Lounge lobby area
Tiffany D.

Old fashioned style and yet, mixed with modern decor. Room was a bit small for two people. There was no desk table nor chair. I like the lobby living lounge area. Coffee and tea is adorned. Ice and fridge for public usage is available on the side. Location is prime and convenient here. Digital key check in at this time and downloading an app is needed. One has to call to get into the entrance door, which may be a problem if it's late night hours checking in time. I had a nice stay here.

Run away, don't stay here. I just had the worse hospitality experience of my life. I called the day before given they said they would cancel our reservation given a card issue. Since it was after business hours I had to wait until the next day (Friday) the day I was traveling, to call the bank. When I called my bank they stated absolutely No charges have been attempted by Washington Square Inn. This was my first warning sign from the universe to run and not stay here, but given the Memorial Day weekend, our first time in San Francisco, our plane had just landed, we were concerned there wouldn't be other hotel availability so we proceeded to try to stay here. The Inn had indicated to us someone will be at the desk to help us check in on our arrival. There is no one at the front desk to check you in or assist you or welcome you to your stay. It's beyond flabbergasting and confusing. Horrible customer service and no clear specifications on the website about the electronic self check in process. No e-mail telling me I must download and app to get into the room, I had to hear this information from another guest at the Inn. When we got to the Inn, the front door was locked, and it took over an hour to get checked into our room. I asked them to run our card. They kept telling me that my card didn't work. When I called my bank to check what happened they said absolutely no charge had been made or attempted. It was not until we arrive on site were we able to get them to correct their computer malfunction. The locals appeared to be un-phased by the self-check in process, which was equally concerning they put up with such mistreatment. Then when we got to the room, the towels were dirty, the pillows were lumpy, and there is no deadbolt on the door to keep you safe from some random person entering your room. The neighborhood gave off shady vibes. (someone outside our window). I am from Albuquerque so this is saying a lot. The Inn Keepers were so discourteous, when we reserved the room for 3 guest there was only 2 towels. When I asked for another towel. They told me to go get it myself. When I gave them feedback they knew 3 of us were coming so how come they didn't provide for us comforting accommodations with 3 towels. They tried to gaslight us and say that was not in our reservation. I have e-mails confirming 2 adults and 1 child. Why would I lie? again I am a doctor I have no reason to lie. I asked how they will make this up to us and they gave me no good response. How rude of them to not think of my child as a guest. Charging us $240 a night, for them to do absolutely nothing for you. Outrageous and unheard of. My experience continues to get worse. The shower started leaking. We didn't even touch it and it start leaking all kinds of water. When I tried to turn it off, it wouldn't turn off or on. MY original plan was to get into the Inn, rest take a nap, eat dinner, then get ready to go to a concert, but that was not able to happen given the un-working shower, the dirty towels, and the fact it took over an hour to get into our room. How do you expect anyone to stay at a place without a working shower? I asked them to work with us and give us a discount given the distress they have caused us. And they won't. In fact they decided to steal our money and charge us for the room. As I went to the concert I left my husband in charge of finding us new accommodations as I cant stay at a place for $240 a night without a working shower. We left immediately after the shower fiasco, as you cannot expect me to stay in a place without a working shower. I was willing to work with them to pay for the time we spent in the room, as I do not think its fair they are charging us the full cost given their discourtesy, shady business practices and lack of hospitality. The management seams unable to work with us. Any other hotel would reimburse you for the discomfort cause, but they decided to steal my money and stress me out instead. I have never been more stressed out in my entire life when trying to stay at a hotel.

Sheets, blankets, pillows all generally very old and in poor condition.

