Great sushi, very fresh. I was there with 3 coworkers, we ordered the large sushi platter than comes with 8 different rolls. There was plenty of food for dinner plus leftovers for lunch the following day. read more

Wanted to update review based on second experience. Food was excellent, service was improved but not great, but this might have been due to the fact that it was PACKED. Servers were slammed with outside dinning and pick ups. Goes to show how much Ames people were craving good sushi flavor. Looking forward to trying the dine-in experience starting July 21. read more

The food and atmosphere here are really nice. The one HUGE problem is with parking. It seems that possibly the employees are taking the spots that should be for customers. I've noticed even when it's not crowded in the restaurant, there's no parking available. read more

In town from CA for a Cyclones game & dined at Wasabi on a Friday night. I called as we pulled in to add our name to the wait list (thank you for doing this!) & our wait was less than the estimated 20-25 (more like 15). The service was a bit slow both at the bar and at the table. Our server apologized for the long wait as the kitchen was "backed up". Our food was fresh, tasty and we enjoyed our meal. Really like Wasabi and have had many wonderful nights of take out. We eat in person sometimes. But last night was horrible---really struck out. The food was cold. The usually excellent Bulgogi beef was made with practically raw onions and little sauce. The miso soup was packed so poorly it leaked all over the bag. Ugh must be a new cook. Had an extensive menu, and the server was quite knowledgeable about GF choices. Took a while for our food, but is was a Friday night and restaurant was filling up. Sushi was fresh, cooked entrees were hot, drink menu was fun and desserts were tasty. However the crème brûlée was served in a shallow dish. Food is great, price is high. Really, I could deal with that! But the service is pretty lousy. I've consistently had to wait extra time to pick up an order. The last time I went I waited almost a half hour past the expected pick up time and then I was given attitude by some red head manager in a blazer. I hadn't even bugged or even asked about my order! The manager is more worried about his phone than actually working to help his employees. When I asked him about the wait on an order he scoffed at me, then tried calling me his friend, and said that it would be ready when it is ready. Took a chance on a place I'd never knew existed until driving by. Made it even more adventurous by convincing my friend a true land animal eating Midwesterner fiercely disavowing rio Del Mar & all it contains & contributes. As soon as I hear those words "I ain't eating any raw fish"! It instantly becomes a challenge, maybe even a dare. All I can say is Ames scored w/ the addition of this establishment. We were probably the last guests of the night, which in itself can raise fears of retaliation from a tired ready to go home staff. The young gentleman who waited & served us was nothing but pleasant & accommodating. Then there's the food. I am a tried & true fan of sushi & bento eating it where ever I am. Used to think the closer to the actual sea the better the products it offers us. This somewhat nondescript place I barely noticed has me always wanting return visits. If that doesn't say much, my non pescado eating acquaintance has since become a huge seafood fanatic. With this person that speaks volumes. I can't wait to return! read more

I've arguably had the worst restaurant experience ever in my entire life at Wasabi Ames! Upon entering the restaurant, I was ushered to a 2-seat table that was located at front of the dining room all by itself. They must have placed the table there in anticipation of an overflow of the lunch crowd. Looking around the dining room, I saw that there were several tables that were open since it was getting close to 1 pm, closer to the end of of lunch rush. There were several wait staff congregating around the front desk. So, I asked if they could move me to another one of the open tables since I didn't feel comfortable sitting there all by myself. They refused and started making faces at each other as if they were saying, "What is this crazy guy's problem?" I asked for the manager and an older guy with unshaven face and glasses among the group of the wait staff claimed to be the manager. I told him that I frequent their restaurant and asked him if this is is how they treated their regular customers. He seemed indifferent. I then asked him if he doesn't see how his people are acting towards me. He said he doesn't see what I'm seeing. I see that he was trying to protect his people; however, he made a fool out of his customer in front of his people. I don't think he was a manager. If he was, that is not how you recover customer. I walked out and will never return to this place! read more

We dined outside at Wasabi last week to celebrate a birthday and we enjoyed everything! We're pretty new to Ames but we keep coming back to Wasabi either for take out or dine in because the food is so good! Their Brussel sprouts appetizer is AMAZING. We got the Rock n Roll this time which was so good, and two of their classic rolls. The mai tai and quarantini were both good too. We got a kids pasta dish for our kids and it was pretty tasty too. Our server (I think her name was Gloria) was super friendly and helpful and kind to our kids! Overall, food was great and service was great and we will definitely be back again! read more

Overall ok. Food was good. Went for lunch and waited about 25 mins for order and we were only ones in restaurant. Ordered wonton ramen noodle soup and pork fried rice. It was good food but way too much for lunch! Need a small and fast much menu. Also check out was completely on waitress pad and she stood while you entered the tip, which was uncomfortable.
