Had to hitchhike too a town Uber services were available
    Brendan O.

I called warriors heart to get help with PTSD I was in a dark spot and struggling severely dealing with things that happened when I was in the ARMY. When I spoke with intake personnel I told them what I was struggling with and they assured me this is the place we're I could find the help I needed. I told the intake personnel I did not have a substance abuse problem but I did use medical marijuana in place of six prescription drugs that was prescribed to help with anxiety depression and sleep. Once I got there, they gave me a back pack with work material regarding sobriety, and 12 step program. After being there for 10 days, I have only spoken to Behavior Health one time, the rest of the days we're classes on sobriety on the third day I had asked to leave but they assured me that this is the Place where I could get help and they convinced me to stay. I stayed another week and after only seen my counselor once and I requested to leave again. Once again, they tried to convince me to stay. I told him there's no way I could stay I'm not in the right mind to sit through classes on something I don't feel I have a problem with, and I clearly stated prior to coming I did not have a problem with substance abuse, I simply substituted prescription pills for medical marijuana. After it was finally said I was leaving I requested a ride back to the airport where they picked me up from and they refused. I had to walk up to the gas station and luckily someone I never met gave me a ride to the next biggest town so I can catch an Uber to the airport, now I've left their over two weeks ago and have not received my incidental refund that I had to put on my account prior to arriving at Warrior's heart. I feel I was tricked into coming there tricked into staying longer. Now I'm out over $1000 in airfare $300 in incidentals. Warriors Heart is a great place for veterans service members first responders, dealing with substance-abuse issues and trauma. However, it is not a place to seek treatment for PTSD or trauma related issues. Specifically, it is a rehab I'm still in shock that they would not give me a ride back to the airport and have not refunded my money, my next step is to call Tri Care and inform them of my experience because I never should've been accepted, because I did not have a substance abuse problem, which was clearly stated prior to going to Warriors Heart. Come to find out the amount of money they charge your insurance is ridiculous and it seems to be the motivation trying to get you to stay once you're there. You're told one thing on the phone and when you get there it's another.

There are no words that can truly describe how wonderful sobriety/recovery is, even after so many…read moreyears of living sober. When I arrived at La Hacienda in March more than 10 years ago, I was sick. Physically, mentally and spiritually. I knew I needed help, but I didn't believe that I would ever be able to remain sober for the rest of my life. If somehow I was able to remain sober, then I didn't see myself as being happy (I didn't understand what true happiness was. Happiness was mixed up in my mind with having a good time partying. I didn't have ANY idea of what Joy was or how it is different from happiness). I was wrapped up in how unfair it is for most people to be able to drink or try a drug and not be addicted to either and how unfair that was to those of us born with addictions. I wanted to be normal, too. Unfortunately, my normal was not working for me and that is where La Hacienda came in. My entire perspective on life was changed here and I began a work, still in progress, on myself. Like in most inpatient rehabs, I began with 3 days in their medical detox program. It is a very small and private area and the RN is there 24/7. You are visited by patients who are out of detox and in "Phase 2", if you are up to seeing anyone. They come by to say "Hi" and to see how you are and just to visit. I later found out it's one of the volunteer jobs that are signed up for weekly during meetings and it made me feel so much better, that I volunteered to do it for every week after I left detox. When you leave detox and enter the next phase (you advance through phases of treatment at the pace that you work your plan-around 28-35 days) you move into the regular rooms. The rooms are plain, but very clean. The housekeeping staff were terrific. The La Hacienda campus is just gorgeous. The outdoor maintenance men are always planting flowers or trimming bushes. They take pride in how beautiful the landscaping looks. When I left after 32 days, it was late April and there were flowers everywhere. (It was already warm enough in late April to swim in the pool and in the river). I know that a treatment center is not chosen for its beauty, but if it were, how could anyplace in the Texas Hill Country next to the Guadalupe River not win? It makes you feel so good to be surrounded by all of the beauty every day. I'm sure many things have changed over the years, but I remember the kitchen manager to be outstanding. I am a vegetarian and so many years ago, that was unusual. He took the time to find out what I liked to eat and ALWAYS had a hot freshly prepared entree at all 3 meals. They have a large salad bar in the dining room, as well. You will never go hungry here and you may gain some weight as they teach you about the triggers of HALT=Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired and there are always healthy snacks and fresh fruit available. It seemed to me that almost every staff member from the LCDC's, LSW's, RN's, etc...were in recovery and serious about it. There were NONE of the shenanigans I have heard about from friends about their rehab stays, eg...staff and patients hooking up, staff or patients selling drugs, and other crazy stuff. La Hacienda is a place for people who are ready to get well and to live sober. (Although there may be a patient or 2 who is not yet ready and is only there because of parents/family forcing them). Everyone who worked here seemed to love their job. I need to give credit to a person who made a great impact on my life. Chris R. His Big Book talks in the Bodega, where listening to him I not only began to understand what was wrong with me, but also how to fix it! How serendipitous it was that my 4th and final phone call from alumni services exactly one year after graduating from La Hacienda, was from Chris and exactly on that day. My own sponsor had chosen the day before to fall/jump off the wagon and I was actually beginning to talk myself into feeling sorry for myself. You aren't allowed to feel sorry for yourself with Chris (thank goodness) and he reminded me that I had an obligation to the person I sponsored and was responsible for and I would just need to find another sponsor for myself ASAP. I did just that the same night and she and I have been together ever since. Thank you

I have gone into social work myself since, and had a lot of education on trauma care, and I can tell you this place isn't that. Not that I think you need an advanced degree to know. I've waited quite a while to write this review to make sure I wasn't just harboring something. I did have positive experiences with some people there, mostly a couple of techs that I still regard very highly and the opportunity to connect with other women was great. The clinical work here... so so bad, though. Basically, I watched every client with severe trauma symptoms here be re-traumatized pretty heavily. I was shamed in group settings in ways that I could tell perpetuated harm not just for me, but for other clients with similar experiences. I know a lot of clients I was with relapsed very soon after. I definitely put some of that down to the added shame that was piled on in this environment at a clinical level--woof. (To be fair, from what I have heard seems to be pretty much everywhere in substance treatment in Texas). As a survivor of narcissistic abuse several times over, which was all part of the trauma stories they have you share, I was then repeatedly accused of being a narcissist in group session by a particular therapist. My thinking is that most of this was because I did not act super compliant about the problematic stuff here--and meanwhile had a lot of very positive relationships with other clients. For myself, I was outright told my PTSD wasn't PTSD by my direct therapist. This has been my central diagnosis every other place I have had care. My genuine belief is that because they were so ill-equipped to address it, misdiagnosing me with god knows what was an attempt sidestep their incompetence amongst themselves. I haven't been back to treatment, I will give them that. But I put that down more to my insistence on following my own path that I knew honored my experience and sheer will to never have to be in a state where I could be treated this way again.