Really kitschy and interesting little bed and breakfast. It's an mix since they have something like 15-20 rooms so larger than a cozy bed and breakfast. However the mismatched decorations and cramped interior are a cross between a crazy aunt's house and an antiques roadshow episode. When you walk in the hotel it feels like you're walking into someone's living room - there's a large dining room decked out with china right by the front desk where people who have communal breakfast can dine. The rooms are good sized and come with pretty nice amenities. Decorations are just as wild and kitschy as the lobby would suggest. They do not have a microwave or minifridge, but do have bottles of water and the bathroom toiletries are extremely well stocked. They bring you breakfast to your room, included in the price, as well if you order ahead. Wine and cheese in the afternoon is also a nice touch. The rooms are severely lacking in outlets, however. I had trouble finding convenient places to charge my electronics. Big problem that there is absolutely NO soundproofing. I could hear someone snoring across the hall as if they were in the room with me, and waking up to the cleaning staff vacuuming and talking was very disconcerting. I think Washington Square Inn would be a really cute concept if the maintenance and cleanliness was a little better. I get the antique European look they're going for but that was no excuse for very large stains on the carpets, couch and seat padding in the rooms. Everything in the room just felt extremely dusty, carelessly kept, and very run down. The sheets and comforter looked visibly old and grimy and had holes in some spots, as did the bed canopy curtain, which was pretty gross. No central air in the rooms and the ceiling fan was extremely dusty. Every time I sat on something soft or cushioned I almost expect a flock of moths to spring up from under the cloth. All rooms are on the second or third floor and there is no elevator - stairs only.

Simple room, queen bed and bathroom/shower. Room was clean.

Nice inn, perfect location! Within walking distance to everything In North Beach and to Chinatown. Rooms are definitely small, very simple but you can't beat the location. Rooms were clean, very quiet, some noise on the street from people walking by but nothing outrageous. Very easy checkin/checkout using the app Open Key. Definitely staying again so we can just walk everywhere and not worry about having to take taxi/Uber. Plenty of stuff to do in that area, Washington Square park right across the street.

Location, location, location. Is that the not-so-secret secret to a great B&B in the city? Just find a decent plot of real estate, build it, and hope that they will come? That's what some people think, but not Maria and Daniel, the owners of this quaint streetcorner comfort zone on Washington Square in the heart of San Francisco's historic North Beach neighborhood (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/5q7JJm2tyrua-qZArgCF-A?select=5cpjkMelyx2kkg3MFtMtpA). It's within easy walking distance to fine food spots and shops on Columbus Ave. (as well as Graffeo Coffee Roasters). Mama's Cafe is next door, as is the photogenic St. Peter and Paul Cathedral (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/5q7JJm2tyrua-qZArgCF-A?select=RO8ythyd_Dib-PeBwcjgNQ). And if you walk up Filbert Street past some exceptionally well-maintained rowhouses (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/5q7JJm2tyrua-qZArgCF-A?select=02X2mJGwfZB1jyUzC7GBhQ), you can enjoy the great views and atmosphere from atop Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower. Given the plethora and places to see and pure pleasures to be had within a single, square mile radius, you might forgive the proprietors here for taking it easy, for letting things slide, content that their guests would accept it. But that's just not the case here. The inn is well run - clean, quiet, courteous, but without being overly cute or intrusive of patrons who don't want the red carpet treatment. They serve evening wine and snacks and offer breakfast downstairs or delivered right to your door each morning. We opted for the dine-in option and savored our croissants and coffee while looking out the window and enjoying the fresh late September air. The staff at the front desk were extremely knowledgeable and friendly, they set us up with parking, stored our bags while we walked around the city after checking out, and in general made us feel temporarily at home. There is lovely artwork on the walls that is worth a second look. It's not your run-of-the-mill, Thomas Kincaid sort of schlock (sorry, "Painter of Light" fans!) It's actual art collected and displayed for guests to enjoy. If you are thinking about a short stay in the city and want a great advanced base camp for exploring North Beach, the Embarcadero, Russian Hill, the Financial District, Chinatown, etc., I'd recommend the Washington Square Inn highly. It's like being a part of the neighborhood for a few blissful days before you have to pack up and move on.

An incredible bed and breakfast style inn that really was our salvation one night. The whole reason we stayed here was a long, strange story. We were on our way moving from Arizona to Seattle, making stops along the journey. Of course, we were in our dying car without a working radiator fan. Needless to say, we needed to keep moving to keep air in the car and with the hills, traffic lights, and poor SF drivers, we didn't have long before you could hear the oil bubbling over. So we pulled into in a parking lot, looked at each other and said, "This is where we start walking." Grabbed some essentials to strap to our backs and just started walking without a destination or a plan. Eventually we ended up in this park. We were tired, hungry and dirty. Suddenly, I saw the sign that said "Washington Square Inn". We thought it must be an omen considering our final destination was Washington. Before we knew it, we had a beautiful room for an incredible price, a list of tons of great restaurants within a block, a place nearby to keep the car overnight, an invite to wine and cheese that night, and the knowledge that we had a full breakfast in the morning. We were overwhelmed by their hospitality. I would stay here again whenever I'm in town simply because of their kindness, but also because of the great rates and location.

