To start, the food is amazing! Each dish was incredible! Everything had so much flavor and was put together very well. Portion sizes are great for the price as well. The chicken was super tender and juicy with just the right amount of teriyaki sauce, in my opinion. Each sushi roll was put together very well with equal proportions. Not too much of one ingredient to overpower the rest. The dumplings were delicious and perfectly crispy on the outside. Not to mention the sauce that came with them was to die for! The service was great! Our waitress was very patient and helped us figure out what appetizers to get, since it was our first time in. She explained everything in detail and her recommendations were perfect! She even made our drinks (I forgot to get a picture of the strawberry lemonade) and they were awesome! Inside wasn't too loud or crowded and it's laid out quite nicely. There's even outdoor seating, which isn't neglected by the wait staff. Some places tend to "forget" about the customers outside but they didn't do that here. All of the staff were attentive and polite. Even with the bar being next to the table we were sitting at, it didn't feel crowded inside and the tvs weren't too loud.

Vibes: Cool, laid back but also giving upscale as well. Perfect for any occasion, can dress up or down. Service: Was good. We received a large bottle of water at our table, so the server didn't have to worry about making multiple trips to refill our glasses. Food: Was amazing! I love Asian food and it didn't disappoint. It may be my new favorite Asian restaurant in Iowa! I opted for the Pad Thai Beef, medium spice and the food was served hot, and the flavors were incredible. Everyone enjoyed their entrees. Pricing: A little pricey but worth it for the value. Location/Parking: Plenty of parking and easy to locate. So glad I had the opportunity to try when I was in the area, and I will be back soon.

Located about a mile south of Iowa State's athletic facilities, Wasabi is a quality Asian fusion experience that combines convenience, service, and a terrific menu. My favorite person and I were looking for an Ames restaurant to grab an early dinner and luckily chose Wasabi. We had never visited it previously. A private parking lot made it easy. Greeted warmly at the door by the staff. Comfortable seating, followed by kind service and an exciting menu, and I was already having a good night! Chloe, our server, was kind, knowledgeable, and professional, setting the tempo and vibe from the onset. She recommended our spicy garlic edamame appetizer, which was terrific (vegan, BTW) and lived up to its spicy name. The pork dumplings were so good. I should have ordered miso soup because, well, I LOVE miso soup. I wavered and decided to get sushi for some reason. No regrets because the salmon teriyaki was well-proportioned, served flawlessly, complimented by an excellent array of vegetables, and overall so tasty. We were never rushed, despite a busy night, and the overall vibe was comfy and intimate. A health score of 100/100 was comforting. The hotel was less than a mile from Highway 35 and 30, along with most local hotels. I'm returning on one of my many Ames visits and looking forward to that next visit.

We've been here a couple of times when visiting our daughter who attends Iowa State University. Located close to campus, this Wasabi location doesn't compromise authentic Japanese cuisine because it's in a college town. Food always taste great, marinating Japanese flavors into every dish! From appetizers to sushi to main dishes and to drinks, everything is well balanced and decently priced for a sushi restaurant. The restaurant space is elegant, dark wood furnishings, with a couple of tv's discreetly located in the corners of the restaurant so you can still keep an eye on the current college game going on. The greeters for the restaurant was welcoming and kind. Our servers though on our two most recent visits seemed unenthused to be there. Our order was correct, and they kept checking in on us to be sure we had everything we needed, but they just seemed unhappy and bothered. Servers in my opinion don't have to be over that top friendly, but they should make the dining experience at least pleasant. We'll be back again and hopefully the servers will be better.

Visited a great little spot in Ames, which stood out for its outstanding customer service and an impressive wine selection at great prices. The food was decent--nothing spectacular, but satisfying for a casual meal. Definitely worth checking out for a relaxed dining experience in town!

Best of all my twenty somethings and their "plus ones" can eat as much as they want, and I pay one low price. Yay! It's like Benihana but better: faster, cheaper and more casual. Was promptly seated and didn't have to wait long to get my order in or receive my food. Now I was in early so I could see how it could get busy as service picks up because seating can be a little limited. The restaurant was clean and decorated well enough. The location doesn't do it many favors but the food is good so I'll likely come back. I requested the New Delhi-Style Noodles because I enjoy yellow curry dishes and was needless to say I was impressed. The vermicelli noodles were great dipped into the accompanying fish sauce with curried chicken bites in between. The portion was solid for lunch and I didn't feel like I needed more to get me through until dinner. Only gripe is maybe the price is a little high for anything other than chicken but that's life right now. I'll likely stop back in to try a few more dishes when I'm back in the area.

Potstickers were just okay. The dipping sauce didn't do them any favors--this felt like an easy upgrade they're missing. Imperial Egg Rolls were the biggest letdown. At $17 for three, I expected something memorable...they just weren't. Pad Thai landed squarely in "average." Grilled Honey Roast Chicken Egg Noodles was a mixed bag. The chicken itself was delicious, but the noodles were pretty bland--and oddly, they didn't really work together. Royal Fried Rice was a win. The combo of BBQ pork, sweet sausage, and shrimp came together really well. Seafood Noodle dish was unfortunately pretty bland. All in all, a few bright spots, but not a place we're rushing back to--though I'd reorder those wings without hesitation.

Hawker Kitchen brings authentic Malaysian street food flavors right into the heart of Des Moines,…read moreand it's a spot that feels both comforting and exciting if you're craving Southeast Asian dishes. Char Kueh Teow This dish stood out immediately which has a smoky wok hei flavor (the "breath of the wok") coated the flat rice noodles, giving them that deep caramelized edge that's hard to find outside of Malaysia. The prawns were plump and juicy, and the mix of soy, garlic, and chili gave just the right balance of savory and spicy. Fresh cucumbers and pickled vegetables on the side added a refreshing crunch, making each bite balanced and addictive. Laksa Rich, creamy, and fragrant, the laksa broth was a highlight. The curry coconut base carried layers of spice without being overwhelming, and every sip warmed you from the inside out. The noodles were cooked just right, with toppings that tied it together from seafood to herbs. It's the kind of bowl that makes you pause between spoonfuls just to savor the aroma. Satay The chicken satay had a lovely turmeric and lemongrass marinade, grilled to a slight char that locked in the smoky flavor. Tender on the inside with crispy edges, it paired perfectly with the bold, nutty, and slightly spicy peanut dipping sauce. The cucumber slices on the side helped cut through the richness, just like you'd get back at a hawker stall in Malaysia. Overall Hawker Kitchen is a gem for anyone looking for authentic Malaysian comfort food in Des Moines. Portions are generous, flavors are bold and true to their roots, and the variety on the menu makes it worth repeat visits. If you're new to Malaysian cuisine, start with the satay and char kueh teow; if you're a fan already, the laksa will feel like home.
