Wasatch Lake... I'd never heard of it. We live on the other side of the state and I'm what you'd call an "indoor girl" for the most part, so I'm not really well-versed on wilderness accommodations. But we split a cabin here for a weekend with three other couples for a wedding that our friends had at the lodge on the property, because it sure beat driving the twisting hilly half-hour back to Cloverdale. I think the grand total was around $575 for the whole weekend.
It ended up being a pretty great time. Our cabin (#3) was on the rustic side, but it was nice and well-maintained. Could use some new carpeting - the indoor/outdoor stuff has seen much better days. The cabins are fully stocked with pots and pans, and a few stray mugs and glasses, but definitely bring your own groceries, silverware and plates (we went with disposable stuff). If you forget anything, it's kind of a long way to the next town. This place is secluded like no other.
Oh, and a lot of the citified people were put off by the smell of the well water, but if you're used to it, you probably won't even notice. I'd still suggest bringing some bottled water.
Like Matthew, we stayed here during a particularly steamy August heat wave, and while the living room and kitchen were comfortable, the power of the window A/C unit did not extend into the bedrooms. It was pretty toasty in there, even with a large fan going on full blast. I'd suggest bringing another fan to get a good cross-breeze going.
The plus side of the room and the giant fan was that we could barely hear the noise of our friends whooping it up in the living room at 2 in the morning. And I should mention that "whooping it up" for a bunch of 30-something away from the kids for two nights is really just a matter of talking kind of loudly, sipping on craft beer and eating junk food.
The real whooping happened at the lodge Saturday night. The original plan was to have the wedding by the lake and then have the reception in the lodge. But Mother Nature was all like, "Ain't nobody got time for that" and busted out a killer rainstorm. The men in the wedding party sprang into action to move the ceremony indoors and the WL staff followed suit. While most of the aspects of the lodge rental is DIY, the unprecedented help from the staff was invaluable. They all seemed extremely nice and laid-back. As I understand it, this is slightly different than the vibe of the previous caretakers.
The lodge is, not all that surprisingly, decorated with a multitude of taxidermed deer, moose, elk, and even some African plains creatures and a freaking humongous polar bear. It's worth mentioning because it worked with our friends' rustic woods wedding theme, but may not be everyone's cup of tea. However, it seems like a great, affordable place to have a wedding, as long as your friends and family have updated their GPS's recently. I cannot stress how far away from civilization this place is.
Oh, yeah, and the lake itself is very clean and scenic. The boats and equipment are also on the rustic side, but it works. My husband and I took a nice little paddle out in one of the canoes before it got too hot in the morning.
So I was pleasantly surprised by our experience here and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick and easy weekend getaway. read more