I was in town from Sept 23-25. I normally would not have chosen a B&B but between the America Cup and the Oracle convention hotel rooms where scare or outrageously priced (a motel was going for close to $200 a night). Luckily for me I was able book a room at this B&B. The B&B was very clean and nicely furnished. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Bellman promptly came out to get my luggage and carried it up to my room (good thing since my room was up a steep flight of stairs). I booked the cheapest room (room 14) since i was traveling alone I really didn't need a bigger room. The room was a decent size for one person but could be a little tight for two (my husband and I could make do but other couples may think it is too small especially if you have a lot of luggage). Since this was the cheapest room the bathroom (bathroom are still private) was across the hallway. I was apprehensive at first but it wasn't as big an inconvenience as I thought. The locations can't be beat. Near multiple restaurants, bars and walking distance to many attractions. I felt very safe staying here (as a single traveler that's important). Breakfast was satisfying and the wine and snacks in the afternoon was great (they had a red and white Rutherford and some Italian wines). Please read the website carefully it trying to decide to stay here. The owners are upfront with all their information and did not feel mislead. Next time i go back to San Francisco I'll be sure to stay here again.

The check-in process was smooth. The front desk was very helpful in getting us in and filling out a card authorization form. We were surprised by the valet price however - $90 is definitely high. There is no self parking but the prices for the lots nearby are just as high, if not higher for overnight. We really enjoyed our room. It is definitely not the most spacious but felt quite luxurious. We booked a double queen room and were placed in Rm 920. There was limited walking space around the ends of the beds and desk. There was a beautiful view of the courtyard and city. I love that the room was very well-lit. There is ambient lighting and brighter lights you can turn on next to the beds. My friends and I loved the window that separated the bathroom from the sleeping space. It was quite comical and made getting ready for a night out very fun. There blinds for both the bathroom window and outside window were motorized which was a nice touch. The beds were pretty comfortable but nothing too special - I appreciate them having a bunch of pillows. The mini fridge and coffee bar felt pretty luxe and were much fancier than those are other hotels I've stayed at. There were plenty of outlets throughout the room and next to the beds. The whole vibe of the hotel feels very sleek and modern. The hallways are lit with a ambient blue. The inside of the elevators are themed which is super cute for pics. The gym is very nice too, loaded with more than your typical treadmill and elliptical. The lobby felt clean and had little robot things scooting around that apparently are used for room service. I would definitely stay here again so I can explore what I didn't get to see on my short stay!

The Omni is a short walk to Chinatown and a 15-20 minute walk to North Beach where you can dine on some excellent fine Italian food. Our room was clean, well stocked by housekeeping, and everything worked to perfection. If you want a microwave or a refrigerator, that would be an extra charge. There is a cozy bar if you want to decompress after work or a long day of touring around. The Omni was not cheap but worth every penny of it. However, from the very beginning to end ranged from confusion, annoyance, to plain nightmare. The check in process was confusing and and cumbersome. I was given no check in information, and there was no front desk. The intercom at the front door did not even work, and I had to call their actual "front desk" who apparently said they did not have my information on file and made me go through these annoying steps just to find my hotel room key in a lock box. The most frustrating and nightmarish experience came the next day when I lost the hotel room key (a physical key). I called the "front desk" several times but received no answer then finally got one after about 10 minutes. When I told the man at the "front desk," he told that he would have to speak to the housekeeper. After waiting for another 10 minutes, he informed me that I would be getting fined $200 for the lost room key, which is plain ridiculous, since they didn't have a replacement key (other than the housekeeper's key). I understand a $25 or $50 fee for a lost key but $200 for a freaking key???! After waiting for about 40 minutes total, he finally walked over with my replacement key and begged me not to lose it since that would mean the housekeeper can't even get in (how laughable). What's worse was that the other guests were able to use their phone or a passcode to get in since all the room had e-locks. When I asked the man at the "front desk" why I needed a physical key, he said that not all of the e-locks were working--including the one for my room. What a load BS. A horribly dingy hotel that can't even get its most basic sh*t together. Stay at this incompetently run hotel at your own risk or better yet find much better options.

