We adopted a kitten and a cat this past April. Initially, a mix-up existed as the paperwork of the…read moretwo tuxedo kittens/cats was incorrect. Fortunately, they scanned the microchips and corrected the error. We are repeat adopters, with a history of four cats adopted over the years. :-) The normal procedure (according to the adoption paperwork and online) is to fully register the microchips at www.petlink.com and I can then add a photograph to the listing and take advantage of the "extras" should anything happen with our cats. I checked the registrations so I could add the photographs. I was surprised to learn that their microchips were not in the system and I immediately registered both, but at the basic level. I telephoned Noah's Ark and spoke to Madison on the first Saturday of June to ask if they could upgrade the listings (as was done with the other four cats). She stated she would look into it and telephone on the upcoming Tuesday. Nothing. I emailed Brook describing what had happened but received no response. The email did not bounce so I believe she received it. Lastly, I telephoned Noah's Ark the first week of July and asked to speak with Stephanie, the manager. She was not in, but Marsha (the office manager) told me to telephone today (July 15) and ask for Brooke. Why? I have been ghosted more than once and we adopted multiple cats (all have worked out well). The correct (and professional) way to handle my call was to take a message or advise as to best date and time to call back to ensure reaching Stephanie. We also donated a great amount of dog supplies, food, and cat food. It would not have taken much to upgrade the microchip registrations to the Premium Lifetime Level. I am retired and only want what was promised in the contract.

I can't believe I hadn't reviewed Adopt previously. My dear sweet Calliecakes is from this shelter,…read moreso I am forever grateful that they rescued her. My parents saw her at the shelter back in 2012 and texted me her photo (because they knew I wanted a cat), and I was like "yes absolutely I want her I will come get her." And the rest is history -- it's been 11 great years with my bestie (and hopefully many more). And then a year later, almost to the day, my parents were like "hey let's go to Adopt" the day after Thanksgiving and they ended up getting a cat (their second) for themselves. I haven't been back to the shelter since 2013 when I went with them when they decided to get their cat, but at that time the shelter was super nice and they had several rooms where cats could roam free. It was a nice, no-stress situation to be able to sit on a sofa or on the floor and have the cats come check you out. So many snuggles. And I follow them on Instagram and they continue to do great work and care deeply for the animals they rescue. Definitely check them out if you are looking for a new best friend! And now enjoy the cat photo spam/cat tax :)

Greater Chicago Cavalier Rescue - Ryno, the wonder Cavalier!

WOW! I finally hit 500!…read more I wanted to make this review special--something that's close to my heart (just like my other 100 markers!). For those of you who know me, know that I love my pooch Ryno. He's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and yes, is treated like royalty. I have yet to meet a Cavalier that hasn't been sweet, awesome, and overall just a great catch! I have not adopted from this rescue, but know people who have, I've also met a few people affiliated with the rescue at various meet ups and dog shows throughout IL and even WI. :-) You couldn't ask for a bunch of better people! Here's a little about their mission (taken from their website): GCCR's mission is to help ensure the health and security of abused, abandoned, and otherwise endangered Cavalier King Charles Spaniels by rehabilitating and placing Cavaliers from shelters and similar situations, by assisting breeders and owners in finding new homes for their Cavaliers, and by providing to the public educational materials and consultation regarding Cavalier health and care. The growing popularity of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels has prompted increased breeding by unscrupulous breeders and puppy mills. This development suggests that owners' concerns about health as well as the number of Cavaliers in need will only grow. Placement of Cavaliers in new homes without appropriate, knowledgeable veterinary testing may result in unforeseen, serious heartaches for new owners. The GCCR as well as other dedicated Cavalier rescuers and owners are here to help.

We adopted a dane/lab mix from Almost Home last year. I really appreciated the foster-to-adopt…read moresystem they have to give you a clearer idea of what the specific animal is all about. I've had dogs my whole life and when I filled out their paperwork I was of the opinion the only reason I might return a dog would be aggression or if my personal financial situation changed dramatically. The fostering system gave me a much better idea of what I was committing to in this case. My wife, kiddo, and I all came to meet the dog we thought we wanted and after that went well we took her home. It became immediately clear that this girl had not been indoors or socialized very much, if ever. I was very surprised to have essentially a 70lb puppy on my hands. This was more work than I expected, and it was more work than my family expected, but knowing we had time to work with her as a foster in our home environment provided a lot of confidence in seeing how it went. Almost Home was in regular contact to check in with us and provided us with enrichment toys, advice, and resources for taking her to training classes. There was never pressure to keep her, and it was always clear everybody was only interested in what was best for the animal. After a few weeks she was improving, but still more work than I expected, and Almost Home was happy to let us continue to foster until everybody was sure this would be a good fit. Our girl kept improving and we committed to the adoption. Eventually we were able to return our home to normal, and do so free of concerns things would be destroyed. The time and space that was provided to be sure this would all work out resulted in one of the best bonds I've ever had with a dog. We're inseparable these days, and we owe it to the support Almost Home and their volunteers offered throughout the process.

I have an extra large yard with a beautiful 6-ft privacy fence. Immediately, the administrator told me I was lying and I didn't have a fence. She was looking at old mapping that was on the internet. When I bought my house. I put the fence up immediately for my dogs. I ended up sending her the invoice voice from when I purchased and installed the fence. Then she came up with another untruth saying that I was bad-mouthing the shelty rescue on Facebook. What had happened was she got this little dog in and she told me I was approved for the adoption and I was ready to pick her up when then she decided to spring it on me that the dog was heartworm positive. I had never had a heartworm positive dog so I asked my Facebook friends, many of them who were Sheltie owners, what I needed to know about taking in a heartworm positive dog. The administrator had a fit and said that I was bad mouthing her which I never did. She pulled the plug on my adoption for no reason whatsoever after I had made plans to receive this pup the next day. It was very sad because the little dog needed a good home and I provide such an excellent home for my shelties. And will never deal with Central Illinois Sheltie Rescue again... Unless they have a different administrator. So sad when she had no reason to do any of this.
