Lower Whoops Mountain Bike Trail

Lower Whoops Mountain Bike Trail

This is hands down my favorite mountain bike trail in Bend. This is a downhill only trail that is…read morelocated beyond the Phils trail complex further up Skyliner road. You can reach it by taking trails up from Phil's trailhead, but it's quite an uphill climb. The skill level for the Whoops trail is intermediate to advanced. I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner unless you want to fall off your bike. This trail has a ton of jumps and tables. I rarely hit the jumps myself, but you can just ride over them and still have a blast. Many of these tables and jumps have some baking turns right after them, so be on your A game when riding over them. This trail is higher elevation than the other trails so it takes a bit longer to thaw out. Since it is one of the most popular trails it is typically one of the first to get rutted out. There are a few drops a rock to run over on the trail, so be aware of that as well. One of my favorite features of this trail is the options that you have when riding it. What is great is that you can park at the bottom and ride up the forest road up to it if you are short on time. If it takes you longer than you guessed you can leave, or if you have time you can go again. This make is perfect for local who want to get in an evening ride after work. Many of the other trials are much longer, making it difficult to get a ride in if you work late, but the whoops is fun and quick. If you have all day, I like to park at Phil's Trailhead, ride up Bens, to the top of Whoops, and down whoops and down Phill's canyon trail. This is one fo the best Mt bike trail combos in town! This was totally my mistake. I had set my mind up to not bike that day once I realized the error However Lara was so gracious and kind about my mistake. She immediately walked me over to the office and started trying to figure out what else we could do. She really want the extra mile and ended up coordinating bikes from the hotel, recommending a route since now we wouldn't have a guide, and offering to drive us up if we weren't able to catch the shuttle. There's no place I will rent a bike in Bend besides here thank you Cog Wild.

CW gave us an extra shuttle the first day we had shuttles booked for no extra charge to make up for the inconvenience of the snow affecting our scheduled shuttles. Great hospitality and very accommodating.

This was an ok trip but I had mixed feelings about it…read more Pros: The guide was nice (we had Lane), which made the ride more enjoyable. He knew all of our names before we even left the parking lot. The trail was in good shape from recent rain so a beginner would have no trouble participating. Cons: The email confirmation and website mentioned the bike shortage and that riders had to be a minimum of 4 ft tall with a 24 inch inseam but didn't really explain how to measure that, etc. Sure, I know what an inseam in pants is, but turns out an inseam measurement for bike riding is different. Would have been nice to know without having to look it up the night before and then worry my kid wouldn't be tall enough. Lots of standing around. We were on the 10-4 tour and though we arrived at 9:45 no one directed us to have our kids take the bike test to see if they could go and nobody got fitted for bikes until everyone in the booking had arrived. Then, the large 10 am group was split into two smaller groups and if you were in the second group, you had to stand around for 20 minutes killing time to give the first group a head start. Why not just stagger the starts and have a 10 am and a 10:30? From a customer perspective this sort of sucked. This was billed as a Mountain bike ride with waterfalls and slides, but it was more like, walking/hiking to see 3 waterfalls and then a very mellow 3 mile single track ride to finish. It would have been nice to sort people by skill or interest (shorter vs longer rides) as we definitely had some gung ho dudes in our group and some newbies like me. Two of the waterfalls (at least) were accessible via McKay campground, which was a little disappointing. I thought we would be off the beaten path, checking out a little known spot, etc. Overall, our young kids, 8 and 10 enjoyed it and had fun. It was their first time mountain biking. I'd rate the ride and scenery 4 stars but the administration and organization only 2 stars (I'm a fan of efficiency and customer service) , hence my 3 star rating.

