In the style of my Yelp friend Brian : It was way too fast and Way too final. (Edited version as the earlier was way too long and dreary...and more about the dog than the clinic). Several weeks ago we had to have our beloved Border collie, Geordie, put to sleep. She would have been 16 in December. For the past year the spouse and I had argued over whether it was "time" despite the fact that she's been totally deaf for several years (that really didn't matter), going progressively blind and was progressively incontinent. She could not navigate stairs in the past year. Eventually, there came a time when we both agreed it was "time". Geordie took a tumble into a stairwell in our house and dropped about 3 feet. She was fine but shaken. We were shaken. If she had broken a bone she would have suffered until we could have gotten her to the vet (and this place has an emergency line ) and then we'd have been forced to put her to sleep. (Look, I can't spell euthanized so I am using an euphemism instead but I grew up on a farm and am well versed in death of animals and pets of all sorts and I do know "sleep" means dead in this case). So, I made the date. The day came...me, the spouse and kids went to the clinic. The clinic staff made sure we had the last appointment of the day although there seemed to be an ungodly number of stragglers who seemed to be hanging around...we saw Dr. Hilary Petit. She has Border collies too. She put Geordie's mom to "sleep" a couple of years ago. We got in the room and felt compelled to "explain why". She listened for a few minutes to our fumbling attempts to explain and then stopped us. She told us, "Listen, folks. This dog is beautiful. She is nearly 16 years old and I can tell you that MOST dogs do not make it this long. Her lasting this long and in such beautiful condition is a testament to your treatment and love of her. But she is failing and you are doing the right thing. You don't need to say another word to me about why this is necessary." We sighed with relief. We all held onto Geordie as she squirmed on the table. Normally docile, but increasingly agitated in her old age, she fought the shot. That made it hard. Finally she relaxed. I held her head in my hands and looked into her eyes, talking to her the whole time. We all cried so hard it made me think I had made the wrong decision to have the kids watch. We could not stop crying. I heard the laughter in the waiting room stop. I wanted thekids to know that owning pets is for life and life ends and you can't just go get a pet without thinking that you have to be there for them even in the end. Somehow we made our way to the car and loaded Geordie inside, rolled in a blanket. Dead dogs are awkward to carry. Their heads flop. We buried her at home in a grave my husband had dug out the day before. We cried all day. We made our own headstone for her. I think the total cost of the "shot" was about $40. The vet's words were priceless and we hang onto them to assure ourselves we did "the right thing". Cremation would have cost about $200-300 dollars. As an aside, when we lived in Barrow, Gatwick, our cat , got deathly sick, this clinic sent medication to us without having seen Gatwick, knowing there were no vets in Barrow. Not many places do that. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable here and they answer questions and help make common sense decisions about everyday things, not just life and death matters. Anyways...it was way too fast and way too final. But it's over. RIP Geordie 12/23/93 to 8/22/09 Thanks Dr. Petit and staff.

My cat had cancer and was nearing the end of his time. We had an appointment scheduled for Friday but he took a turn and I knew he wouldn't make it so we spent the entire day with him and brought him in in the evening. Over the phone I was quoted $195. I brought $300 with me, all I have until my next paycheck. They asked if I wanted ashes back and I desperately did but it would've taken the price to $343. I told them I only had $300 and they offered to take off the ashes and do a paw print or a nose print. I agreed on a nose print and it took the final price to $266. All I wanted was to bring my baby back home with me. They did make the experience as nice as they could for both of us. I just wish the prices weren't so high. It could have been worse though - my regular vet wanted to charge about $588 for it. Which would've included a $100 exam, $160 for the procedure, and the remaining cost for cremation and a paw print and none of it was optional. People should be able to take their pets ashes home. I wish they would've at least worked with me a little on it, maybe take my $300 and have me pay the rest when I come back or find a way to make it $300. I was only $43 short. It's been such a rough year and especially a rough December. My good friend passed away two weeks before Christmas, my sisters house burned down, the day after Christmas I find out my cat is nearing the end of his life, and on top of helping replace things for my sister and helping take care of them it was just the holidays so money is already tight enough. It felt like I failed a little bit hearing I was only $43 short from taking my baby's ashes home.

They were incredibly helpful over the phone, walking us through next steps and using their waitlist call-back system, which was such a game changer. We were able to call, explain our dog's injury, and then wait comfortably at home until they called us to head in. Once we arrived, we were seen within about 15 minutes, and the entire visit took around 30 minutes total, so efficient and stress-free. The staff and doctor were so kind, calm, and reassuring, which made a stressful situation feel completely manageable. You can tell they genuinely care about both pets and their owners. On top of the excellent care, the ambience is beautiful and cozy, welcoming space with a warmly lit fireplace that feels homey yet modern. It honestly doesn't feel like a typical vet office at all. 10/10 would recommend Midnight Sun Animal Hospital to anyone looking for compassionate, efficient, and high-quality veterinary care. I will say, we did wait quite a long time, but I'm willing to wait for better care than some of the other clinics I've been to. AK TLC Kennels is behind Builders Bargains on the Parks Hwy near Trunk Rd…read more We have 2 dogs (both husky rott mixes) that LOVE going to the kennel here. (Our previous 2 dogs loved going here too as they have a "geriatric" room that is quieter and sectioned off from the main part of the kennel so it's a bit quieter for the older dogs). The runs are good sized, we keep our 2 dogs together in 1 run, as many people do. They get beds that are raised up off the floor, and blankets. I think they will also give them toys to have in the run, but we have 1 that will ingest stuff like that so we skip that part. Debbie and her staff are great with the dogs and are always happy to see them when they arrive. They offer grooming and also have a separate room for boarding cats. One of my dogs has a thing about having his toes touched, so we rarely get to trim his nails at home. We've tried at the vets office too, but someone is usually holding him down and there is a lot of flailing and almost no nail trimming. I asked TLC to trim his nails several trips ago and they said he LOVES it when they do it and has no issues, so now that is part of his trip to the kennel as well. Dogs are taken out to several fenced play yards a few times a day. Mine always come home exhausted. I love TLC Kennel and wouldn't take my dogs (my children) anywhere else.

Because he was at the end stage of his life, they took special care of him, keeping him basically on one on one care. He passed while I was on vacation. TLC contacted me immediately, and were so amazingly compassionate, and offered to take him to cremation place of no extra cost. Recently, my ridgeback, Ozzie was at TLC while I was in Europe, and they rushed him to emergency vets, due to unforeseen emergency related to his stomach constricting, resulting in a life or death situation. It was recognized immediately, and he was immediately taken vet. His life threatening condition ended well thank you to TLC!! They kept Ozzie in cuddle room after his surgery the rest of his stay, and was totally pampered. TLC are passionate about caring for your pet for their individual needs, and very knowledgeable related to safety. Highly recommend TLC!! You know your in a great Kennel when you arrive, and your pets are eager to be there, instead of, oh no Mom, your leaving me, as your are trying to coach them inside. My 2 dogs love being there. That makes it so much more reassuring leaving them behind.
