Our family can never thank him for the peace he has given us. My brother Glenn recently passed away in Texas. He he did not have a wife or family who could take care of his burial in Texas. I contacted Schmitt's funeral and spoke to Curt and he recommended a funeral director in El Paso TX who I was able to get my brother from the hospital morgue to a facility where he could be properly cremated and then after some veterans paperwork... We were able to have his remains shipped to New York to the Charles G Schmitt funeral home. Curt was wonderful with his staff making arrangements for my brother who is an army veteran. The thing is I haven't been in contact with my brother for over 40 years so I didn't have a lot of information and what little information I was able to provide they were able to get my brother approved to be laid to rest at the Long Island National veterans cemetery in Farmingdale. The staff at the Long Island National veterans cemetery was amazing, I was thankful for the honor guard as well as the clergy that was provided. There is no words for the value and appreciation one gets from a military service. Whether you choose to have your loved one buried in a traditional grave site or placed in an urn and put in a niche... Solemnly walked up the steps and was greeted by a host. I gave the last name and he instructed me where to go. Looks like they have a few decently sized rooms. Signed the welcome book and entered the room straight to the back. As you can imagine there was a coffin in the back of the room, rows of chairs, a couple couches, those bronze hand things to hold Mass cards... Flowers etc. Looked like a nice place, comfortable and solemn feeling. I said my condolences and got out of dodge because dead bodies in a room seem weird to me. When I left the host said something pleasant, but I said, "have a nice day" and bee lined. If this is your last stop, and your family wants to traditionally display you while they hover around... I'd consider this place. Grief isn't a laughing matter, and these people seem Professional and well versed in how to handle these situations, unlike myself.

I have never been to a service without clergy present. The family was in shock over the passing of their church-going, fiercely faithful matriarch. We were so surprised the clergy was absent. From what we observed, it wasn't a full house at the funeral home so why was your coordinator filling in for the clergy? Shouldn't you, as the orchestrator of this funeral service, ensure there is proper closure for a loyal parishioner and long-time member of the community? The fill-in failed at offering the family those words of comfort they needed to hear today. Furthermore, my child had to correct her on the pronunciation of the deceased name. Attention to details matter. But most important, a proper sendoff of the deceased is expected. I tried to send an email to you directly because I think the family deserves an apology. But I couldn't find one. So no. Not all of this service met the expectations as you described. And when your name is on the building, it is your responsibility to attend to every detail with precision, professionalism and excellence. That final part leaves the wrong impression for a grieving family gathered together for comfort, compassion and closure.

Chris is likely to have attended to thousands of funerals, but there was no sense that this was 'same-old, same-old' with him. He was so in tune with where the family was emotionally, and was able to adjust accordingly. He was such a calming, helpful presence throughout. He has the wisdom of knowing that people's faculties are compromised at a time like this and guided us gently through each part of the process at just the right time, never invasive, checking in on what might be needed and offering just the right amount of guidance and preparation. Likewise, every inch of the funeral home and their chapels have been designed to make you feel the warmth, serenity and dignity you would wish for at such a time: The decor is elegant but homey; the background music is peaceful and settling; the fish pond and fountain in the reception area adds a natural, calming element, and of course, there's Jake. Jake (Chris's shadow) is a young, highly trained labradoodle who is the resident support dog, gently walking around, offering himself to anyone he senses may need him. He is a special soul and he loves his work. I don't think the process could have gone more smoothly. The chapel was beautifully set up and my mother-in-law looked so naturally elegant and peaceful at her wake in the chapel. They did an incredible job. They created a beautiful digital slideshow from all our photos and set up our photo boards and flowers magnificently. After the service, they packed up everything from the chapel and stored it for us carefully until we could collect it at our convenience. Nothing seemed too much for them as long as they could help make this process as easy and meaningful as possible for us. One final aspect worth mentioning: The funeral home allowed us to arrange a lot upfront, before my mother-in-law passed, which similar business services do not always allow. Once someone has passed, emotions are so high that it's really hard to concentrate on small details, which is required to plan accordingly. Being able to plan this all upfront was incredibly helpful.
