    Falmouth Public Library

History and…read moreconvenience The very first idea for a library in the town of Falmouth was back in 1792. At first the books were stored where ever there was room and eventually ended up in the town hall. The library finally got a permanent home in 1901. As the town grew the need for a larger library also become obvious. So in 1966 an addition was completed. And again in 1978 another addition was added. And finally in 2008 major renovations took place and now the library is a whole lot larger than the original one but still has the charm of the very first building. The library is beautiful, both inside and out and the additions and renovations blend in extremely well with the original concept so it can be difficult to see exactly where the addtions were added. The seal of the town of Falmouth is even embedded on a dome in the ceiling. The library has lots of very comfy place to sit or study as well as a great local history room, kids department and community room. A lovely and very useful library that has grown along with the town.

We went to this library a lot when our kids were little. They loved it and we loved it. We had not…read morebeen back for a while but wanted to see how it had fared in recent years. It's a small town library that's really crowded during summer tourist season and never used to be crowded at all in the off season when we were often in town. It was jam packed on a cool drizzly summer day. It still has a large lower level children's section. And it is still the place to be with wonderful creative updates. The book areas are nicely delineated by age groups and book styles and there are lots of inspiring posters even on office and closet doors. A creative playhouse is at one end. A local garden having a butterfly release on Saturday was nicely featured with all the details of the event and displayed many correlated books. The librarians were very helpful and parents circulated through the areas with their kids. There did seem to be lots of locals socializing with each other but also some obvious tourists enjoying the facility. The building still has lots of historic charm but there are updates to some areas as well as the exterior. There appeared to be an addition since we were last here and we heard maybe yet another in the near future. Parking was a real problem this week but I would guess they can handle the off season/school year just fine.

Grilled Reuben. Chicken or meatball parmesan. Cubano. Bánh mì. Shrimp po boy. Philly cheesesteak. Lobster roll. I would include a donner kebab (we call them gyros in the USA). Those belong on display! But none of those were here at the Sandwich Public Library. Instead, I spent two hours here working this morning. I found a comfy spot with power outlets and a corner where I could work and take a quiet Zoom meeting as the fog burned off and my morning of remote work progressed. The next hundred…read moreyears Back in 1909 Sophia and William Weston decided their small Cape Cod town needed a library so they generously donated enough money to have the land purchased and structure built. A few changes and additions have been added over the years but the basic library is still doing what the Westons envisioned. The library is located in the center of town and frequently has arts and craft shows and other events on the grounds. In the spring the lawn is blooming with flowers and trees and is a beautiful place to stop and admire. The original building is rather square and stout and looks like it will last for another thousand years. Unfortunately the additions look like after thoughts and although useful don't really blend with the original structure. The inside of the library has all the usual modern library conveniences and is definitely a useful place for some reading or research. Lots of local history and genealogy is available combined with some very knowledgeable people. There are also lots of cozy places to sit and interesting things to look at. In June the Library had an event that celebrated the dedication ceremony that was held back in June 17, 1911. It seems likely that the library will be having another celebration one hundred years from now.

Elizabeth Taber Library - Not a large library

Staff seemed very snobby and ignorant of common neurological and developmental disabilities. A place that should be an example of knowledge and worldliness showed that people with disabilities should be excluded and judged. Anyone could develop a neurological condition or have a child with a disability. The judgmental staff should keep that in mind and stop their judgemental attitudes and comments.

A present from a…read more fairy godmother The Elizabeth Taber Library was a gift from a woman that became known as the Fairy Godmother of the town of Marion. She was a very wealthy widow with no children that decided her money should go to the enrichment of her hometown. She not only had the library built in 1872 but also was instrumental in the building of the town hall, music hall and the Tabor Academy. The academy is curious because if you look closely you will notice that it is spelled Tabor and not Taber because Elizabeth wanted it named after Mount Tabor from the bible and not her own name. The library that was built is a lovely Victorian building that also has a small natural history museum upstairs which is of course another gift from the fairy godmother. The library is old and relativity small but does have a few computers, wi-fi and other modern amenities. The library was expanded in the year two thousand to include a pleasant children's area but the real treasure of this library is the wonderful librarian working there. On the libraries web site they claim that they will try to answer any question that you might have and they really mean it. The librarian we met was incredible knowledgeable about the town and history and really went out of her way to answer our stupid questions and make us feel welcome and at home. Certainly not a large amount of books or other materials compared to newer libraries but having such a great librarian more than makes us for that. This is a library that Elizabeth would be proud of.

The room was set up with a lot of space for people to sit comfortably. I got to ask my question and Bob Mackie even wished me a happy birthday. I don't know how the library got ahold of Bob Mackie and convinced him to come do a book signing, but this was a great event. I'm only in town over the summer but I'm now interested in seeing what other events and opportunities the library has to offer. I might also want to take a look at their book collection and see what they've got and how you can even check one out. I love a good public library and hope to support them and what they do for the community.