From there the group will vote and you must conform to the group decision. We were the only ones who showed up. The owner, Todd, decided after getting various voice messages the day before and the morning of, but he would cancel the event. Great! No pick up the phone and call your customers to make sure they don't waste their time and come all the way out to the top of a mountain only to find your experience was canceled. He claimed to have sent a text in the early morning hours. But I didn't get it until after the fact. Oh well, not great but not terrible. Did waste a lot of our time driving out there on a horrific weather day for smoke. Talked to Todd personally later, and he said "no problem I'll give your money back." Refund it all of it except our deposit, then wouldn't answer the phone or return multiple calls. In my final message I reminded him of his neglect as a business owner and a conscientious honest human. Told him repeatedly he needed to refund my deposit, as there were no terms or discussion of anything other than a full refund. Really annoying to deal with business owners who aren't conscientious. Really detracts from your credibility. So here's the review I promise to leave you if you went another two weeks without returning my calls again. Gave you four chances Todd.

From here you will have a downhill only section of trail to bomb down. This trial starts out off of Conklin Road and as far as I know there is no way to shuttle this. The uphill is pretty gnarly, but at least from my experience pretty steady. So you may want to bring a snack or two for energy. The trail follows a forest service road up to the top of a beautiful butte that is uphill only and separate from the downhill section of the trail. So you will not have to stop much for anyone passing you. When you get close to the top you will stat to notice the elevation increase and be able to witness some breathtaking views that are unique from this perspective of central Oregon. Once you get to the top, I would recommend taking a breather and getting some photos of the views. It's a good time to chill and have a snack. From here you will be ready to mob downhill. This is where things get super fun. There are a few rocky sections to watch out for, but for the most part this trial is pretty smooth and fast! As this trail is ways from any hospital you will want to use good judgment, but still, have fun. Be sure to stay on the designated uphill or downhill section that you are supposed to be on and you will have a five-star experience! It is pretty long, so if you want to ride up and back, you should have a good portion of your day free. I highly recommend shuttling this trial. The trail starts off pretty rocky. The elevation will drop and gain consistently and you might think that your ride is going to be pretty lame. But eventually, you will find yourself in a beautifully dense conifer forest. At this point, you will have a good elevation gain to continue on. Once you hit a crossroads you will start to notice that there is not much elevation gain left. That's when things get pretty epic. Once you start your decent, you will be faced with some pretty epic berms and jumps. you will know this because it's quite visible. If you are not an intermediate rider, you may want to take caution. I have flown out of control a time or two here myself. But it's the most exciting feeling you could ever wish for. The berms and jumps last for maybe a quarter mile or so. If you had a blast you could peddle up the little trial to the side and do it again. After that Tiddlywinks mellows out and you have some smooth fast riding left. About a couple miles I would say. Then you will see another jumpy/bermy section left to ride. After that, you will ride through some more gorgeous sections of the trail until you reach the Storm King trail intersection. At this point, your journey will be close to over. To shuttle this trail it is only a couple hours long, but to travel up and back, it took me about half a day. One thing to keep in mind is that this trial is pretty high in elevation. So it can take a while for the snow to clear to ride it. The other factor is it is quick to get sandy and rutted out. So if it's too late or early in the season your SOL. WARNING: The gnarly sections are downhill only. If you don't like getting collided into, be sure to find the signs that say "Downhill Only" and keep off that section of trail. The drive to the trailhead took 2.5 hours from my home in Portland, so we left by 6. If you arrive after 9 or 10 you have to deal with the crowds. Sahalie Falls was first and can be accessed very easily from the parking lot - no hike required. Keep this one in mind if you have mobility limitations. If you're up for it, hit the trail here. A short distance along the Mckenzie Creek will take you to Koosah Falls. Gorgeous, with falling turquoise water. Want a scare? Look up the fools who cliff jump from here. Incredible. After that you pass by the reservoir, then have a nice hike along a soft pine needle path down to Tomalitch Blue Pool. Again with the cliff jumping. Don't do it! So dangerous. But do carefully follow the pink ribbons over the rock ledge and down to the shore. You can swim if you dare in the 38 degree water. At least dunk your feet. The hike back to where you parked at Sahalie is 5 miles. Pack a lunch, a lot of water (I finished my 3 liters), and enjoy the day.
