morewould be operating with integrity for the community and youth that goes into their doors in hindsight is the complete opposite and a total money grab and unlawful contracts that they will literally write off to collections within 30 days. My wife and I took our boys here after they knocked on my door and gave us a flyer for a free class... first off it was a terrible layout & misguided direction throughout the entire class. We said well maybe it was just that class and we would explore letting our boys give it a try as they still had fun but a couple weeks after I was unfortunately apart of a company wide layoff and we had to relocate and do not even live in AZ any longer and the kicker, MY KIDS NEVER ATTENDED A SINGLE CLASS/SESSION. After trying to let them know of this unfortunate life event they didn't bat an eye or care at all, they literally laughed and said you will have to pay in full and if not you will be sent to collections which did happen all before the actual start date my kids were suppose to start. So I lost my job and took a massive hit to my credit and now have a $2,000+ debt for a service that was never provided. Pathetic excuse of a business and for people working with kids daily I would never allow my children to be associating with people that lack any morals, integrity and only see kids as a dollar sign. Stay Away. There are many other dojos and businesses to take your kids where the people actually care for their kids and community!
