Love this place but sadly the mostly broke town can't afford to maintain it and its only open 3 days a week.

Elizabeth Taber Library - Not a large library

    Elizabeth Taber Library

Staff seemed very snobby and ignorant of common neurological and developmental disabilities. A place that should be an example of knowledge and worldliness showed that people with disabilities should be excluded and judged. Anyone could develop a neurological condition or have a child with a disability. The judgmental staff should keep that in mind and stop their judgemental attitudes and comments.

A present from a…read more fairy godmother The Elizabeth Taber Library was a gift from a woman that became known as the Fairy Godmother of the town of Marion. She was a very wealthy widow with no children that decided her money should go to the enrichment of her hometown. She not only had the library built in 1872 but also was instrumental in the building of the town hall, music hall and the Tabor Academy. The academy is curious because if you look closely you will notice that it is spelled Tabor and not Taber because Elizabeth wanted it named after Mount Tabor from the bible and not her own name. The library that was built is a lovely Victorian building that also has a small natural history museum upstairs which is of course another gift from the fairy godmother. The library is old and relativity small but does have a few computers, wi-fi and other modern amenities. The library was expanded in the year two thousand to include a pleasant children's area but the real treasure of this library is the wonderful librarian working there. On the libraries web site they claim that they will try to answer any question that you might have and they really mean it. The librarian we met was incredible knowledgeable about the town and history and really went out of her way to answer our stupid questions and make us feel welcome and at home. Certainly not a large amount of books or other materials compared to newer libraries but having such a great librarian more than makes us for that. This is a library that Elizabeth would be proud of.

Mattapoisett Public Library - Peaceful spot

Cannon clocks and…read morecases Mattapoisett means place of rest in the local Native American language and this library is indeed a peaceful and extremely interesting place. Nestled on a quiet side street close enough to the ocean that you can smell it, the library has a unique charm. As you approach the library you notice all the cool stuff outside. A huge old naval cannon sits guarding the lawn, a huge boulder with a plaque on it and a cool civil war statue all demand your attention. They now are displaying an octopus made out of trash picked up from the area. Even if you didn't go into the building this would still be a interesting place. Once you do go inside you quickly realize this is not your average small town library. Cool old grandfather clocks, beautiful artwork, cases filled with cool stuff and a magnificent staircase all conspire to catch your eye. The library was renovated in 2008 with 4,000 square feet added and the architects did a marvelous job. Everything blends together very well and the new area is congruent with the original. Not the cheap, hack jobs that you frequently see on some renovated libraries, this was well thought out. The librarians there were very friendly, knowledgeable, hospitable and just plain nice. Gave me all the information about the library that I could every desire and let us explore as much as we wanted. Of course the facility has all the usual modern items that most libraries have and lots of cozy places to read but we didn't even bother to look at them, we were having too much fun with everything else. Mattatpoisett Public Library makes you realize that a library can be a lot more than just a place to read.

The children's portion of the library is fantastic, with lots of fun projects kids can work on, from arts and crafts, puzzles, a science corner, and a large lego play table with legos. My kids love to spend time here as do I!

Grilled Reuben. Chicken or meatball parmesan. Cubano. Bánh mì. Shrimp po boy. Philly cheesesteak. Lobster roll. I would include a donner kebab (we call them gyros in the USA). Those belong on display! But none of those were here at the Sandwich Public Library. Instead, I spent two hours here working this morning. I found a comfy spot with power outlets and a corner where I could work and take a quiet Zoom meeting as the fog burned off and my morning of remote work progressed. A few changes and additions have been added over the years but the basic library is still doing what the Westons envisioned. The library is located in the center of town and frequently has arts and craft shows and other events on the grounds. In the spring the lawn is blooming with flowers and trees and is a beautiful place to stop and admire. The original building is rather square and stout and looks like it will last for another thousand years. Unfortunately the additions look like after thoughts and although useful don't really blend with the original structure. The inside of the library has all the usual modern library conveniences and is definitely a useful place for some reading or research. Lots of local history and genealogy is available combined with some very knowledgeable people. There are also lots of cozy places to sit and interesting things to look at. In June the Library had an event that celebrated the dedication ceremony that was held back in June 17, 1911. It seems likely that the library will be having another celebration one hundred years from now.

So therefore she couldn't walk 10 feet away to a computer terminal to assist me even though the sign says' if you need any help, ask someone..' But she left the desk running around the whole downstairs at the library, neglecting the front counter, she had sent she couldn't leave and otherwise being difficult to deal with. She had a bad attitude, not courteous and seemed overwhelmed by her duties! I will avoid this 'Tax payer funded' seemingly so overwhelmed at all costs.

It's aesthetically appealing from both the outside and in, with lots of natural light, plenty of open spaces to spread out and cozy nooks and corners to relax in. It's a library where you can breathe even when a lot of other people are around. Even though it is large and sprawling, it's so well and logical organized that everything is easy to find. Just a pleasure to walk around and look at how well the architects and designers did their jobs. The views from the upstairs is wonderful and even the most claustrophobic individual will feel comfortable inside. One of the coolest parts of the library is the Carver Room. Dedicated to genealogy and local history it has antiques, old maps and oodles of cool stuff to look at. A place to spend some time even if you don't care about the area. Several very nice libraries quilts give homage to tradition and history but rows of computers and wifi shows the way to the future. A library that is looking straight ahead but will never forget what came before it.