Amazing Service. Good Value. Butler Service…read more I came to the Bay Area for a relative's 80th birthday and booked The St. Regis because it was the only Forbes Five-Star rated hotel in San Francisco. I'm usually hesitant to stay at American hotel chains' "luxury products" because they often just feel like Marriotts with nicer tile (most new Ritz-Carltons, for example). I found the St. Regis to actually offer the kind of luxury service that is often missing in American hotels. I arrived fairly early, around 11:00 a.m., and the staff were incredibly friendly, accommodating both an early check-in and late check-out, along with a room upgrade. Prior to this stay, I didn't really understand the purpose of butler service, but they were kind enough to gift-wrap the presents for the birthday party I was attending while I booked a massage and walked around the city. The spa at the St. Regis is fairly large, with an indoor heated pool (well designed), a gender-separated steam room (out of order during my visit), and a sauna. I will say the spa could use an expansion or renovation. The "relaxation room" felt a bit like a repurposed salt room, and the men's lounge basically just had tea and snacks. The massage itself was great, and everyone there was extremely friendly. What really impressed me was the service. I casually asked whether they had bath salts available for use in my room, and within 30 minutes of leaving the spa, bath salts, bubble bath, and bottled water were delivered to my room without my needing to make a special request. Great attention to detail. I walked through the gym and it seemed large enough for a full circuit workout, with plenty of equipment. I do wish the hotel had more dedicated lobby or guest lounge areas. The check-in area, bar, and restaurant all seemed to blend together into one shared space, which felt fairly busy in the evening when non-guests came in for happy hour. The bar was nice but honestly expensive and not especially memorable. I was a bit surprised by some of the clientele (there were what I assumed to be a couple "working ladies" at the bar who I wonder if their services were less than the cost of breakfast in hindsight), though very friendly occasionally felt slightly out of sync with the otherwise polished atmosphere of the hotel. I didn't try the restaurant for dinner. The hotel does offer a complimentary car service around the local area, though unfortunately it was booked when I needed it. Breakfast was expensive, easily over $100 per person for a fairly normal order, but it was very tasty. The Eggs Benedict were perfectly cooked and included truffle, which was fantastic. The room was clean and comfortable. I do think it could have used a deeper scrub, though I admit my standards may be skewed by an exceptional housekeeper at home. There was also a slight musty odor. It was not on the level of a room at an average Belmond property or the former Mandarin Oriental Miami, but it was spacious and perfectly comfortable for one person. I'm not entirely sure whether St. Regis considers itself directly competitive with those brands. In summary, the service is what makes this hotel worthy of five stars. They seem genuinely happy to accommodate nearly anything you might need or even casually mention wanting. Personally, I find San Francisco itself dirty, stressful, expensive, and rough around the edges, so having a hotel that felt calm, polished, and attentive made a huge difference in my trip.

It was SF restaurant week so we ordered the $90 3 course meal for dinner at the hotel restaurant Astra. We ordered the duck cannoli (ok tasting but the duck is cold), braised short rib (very good! Love the polenta) and the brussel sprouts (menu said it was gremoleta/garlic/parmesan flavor but it ended up being gochujang flavor and it was overly sauced). Was not a huge fan. The hotel is dog friendly. They give you a bed and bowl and treats. The pet fee is steep at $200 per stay. There is the Yerba Buena gardens across the street (5 minute walk) to take your dog out. The hotel used to be quite a few other properties, so while they may have decorated it, it's not the luxurious experience we've had at other hotels. The views are to die for, we had a room that spanned windows from Golden Gate to Bay Bridge, it was amazing being on the 45th floor and seeing the night sky and morning sunrise. The property doesn't really have a real lobby, spa, and the restaurant is average, as in the quality of the food was just not top notch, and they have access to the best ingredients. They only have two elevators and are quite slow, at a busy time this can be quite annoying. The room itself was small, no real furniture, would have been nice to have a sofa and table with two chairs. There was no dresser. The bathroom was great for one, but small for two. The shower didn't have a bench, no his or her's sinks. The bed when we got into it was super soft and not supportive, when we called they did something really odd and put a board on the mattress and then a topper. I guess they have a guest that asks for this. Why didn't the service people know they have a firm version of the mattress topper they could have switched for us. We didn't have the best sleep. Again, usually the Four Seasons beds are amazing. While this property doesn't charge regular Four Seasons prices, it also doesn't deliver the experience and it would be a shame if the brand started doing this.
